I think the real benefit is in tilt control, if I have a run of bad beats I will quit all tables, have a smoke and that me ready to go again, nicely chilled.

Since the middle of last year, I have been making a very conscious effort to cut down my intake, and the results have been good so far. I have learned to be content without weed for most of the day. But I still wonder if I will ever be able to totally stop. Although I don't rely on it nearly as much as I used to, I still need it every day.

As far as poker goes, I've learned that for me, weed undoubtedly makes me a worse player. I used to smoke and play all the time but now I rarely ever do it. I lose my ability to analyze hands at any depth at all, everything is based a surface reaction. I do love playing and then rewarding myself after a long session with a good smoke, but I wonder if I am missing something.
Wow I am 100% in the exact same situation as you. Except I've only been smoking for 3 years. It's weird when Im sober and at home and bored I get the urge to smoke weed, if I don't have any weed then Im just extra bored for the entire day. The only period of excitement and happiness is when I know I got weed to smoke and I am rolling it. But after I smoke I don't even enjoy it anymore... I don't feel good or anything, I just feel dazed with the physical effects like dry mouth and eyes. I want to quit totally but Im addicted... I just get bored without it.

People can certainly get addicted to weed, and it's not nearly as trivial as you make it out to be. For some people it's a serious problem.

I smoked 5-6 times a day for a good 7 years, and I eventually just got kind of sick of it. I would still do it anyways when I was with friends sometimes but never by myself anymore. At this point it's something I do pretty occasionally and usually involves live music, or if I just run across some bud that's out of this world that I can't help from tasting. I realized how tired of weed I was and how negatively it was affecting my life while on an acid trip fwiw......for those who are having a hard time limiting their consumption try taking a hit of acid and doing some self reflection (sounds crazy I know, but worked for me).

I'm currently on my fifth day of not smoking weed, and I feel great. It's by far the longest I've gone without taking a hit in years, and I feel like my head is becoming a little more clear each day. It's not that I don't want to smoke weed anymore, it's just that I don't want to depend on it. I am going to try and keep this going as long as I can.

i don't necessarily think you will play better because you are high, but it will let you grind out longer sessions without getting bored. on top of that you will be more indifferent to suck outs and bad beats.
hope that helps!
This is 100% correct.

Harvard doin' its thang- really interesting unbiased article

Like a lot of people here, I'm a chimney- always always high. I simply think that overuse is where the problems start. When getting and being high replaces or becomes the main activity of your day and life, then that's when pot will start to have negative consequences. I love pot. I love poker. The two together should make for a kick-ass time. But why can't I just simply enjoy the pleasures of both apart from eachother? Another example- I was a ski bum last year and skiied high all the time. However, I skiied the best and the hardest when I wasn't high, yet I hardly ever did it. Why? I think I equate weed to automatically having a good time, and so by adding it to anything that's already fun (or boring), I will be making it even better. It's like the proverbial cherry-on-top of everything that just gets completely habit forming.

I just don't see how weed could actually make someone play better. You still might win, and be a winning player, but you probably would have won still if you were sober (and probably more).

Obviously weed is not as dangerous as more serious drugs like heroin or coke. However I think its this line of thinking that actually makes weed such a dangerous drug. Don't get me wrong; I love marijuana as much as anyone and probably always will. However in the past I've always convinced myself that it didn't matter how much I smoked, since it was only weed. It's almost as if weed plays a trick on you this way. It appears to be such a harmless and fun loving drug that it makes you believe that there is no danger in smoking it. However this is simply not the case. If you continuously smoke weed throughout your life it will undoubtedly have a strong effect on you.

I've learned that as much as I love it, I no longer want to depend on it for my happiness. I've realized that the past few nights I've been extremely bored at times, but it's not because I've been doing anything differently than I have in the past, other than not smoking weed. The reason that I am bored, is because I don't have weed to trick me into thinking I am not bored. Anyway I'm too tired to write anymore but hopefully I will touch on this tomorrow.

i feel like its like anti-tilt medicine for me... i still get pissed about losing big hands for a minute but i forget about it soon after my favorite red hot chili peppers song comes on and i take a nice rip. im in college and poker's a way for me to make money to have a good time with without working and still being able to focus on school (sometimes). if i didnt smoke i feel like id be just fine i'd just have a harder time dealing with swings/beats. i stop smoking for 1 week every month just to get my tolerance down (i suggest this, massive money saver) and i feel like it keeps a pretty good balance for me.

Good luck, I can relate to everything you've said.. Do you notice you are more irritable than usual while trying to cut down? I've quit a few times for 1-2months and this was one of the biggest issues that got me back on it..

Nowadays I've done so much damage to my lungs I can no longer smoke, and have been using a volcano ~once/twice a day. I do plan to quit entirely, but I am worried about my irritability issues returning and I do find it harder to motivate myself to grind sessions without it sometimes..

To those who believe its harmless - while it may not lead to cancer, longterm use definitely takes it's toll.

GL to all trying to cut back/quit
