Steps required to open bank and poker accounts in Canada

What is necessary for an American to open a Canadien bank account?

What about a poker account at a euro site like party poker? Does one need to officiallly own or be on a lease for a property? How do you provide a utility bill if you are just living in a friends house? Do you need a canadien id? Is that even possible for an american to get? I really don't even know what to ask can someone go over all the steps please

It's easy for an American to open an account at a Canadian bank, just walk in and open your account. However from what I've read Stars and FTP are blocking players based on nationality not what country you are playing from. You'd have to establish a new non-American account with Stars or FTP which would of course be violating their terms. Also it's doubtful that the games would be any good without 99% of the American players.

Unless you renounce US citizenship, obtain Canadian citizenship, wait X years (I forget how many), then opening a Canadian bank account would do you exactly 0 good.

As a US citizen, AFAIK all Canadian banks would be required to disclose transactions with the US govt. So you'd still have to deal with the issue of legality in the US. You'd also have to be declaring the income and paying taxes on it. So it would be pretty obvious what you're up to.

i am not worried about the US knowing that i would be playing. the us govt isn't going after players. i would report taxes just like before. all i want to know is what do i need to do in order to deposit and be able to cashout on partypoker or a euro site. thanks

Like the first reply said, it's easy to get an account. Get a valid ID, an address with some bills going to it and you're pretty much set. Unless you plan to actually move to Canada, it's a dumb idea.

You'd end up playing over a VPN, which would be fine, but eventually you'll run into trouble managing your deposits/cash outs and your account with get flagged/locked. You also won't easily be able to clear it up because you obviously are actually circumventing the rules.

This exact same scenario came up frequently with the Neteller fiasco a few years back. Also worth noting is that this type of thing was wayyy more feasible back then as well (and there were still problems). Now it's significantly harder to move money around between poker sites, banks and e-wallets.

I know Neteller can't be used with a Canadian address, but what about Moneybookers?

Obviously if you live in Canada you can play online poker there. If you live in Canada with Canadian bank accounts you could also obviously withdraw to them. As a US citizen though, you'd still have to abide by US tax laws.

Yes you can use Moneybookers with a Canadian address. I'm pretty sure there are several threads regarding Canadian poker/e-wallets in the Internet Poker forum.

Re: Steps required to open bank and poker accounts in Canada

idk about Canada but I was living in Australia for 3 months as a US citizen. I got a bank account no problem, just needed id (US passport worked) and an address that they didn't even verify. Some brief research says that Canada will want to verify the address so it has to be legit. Party only needed my ID (again US passport worked) as well as a bill to that address. I was able to deposit and withdraw to/from my Australian bank account and although party in general was a pain to deal with (including them asking me why I needed any more than 5k online and that "you can just play with what's already online") the bank account/proof wasn't hard at all. I can't really speak for Canada and am doing some research on it now but if it's anything like Australia as long as you really do move there even short-term it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Re: Steps required to open bank and poker accounts in Canada

So you open a bank account with $1k and then receive, in some of our cases, assuming we are paranoid and want to empty all unneeded funds, six figures in withdrawals? Is there a chance that the Canadian Authorities would close your account and not allow access to your funds? Should you tell the bank what you are planning to do in advance and get permission?

Re: Steps required to open bank and poker accounts in Canada

I was looking into renting a place in montreal and planed on traveling back and forth from NJ. Would i need to apply for a visa or just use my passport and get a driving licence when i rent my place, but I would still travel to montreal at least once a month to maintain studio collect mail and pay bills. Does this sound reasonable and doable?
