Comp Sci Noob

Wanting to get into Comp Sci. As far as careers go are there many jobs that have sort of their own in house Geek Squad tech that sets up PCs, handles all computer related problems, etc? Is this basically a Network Admin or Systems Admin? Anyway was wondering if the market was good for that right now and also what courses you recommend taking for that area?

The other option I'm looking into is s/w development. I think, knowing me, I'd rather be a Network Admin simply because I like helping people out when something has gone wrong. But I have bills to pay and tbh the biggest factor in making my decision is the money and the market. I could be happy in either position so may as well take the one in most demand.

Any input would be tremendously appreciated.

Have a great weekend!

Re: Comp Sci Noob

How old are you? What is your current job? What level of education would you like to achieve?

The market will obviously depend on where you live but I will explain from my experience. (MSc CompSci student, graduating in September.)

There are companies that specifically look after other companies IT solutions. Not to mention companies that maintain data centres.

System admins and Network admins will be different depending on the size of the company that you choose to work for. You also may be thinking about IT Technicians.

I haven't specifically looked into the market for these positions as I am looking towards a more development position when I graduate in a few months.

As far as development, there seems to be a good market of employment. Web design, while it is not something that I have any experience in, seems to have TONs of jobs available at a good wage when I have looked. Database work also seems to be highly paid and advertised, especially as I have always thought that databases are fairly easy to grasp.

As I said I have always found development a much more interesting topic than maintaining systems, I also feel that with companies specializing in bespoke solution and consultancy work that the positions which would allow me to "enjoy" my job as well as communicate and help people who have a lower knowledge base increases its appeal even more.

I hope I have been of some help.
