so its not possible to enter Canada with a DUI on your record? Is their some type of time frame where this is no longer the case? Or some type of form you can possibly fill out? I was pretty clueless about this and obv have a DUI on my record and live like 20 mins from the Windsor border.

Yes, it's true. Most border crossings now scan passports starting around 2 years ago into Canada (at least in NY & VT). My friends who have been going to Canada for years upon years all of sudden got denied for various offenses, many DUI's. Older friend of mine actually got denied for a offense committed when he was 19 years old in 1983, yes, 28 years ago. He's currently submitting lots of paperwork (and $) to be cleared again. Has taken 10+ months so far.

I'm not an expert by any means on this, my based on what my friends are going through, you can apply to get reinstated to visit Canada 5 years after your DUI and you can enter again 10 years after your DUI. They don't mess around up there.

technically this is only the first step (and easiest). but assuming you play msnl hsnl and are moving large amounts, + what site youre going to play on. it's a little bit more complicated than driving over. i dont want to type publically obviously, i will say you are correct though most banks will allow you to open it up with as little as that...

This probably hasn't happened yet on Stars, because I just noticed you can't even edit your country. So a U.S. players would have to go through Stars support and I don't even think their support is responding to U.S. players about any of these issues right?

Not sure about Full Tilt because you can change your country I think and maybe cash out information.

And is it just accepted now that we can't cross any borders to play and we have to officially change our residence and bank information to even play?

If I decide to go to Canada without a visa, the max I can stay is 6 months. How long do I have to return to the U.S. before I can go back to Canada for another 6 month stint?
04-19-2011 , 02:17 PM
This might be off topic, but do any of you who are fleeing to Canada think the fish follow you?

I thought I would post this here, since I've been doing a lot of research and it might help some of you.

There is an option available to players who have $150K to invest in the national bank of Costa Rica (insured and safe by all accounts.) You buy a laddered CD, and your money is released monthly over the next few years (3-5 I think?) while gaining interest. By doing this, you are granted temporary residency (called rentista) and do not have to leave the country every 90 days on a visa. After 3 years, you get permanent residency. The application process takes a long time, so for the first year you still have to come and go every 90 days to extend your visa.

This is a very common practice among retirees and is described here:
http://www.therealcostarica.com/resi...residency.html
and discussed at length here:
http://forums.arcr.net/index.php?/fo...urrent-policy/

Having that kind of money tied up is a pain, but this is the only reasonable solution I have found that does not involve being a perpetual tourist and relying on immigration to always let you back in the country ever 3 months.

Q for Americans who have had their FTP/Stars accts disabled:

Is the freeze anchored to your ACCOUNT, or simply your LOGIN location? In other words, if you were to go to Canada, would you be able to login / play / transfer on your existing account?

Or have FTP/Stars essentially 'tagged' you as US players (based on your address registered with them), and frozen your accounts (irrespective of login location) until they figure out what the next step is?

You can log in, look at your balances, cash in your FPPs, etc. I have no idea if you can transfer money, but I doubt it. I have no idea what happens if you try to cash out, but that's obviously pointless/foolish until they announce something. If you try to play, you get blocked with a popup.

Kind of surprised we don't have a definitive answer to this yet, since it's so fundamental to the question of transferring / withdrawing. I've heard a rumor that Stars has locked all US player accounts, such that it doesn't matter where in the world you log in from >> you're ID'd as a US player and you can't play / withdraw / transfer, but that FTP has not. In other words, even if you're a US player, you can log in from a non-US location, and you will have transfer ability (I'm not sure about actual playing ability.) Can anyone confirm that?

logging in to FT from a non-us location you can play, I have no idea bout transferring

So you're saying if I log into FTP from say Montreal or London as a US player I can play on FTP that is currently locked??
04-19-2011 , 10:59 PM
as of now that is what I've been told
04-20-2011 , 12:46 AM
I've heard the same thing. Not sure if they can transfer or cash out though.

I mentioned this already somewhere (maybe this thread), but the bank branch and how much history you have with them matters the most. All the banks can accept online gambling transactions. If they choose to do so, is an entirely different matter.

It's possible to enter with a record, but it 100% depends on the customs agent you get (presuming you'd be driving across) and how diligent they are. I know someone with a record that has crossed multiple times, but he's also been turned away a bunch of times as well.

Not sure about a DUI specifically, but in general it takes a lot of time and money to try and clear it up.

I don't want to look it up, but I'm pretty sure its 6 mos per year so you have to remain out of the country entirely for the next 6 mos.

I'm pretty sure that's correct. Seems that many Americans are underestimating how hard it will be to move to Canada for an extended amount of time.
