I think this is an interesting piece of history that never happened.

Eisenhower had a message drafted in case of a disaster at D-Day too. You have to be prepared if things go south.

The failure was Plan B apparently.

I imagine a failure would likely have had a very adverse effect on the space program, but I am thinking with a modern mindset with 24-hour news and hyper-partisan capitalization... they space program did survive the Apollo 1 disaster, which I'm not sure it would have in modern times.

I basically agree.

But in the heart of the cold war i honestly think it would have increased the resolve and there would be tremendous pressure and support to press on with even more effort.

Today I agree fully agree that it might cause space exploration to be put off for decades.
