Question to HS guys: Perspective on life before and after becoming rich?

What did you think was your purpose in life when you were broke? What are your goals now that you are relatively rich? I see a lot of people discuss tv shows, pets and restaurants all the time. This can't be the only things in your life that are interesting enough to talk about. Are there any interesting things YOU do? By interesting, I don't mean clubbing and drinking. Travelling, clubbing, restaurants etc are ok in moderation. But these aren't things you create. This is not the type of stuff you want on your tombstone right?

What kind of perspective do you have about being rich now that you are rich? What kind of things that you couldn't do before can do now with the extra freedom you have?

Money was never a big motivation for me, except as a way to keep score. The real excitement is playing the game. Donald Trump

I think it's a legit thread (I reacted badly to his posts at first) and he's not a high stakes player so I don't really think it's that relevant what he's done/doing. Gonna leave the answers to guys more interesting than me though, since I just do the stuff he said in his OP anyway.

Re: Question to HS guys: Perspective on life before and after becoming rich?

Maybe something that being rich does is alleviate you of a lot of stress that other people face and to really step outside your comfort zone is just inviting that stress into your life. Maybe having the ability to do absolutely nothing each day and just relax if you choose is one of the best things money can offer.

Also you seem to think that creating something is the be all and end all, some of the most creative people in history have lived miserable lives. Sure they may have left something great behind them but it didnt really satisfy them while living. Money does not give you the ability to change the world or to create something amazing, that comes from the person. If someone chooses to live their life by being happy and content doing the things they love then whose to say that they have not lived the best life they could have lived?

Great thing about being young and rich and having all the freedom in the world is...you can do anything you want. As in, you can do whatever you love the most. You can push your personal limits in the activity you're interested in. You don't have to do stuff that makes you miserable.

The El Bulli chef, Taylor Caby, Angelina Jolie...these guys are creating stuff in a field they're passionate about. They're not waiting around and filling the void with "Homeland" before the next season of Breaking Bad starts(hyperbole to get the point across).

i find it somewhat ironic that you condemn 2p2ers for watching tv shows and praise angelina jolie for making movies.

to answer your question i don't think money directly changes your perspective in the sense that you can buy material things, but it does very much indirectly as a result of being able to travel and meet interesting people who have also been successful and willing to share their philosophies.

I'm not sure what qualifies as rich but here's my 2 cents.

When I was younger, I didn't have a purpose and that's not a bad thing at all. I did what was required of me and then I did things that made me happy. I was never sad because I was broke. I hung out with broke friends and they are still my friends today because I'm happy when I'm with them.

As I got older and have more control of my life, basically, I graduated college and found poker, it was easier (and more choices) to do things that made me happy.

The question is what you need to do to be happy.

I use something I called a happiness scale. Basically, every day, I think of activities and people that increase my happiness level and I do my best to do those activities and be around those people. It's amazing how talking to people who are motivated, energetic, and have a thirst for life motivates you. This is the main reason why people talk about pets and restaurants. Because it gives them opportunities to talk about things that make them happy. It's even better if they can talk to people who makes them happy as well.

I do my best to avoid people who suck the energy out of me and people who are negative. They pull you down. It's not a coincidence that when you think of your friends, you think of people who bring smiles to your face. Negative people don't do that and don't contribute anything to your life but pain and annoyances. Although it's gut-wretching, over time, we naturally move away from these people. For me, I make sure I avoid them because it's going to happen anyway. I might as well start now.

If you want to be happy, make it your #1 goal in life. Once you start focusing on being happy, your life will be better. You know that exercising and eating healthy foods will make you happy but if for whatever reason, you don't want to do it, this basically means that you don't value happiness enough. Imagine if I give you a million dollar every time you go to the gym, would you do it? Of course you would. But like everyone with money know, in the end, it's not the money that get you to smile every day. It's your friends and family that you love and care for.

It seems daunting but if you strategize how to be happy, you can achieve it. DAILY. And it's not that hard.

It takes simple steps. It takes time. If you find yourself giving a reason why you can't do it, find a friend who doesn't have this attitude and ask him to help you out. He will help you out. All of us have someone who love life and they will be ECSTATIC to help you live a better life. I always love it when someone asks me how to be healthy or what place/restaurant to visit.

Everything along the way to happiness is just gravy. Whether it is making money, creating products, going places, etc. Just make sure you make happiness your #1 goal. It's like making sure playing perfect poker is your #1 goal. The money will follow, your peers will respect you, etc.

So write down the things that you can get rid of in your life to make you feel better ie weed, soda, fast foods, etc. You will see a change in your mood right away.

Start today. Put yourself in positions to BE HAPPY! You deserve it.

what was the end goal you had in mind after becoming rich? what kind of goals do you have now after becoming financially secure? just sit on sofa and watch dexter and boardwalk empire? doesn't it get boring after a while?

he posted that earlier in the day in the censored thread so it's kinda silly to ask only to pass judgement, no?
