Hello, I am a proponent of the Open Source movement, and I am wondering if there is interest in creating an Open Source Poker Room in C/C++. Thoughts? What do you think the interest level is in such an undertaking?

What's the end goal here?

Short answer: to proliferate ideas.

I am thinking poker research, something for bots to plug into, and get results out of. There are numerous people with programming talent, and I am of the mind that two heads are better than one.

If you have ever seen the movie, "Those magnificent men and their flying machines."

The trouble with aviation today
is that too many good ideas.. .
are being dissipated
in too many aeroplanes.
If we could bring together all these
different types from all over the world,
then everyone could learn
from each other.
From all over the world?
If possible, Lord Rawnsley. The French
and the Americans are well ahead of us.
- I never knew that.
- Well, it's our own fault.
Believe it or not, no Englishman
flew until three years ago.
Really?
Britannia may rule
the waves, sir,
but she doesn't rule the
skies, not yet anyway.
Have some more Madeira.
Oh, you haven't finished.
Damn it.
We should rule the sky.
I can see you're going to be
a real enthusiast, sir.
Anytime you should
care to come up-
No, thank you, Mays.
I may be an old fogy,
but I think that if the Lord
had intended me to fly,
he would have
given me... wings.
You travel by train, Father,
but you haven't any wheels.
Do you really mean no Englishman
flew until three years ago?
That's right, sir.
Hmm.
Come and see me again
in a few days.
Meanwhile, I'll discuss your idea
with my circulation people.
Oh, thank you, sir.
Thank you very much.
I believe it will proliferate ideas about modern coding techniques, the mathematics of poker, and the mechanics of online poker.

Also, I believe a better understanding of GTO will lead to exciting new discoveries such as improved collusion-detection bots, which might restore some integrity to online poker.

I am fully willing to host the website for this project. I need to generate interest.

The problem for you is that those who wish to apply this talent to poker, are writing programs that allow them to earn a living by selling them to real money players or by using them themselves at real money tables. Few are interested in purely academic or open-source research in the field where there's still immense cash to be made by private or commercial applied programming.

Isn't there already a bot poker tournament?

If the goal is to further game theory in poker, or allow bots to play poker - creating an open source poker room seems like a very non direct approach to doing that.

Yes I think you make excellent points. I will address them. It is my view that people do not want to play with bots, or even pros for that matter, and bots can detect bots if that's of interest.

Detecting bots is basically impossible with a motivated enough author, and when money is involved they will be motivated enough. This is basically why imo gambling games of skill have a limited lifespan online.

Poker will continue to reinvent itself though.

I think detecting poker bots is possible if you are on the cutting edge of mathematics. To play mathematically correct is to play well. So basically if you play so well you are mathematically perfect, you play like a robot or are a robot.

I do not construct bots, nor do I have any particular hatred of bots. I do think the game would be more fun if bots simply declared themselves as bots.

What has sparked this is realizing how far mathematics has come in the field of poker. Live hold'em is going to be a mostly solveable game, which makes it worth my time to spend an extremely extended period of time looking into it. But what is missing is some infrastructure, and I think some open source infrastructure will add to the poker community as it begins to change colors and start the mating process all over again.

I think what I will do is begin this infrastructure on my own, put it open source, and then see if anyone else is interested. I have no idea what poker will look like 20+ years from now, but with open source community projects it is my firm belief that it will look better.

Okay, I will not pursue this due to lack of interest. Thank you for replies.
