The biggest name I can think of is [Assassin's Creed, but I know there are several games that put the player in context in historical settings where the research teams simulate the setting fairly accurately. With virtual reality coming along, are games and simulations the future of history lessons? How much easier will it be to learn the situational how's and why's of life "back in time" by experiencing, or quasi-experiencing it?

What are some other examples of fun simulations?

Back in the early days of computer gaming I played a lot of HPS Simulations titles. They were very good war game and battle simulations. You could play versus the computer or email moves back and forth with another player. I grew up playing a lot of Avalon Hill board war games and these were an advanced computerized version of those. I haven't played any of them in years though.

Panzer General has always been my favourite.

There is a forum somewhere where a bunch of guys have modded the hell out of it
and turned it into an amazing game. Challenging but fun.
