buy new computer advice

hi for the last few years i have used this computer, the thinkpad t42, http://www.amazon.com/IBM-T40-Thinkp...words=thinkpad

i bought it refurbished it has lasted a long time and only cost me $200 and it simple and has worked great i liked it a lot, unfortunately it appears to be breaking now. so i will buy a new computer. cost is the main priority, durability. beyond that i will just be using the web and doing some programming with python and sqlite etc...

should i be moving to linux now as a programmer? my friend said i needed a mac but i hate macs. thanks for advice!

If you're going to be using Linux in your career you might as well use it as your main OS. The only reason to use windows is if you need Office, etc for work. Only reason to use a Mac is if you want a pretty computer or want to make an iphone app.

Re: buy new computer advice

i kind of dislike macs on principle as i live in boston ma and i dont like hipsters in coffee stores that bring macs with them. and i never use office. so am i on linux road? but at the same time i program for fun this is not a career, just trying to make a little money sports betting...

durability is important to me and price...

[[i go to starbucks now. this place is not trendy anymore imo it is the corporate monsters]]

Durability and low price tend to go opposite directions, unluckyboy.

A Macbook Air or Pro is going to be one of the more durable ones you see, but yeah, it'll cost you, chief.

I don't use macs but I think that hippies at starbucks is a pretty stupid reason to not use them. Use whatever you'll enjoy and be most productive with, OS doesn't really matter that much.

Re: buy new computer advice

Do your own research. Not to be mean, but laptop tech changes so often that the only people who know about current specific laptops are people who write about them for a living and people who are buying a laptop and have done their research.

I don't understand why you need a new computer for this task? You're going to be network bound.
