Not to derail too much, but if anyone can comment on Bell vs Rogers as an internet provider in Canada (Toronto area), I think it could be pretty relevant. Which is faster/more reliable?

Is anyone renting just over the border and how does that work with the internet? I realize you are in Canada, but if sites use certain programs for detecting your location, can near the border cities still be blocked for coming as a location still in the US?

1) Drive up from Portland, OR to Vancouver, BC. I will bring bank statements, my current lease, etc. just in case. I'll also bring cash (less than 10k).

2) Set up bank account in Vancouver using my USA Passport, Drivers License, and American address.

3) Pick up cheap, short-lease apt from Craigslist. Get Internet service/land line up and running, request bill in advance (proof of residency).

4) Create MoneyBookers account using new Canadian address and Bank Account.

5) Use new Address/Account to reopen FTP and UB.

6) Tie MoneyBookers to FTP/UB, begin withdrawing money to MoneyBookers.

7) Withdraw money from MoneyBookers to Bank Account.

8) Transfer money from Bank Account to US BofA acct.

Foolproof?

Andrew
So when I withdraw from FTP to Moneybookers, must I do it in CAD? The MB website seems to indicate that USD is not an option. I hope I am wrong about this, but I only see EUR, GBP, CAD, JPY, SGD, HUF, AED, SAR, QAR, MAD, JOD, TND, OMR, RSD and RON.

I was thinking that we could do FTP>MB>Canadian Bank>US Bank(BoA) all in USD to avoid conversion fees. Is this not true?

If it is possible to go USD the whole way, which Canadian Bank is recommended?

Once I get my Moneybookers account successfully updated to my new Canadian address (which I just did), should I wait until I tie my MB account to a Canadian bank before attempting a withdrawal from FTP, or can I request the withdrawal now and tie the bank account on after that (since FTP withdrawals take a long time anyway)?

My current Canadian bank does not do USD accounts. That's why I am asking, since I will need to open another bank account.

Thanks!

Was this in person or on the phone?

Also, does anyone know if you can use an Interac debit card to verify your moneybookers acct?
06-21-2011 , 01:59 PM
Echecks appear to be working. I just got an approved message this morning for the first time.

I just got confirmation from MB that Interac cards do not work for verification. Does anyone know what canadian banks will issue a visa/mc debit card?

You can't do this over the phone.

I opened one last Friday and had scheduled an appointment beforehand. I would suggest you try another BMO branch.

I just opened an account in person at BMO 15 minutes ago with US Passport and US drivers License.

I said I was a self-employed investor. Zero trouble, debit card in hand in 20 minutes.

This was at a branch. They showed me their official pamphlet about what ID is required, and "One ID from Column A" was required. Column A only showed Canadian issued ID options.

Anyway, CIBC was way easier. I'm glad you guys haven't had trouble with BMO.

Is it a visa or MasterCard debitcard?

Which Canadian bank(s) is it that we can get a USD checking acct and transfer to Bank of America?

I read it somewhere a few days ago. Now I can't find it.

CIBC offers a USD account, not sure if/how you can make transfers from it to your American bank.

Okay, Thanks.

I have learned that BMO and TD also offer USD accounts. I was thinking someone in one of these post black friday threads was saying specifically Bank of America could be used to transfer to/from one of the major Canadian banks.

If anyone knows which one(s), please let us know.

Thanks.

It actually does not have a logo and I forgot to ask if it was a temporary card. I'm going back today so I'll ask.

IIUC RBC gift cards work for MB verification and you can purchase them the same day (btw, if anyone is making a run for the border and wants to pick some of these up for me, see my ad in marketplace)

Not sure about Cad bank to BOA, but I'm fairly certain you can move money from RBC Canada to RBC USA very easily if you have both accounts.

Echecks confirmed working for myself and another poster. Both of us received the money in less than 36 hours with no fees. Only drawbacks are there's a $2650 maximum per 24 hours and it has to be in Canadian.
