I just can't get enough of this particular time period and location. James Ellroy really was the impetus to get me hooked on it.

If you haven't already, I highly suggest you try the game LA Noire. It is available for PC, XBox360, or PS3. If Ellroy sparked your interest in this period of LA's history, LA Noire will be right up your alley. I've played the entire game, and it is excellent.

Have you seen the thread on that game? It's pretty brutal. I'm waiting to get the game when its like $20 or less.

The book City of Quartz (Mike Davis) is academia's favorite book about the history of LA. Some real interesting stuff, but the slant is heavily left.

look up the book LA Noir on amazon and then all the books they suggest based. on that.... some clark murder trial... mickey cohen... howard hughes

also, doneny, mulholland type books.... hollywood scandal books are good too... like hollywood babylon

not sure my suggestions exactly dovetail with 1940's but should point you in interesting book browsing direction

FWIW hated black dahlia by ellroy but to each his own

hated the book, the dialogue especially (see if i can post some eggrigious examples).. would not read another by him altho sometimes i've found huge variation in other authors works

eh, you probably won't in Ellroy. Most of his stuff is very similar in style and substance

Some are more terse than others. I think American Tabloid is as extreme as he gets, but I'm not sure if I've read all his stuff. I like his style--it forces fast reading and really punches up the action.

probably obvious and NOT 1940's...... Chinatown the movie is awesome. follow-up the Two Jakes didn't get good reviews but has the LA old-time cinematography vibe.
