Super low content, quote from a Christopher Hitchens inerview

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPn4G...eature=related

At 52:33, please clarify what sounds like "as Aspire Agnew is supposed to of said, America is the greatest nation in the country"

I'm not able to figure out what he was talking about there.

Thanks.

"or as Spiro Agnew is supposed to have said, is still the greatest nation in the country"

Either that quote by Agnew ("The United States, for all its faults, is still the greatest nation in the country") is a gaffe and Hitchens is using it ironically or Agnew himself meant it ironically and Hitchens is directly quoting that.

googling 'Spiro Agnew greatest nation in the country' turns up a lot btw, including at least 2 articles by Gore Vidal whom Hitchens mentions right after the quote.

The Agnew quote is one of his many gaffes. He was the Dan Quayle or dubya of his time.

There was a popular gag gift book produced in the 70s called "the Wit and Wisdom of Spiro T. Agnew," that was about 200 blank pages of paper.

I had a copy until just recently.
