Came here to ask a similar question - are there any history book threads here, or should I start one?

TYTY.

Tablet was being a pain last night and kept closing the drop-down box so I couldn't search properly.

Re: The Low Content thread for History Buffs

I had to share this one: Mad Jack Churchill, British Commando in WW2 who often went into battle with a bow and arror, and a Claymore. And a set of bagpipes.

He supposedly said 'any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed'.

He disembarked from sea-based assault craft, leading the men by playing the bagpipes.

He even signalled the start of a raid with an arrow into the chest of an enemy NCO, then ran in screaming "COMMANDOOO" with his sword waving.

Jack Churchill's Sword

Brilliant read.

From the wiki link

'In retirement, however, his eccentricity continued. He startled train conductors and passengers by throwing his briefcase out of the train window each day on the ride home. He later explained that he was tossing his case into his own back garden so he wouldn't have to carry it from the station.'

Re: The Low Content thread for History Buffs

Some French politicians and historians are none too happy with Assassin's Creed: Unity's depiction of the French Revolution. When I saw the commercials, I kinda figured there would be some butthurt.

I mean, it's just a game, but it does seem to employ some of the common (and often unfair) stereotypes about the French Revolution generally, and the Jacobins in particular.

French historians must be perma-angry - especially the social and military historians. Imagine the sense of doom it must be French and wallow in French history and try and find the points where you can show some national pride. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack when you're 95% certain the needle was already taken away by some other nation.

Re: The Low Content thread for History Buffs

The French should just stick to making wine, cheese, and whipping up a good plate of grub. Along with continuing to try to hide/gloss over the fact they sent young children, many under the age of 12, to Auschwitz-Birkenau to be gassed, along with thousands of adults. It took 60 years and a court case to finally make the nation of smelly cheese mongers to admit their guilt/cover up and perpetual head-in-the-sand thinking.

Here's to the death of Marat.

The French are in their last death throes and will rattle on in the dustbin of history as a nation of know-nothing blowhards, bombastic warriors, and parasites. Even Voltaire can't rescue them.

C'est la vie!

Phonetic alphabetically speaking, Waterloo Agincourt Trafalgar?

Also, not a Frenchman, so it's a bit like saying the French have a good army cos the Foreign Legion are a bunch of tough bastards.

its funny someone would make a statements like this in a lowcontent thread for history buffs considering this whole french are bad soldiers and cowards is a very recent stereotype.

It is recent but in fairness to the French when they decided to become cowards they went really big.

The most Flamboyant Coward award goes to....

still it serves more than a few constituencies for the stereotype of a weak France to persist, they did own about half the world at one point

Dan Carlin is the host of the first episode about Nixon.

Re: The Low Content thread for History Buffs

damn I can't believe I've been on 2p2 as long as I have and never knew there was a history forum.
I'm a huge history buff (dbl major in poli sci n history at cal) and have recently discovered hardcore history podcast by dan carlin.

actually makes me look forward to long car rides.
his series on WWI is fantastic and I really hope he follows it up with a series on WWII which may be the most fascinating albeit terrible event in modern history.

Based on your phrasing I'm assuming i'm not telling you something you know;

Ghosts of the Ostfront covers the Eastern Front and is amazing ldo

If you google it it'll take you right to his site where you can buy all 5 episodes. I'd link it but don't know if that's okay.

Logical Insanity is a standalone Blitz which is HH 42 (2.5 hours) and an extra addendum episode (1.5)

Logical Insanity covers the morality of dropping the bombs

I'm thru the 1st two episodes and while I def like it I don't think it's quite as good as his series on WWI.
still worth the $6 obv.

Re: The Low Content thread for History Buffs

Hope you weren't led astray and please post once you've finished but I've also yet to listen to the WWI pod after the first episode, so I'm glad to hear your praise

The thing I'll always remember is the one upping of atrocities between Germany and the Soviets when they were passing through towns
