Re: The Low Content thread for History Buffs

Hey guys, I've been pretty busy with some school work and various other activities and actually didn't realize that this forum was up and running until today but I wanted to quickly introduce myself to everyone - I'm currently a History/Political Science major at the University of Delaware, and I'm especially interested in Soviet/Russian history as well as most all others I suppose. I've taken some classes on English history before and after 1715 up until 1800 or so, so you might see me chiming in if any of the discussion heads that way, but for this semester at least I'll probably stick to some of the Soviet stuff since I'm in one Soviet history class right now and am also researching a paper about the rise of Stalin for my 400-level seminar. I'll probably have some threads about this stuff up sometime soon, so if you've got anything to add be sure and stop in and be sure to bring a glass of Vodka and a whole lot of revolution.

Something along these lines, maybe. But are they polite enough?

I suggest Historians. That´s what we want to be!

I misread your post. Thought it was one of those over-my-head references that happen so often. You have to admit. History contains ample histrionics. As does the present, at least in my little corner.

Bubonic Plague wiped out nearly half of the Mediterranean world's population in the 6th century, effectively gutting the population and economy of a resurgent Roman (Byzantine) Empire and clearing the way for Western "barbarian" kingdoms and Islamic Empires in the Middle East (which capitalized on the decline of both the Byzantine and Sassanid Empires). The plague returned in the 14th century (the "Black Death") and wiped out about 1/3 of Europe, causing a profound labor shortage and increasing social mobility that arguably helped make the Renaissance possible. Both plagues had a profound effect outside of Europe as well. The Black Death made it possible for the Ming to overthrow the Mongol Yuan Dynasty in China as well.

In 1755, a massive earthquake and tsunami practically destroyed the city of Lisbon, killing possibly over 50,000 people. That disaster is both enormous in scope and seems rather timely now.

Also, depending on your perspective, the Columbian Exchange could be viewed as a huge "natural disaster" for a variety of New World flora and fauna, not to mention for Native Americans, about 95% of whom died out within a few hundred years from disease and warfare (primarily the former).

Found this awesome gambling related history quote a couple weeks ago:

"History, to a philosopher, is what gambling was to the Marquis de Dangeau: he saw a system, relations, consequences, where others saw only the caprice of fortune." ~Edward Gibbon
