Here's an interesting question:

Was Robert Johnson the first musician that it was said they sold their soul to the devil for their talent?

I think it's fun to ponder!

Definitely not the first. Early nineteenth century violinist Niccolo Paganini was said to have sold his soul to the Devil. In fact the rumour seems to have resulted in some difficulty in getting church approval for his burial.

I would suspect, theoretically, that through history any person who had freakish talent might be suspected of being in league with whatever devil-like entity propagated evil in whatever culture. In my model of how the social world works, mythology evolves as guidance toward the better or more efficient way of doing things. Morals/ethics work to in tandem with mythology achieve better social conditions, but those who cheat can often exploit those faithfully executing morality and get ahead unfairly. Thus anyone too far ahead will be looked at with suspicion of subverting that cultures morals/ethics and be in league with the "devil".

Music video song Dani California by Red Hot Chili Peppers. An excellent example of a visual representation of the development of music in the second half of the 20th century.

American Epic

Looks like a very good documentary on early American music. It'son PBS in he US and BBC4 here in the UK. There's also a 5 disc box set to go with it as well as a further cd of cover versions from more contemporary artists but recorded on old equipment.

I've ordered it all

I think that someone that is over-looked in music history is Guido of Arezzo. Most of the modern musical notation in use today in the West are from him, lol.
