We need to pepper stars with emails about this. The DoJ announcement today makes it very clear that all people playing away from US soil should be able to continue to do so. FTP recognizes this but Stars has been extra cautious and they should now be able to relax that policy.

Re: Steps required to open bank and poker accounts in Canada
Proof of residence likely will not be hard to attain but staying for an extended period of time in canada without good reason, I could see there being issues.
Border guard: What are you doing in Canada?
2+2er: Playing poker because of the ban in the US
Border guard:... please wait a second sir

Re: Steps required to open bank and poker accounts in Canada
Would any Canadians comment on this please?
-Does Canada view poker as work? Lets say I get my tourist visa for 6mo and I go to Canada to ski/mtn bike and I play poker online. Is that work? Basically would I need a work visa?
-What happens when I go to Canada with 30k in my BA and leave with 200k after 6mo, was I working? Am I in trouble?
Im going to talk to an immigration lawyer, or someone, soon so I might be able to get these questions answered, but just wondering if anyone knew.
Thanks!

If you're making that much money, just sign up for a class or two at a university and get a student visa.

Is that all it really takes to get a visa is a class or two?

I don't know the details about Canada, but the reason you can't work when you go to another country is because they don't want you taking a job from a local. Typically, restrictions are not going to apply to online poker.

Not sure about a DUI specifically, but in general it takes a lot of time and money to try and clear it up.
I don't want to look it up, but I'm pretty sure its 6 mos per year so you have to remain out of the country entirely for the next 6 mos.

yeah its 6 months total per year.

I'd also like to know the answer to this if anyone has some info. I considered going the student route but paying 25k+ per year to stay in Canada seems a bit steep, not to mention the time you'd have to devote to your studies to avoid failing out and losing the visa. But if you can get a visa for just a class or two a semester, this could end up working out really well for a lot of us, I think.

You won't get a work Visa regardless and you wouldn't be declaring what you're doing anyway if you are skiing/mtn biking for 6 mos other than saying going for an extended vacation.
However, there's a very good chance at some time or another you'd have to explain what you do and how you can afford to take a 6 month leisure vacation. Presuming you leave and re-enter Canada at some point during that time.
No idea who is going to be looking into your bank account?

Off the top of my head I'm pretty sure you need to be registered as a full-time student. That definition obviously varies depending on what institution you attend. Also international student fees are usually pretty expensive so that's something to factor in.

Re: Steps required to open bank and poker accounts in Canada
I've talked to lawyers on both sides of the border, work visa not happening is the consensus... student visa could work, but of course you need to stay enrolled then.... you can hire a lawyer to represent you on all the paperwork and draw up a plan, but go into it pessimistic because most players will not fit any of the visas
