OK then, how about this one. As a large corporate entity does Pokerstars claim tax relief on charitable donations made from confiscated funds?

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Man :

"The rate of corporation tax is 0% for almost all types of income, the only exceptions are that the profits of banks are taxed at 10%, as is rental (or other) income from land and buildings situated on the Isle of Man."

The whole reason they moved from the Carribean to the Isle of Man was because of the 0% corporate tax rate.

Hi,

I haven't played poker for years.
I am in the US since April and wanted to start playing once in a while again,
Since I saw poker is not allowed anymore for us citizens I used VPN to log into my account, didn't know that it is also not allowed for German citizens who are in the usa.

So today I got an email from pokerstars.
I admitted playing with a VPN explaining that I am originally from Germany.
I only have 200$ on my account.

I don't care if the take my 200$, but do I have to fear any legal steps here in the USA from the government?
Or is the worst case that my money is gone and my account stays suspended?

Thanks,
TBruck

You'll be fine with the US gov, they've never gone after players. It's the billion $ companies they're after. Your $200 and Stars account are most likely gone though.

Did Pokerstars redistribute funds to the players if the person using a VPN from US was multiaccounting?

I don't think he multiaccounted...he used a VPN to supersede the rules to play poker from real money in the U.S ..I could be wrong but that's what I got from it

And

Basically: dont use a VPN

If:

a) PokerStars was able to prove that a player gained an unfair advantage in breach of our terms of service;
AND
b) they were playing from within the United States of America (or territories of the United States of America);

then PokerStars redistributed the unfair winnings to the victims of that activity. This includes multi-accounting, collusion, and similar.

0% corporate tax is so ****ing ballin. Do countries do this because of the benefits a huge company like Pokerstars brings to the local economy with jobs etc?

does stars wait a couple months to confiscate, so that they give you enough time to figure it out and get your $ off right away?

No. We freeze accounts as soon as we become suspicious of relevant activity, and conduct investigations as quickly as possible.

During late 2011 and the first half of 2012, we had a lag that caused some delays.

Would Pokerstars redistribute founds if it was 'only' multiaccounting?

Why does Pokerstars allow VPN at all when VPN clearly make it easier to multiaccount?

What are Pokerstars stance on this thread? http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/29...-more-1354618/

Yes: Whenever we confiscate funds from players for harming other players, we redistribute those funds to the victims of illicit play.

That's been our long-standing policy - the most obvious high-profile case was in the case of the World Championship of Online Poker Main Event in 2007, where we did this to the tune of over $1.2million. We also do it routinely in smaller cases.

There are many pieces of software that could be used to break our rules. For example, instant messaging clients could be use to collude or otherwise break our rules.

It is our view that it is better to prohibit and take action against the prohibited behaviour, rather than seeking to ban whole classes of software which have innocent uses as well*.

The Terms of Service outline our rules on multi-accounting (and, indeed, various other issues discussed in that thread). If you have a more specific query about our rules, please email support@pokerstars.com anytime.

*In addition, the premise of your question: that "VPN clearly make it easier to multiaccount" is subject to debate

Surely for the practice of account sharing hiding the location being played from is useful?

This might be just multi accounting to hide who is being played against or taking over an account deep in an MTT (Account Selling) like the Sorrel Mizzi case. Acount Selling to anyone apart from those who can get to your address is clearly made easier via VPNs (and remote PC type software).

Multi accounting as in using multiple fake accounts may not be affected by VPNs but account sharing and account selling relies on it to some extent. These are just sub branches of "multi accounting".

As I said in the bit you quoted, it is subject to debate. It appears that in this thread, people are making assumptions about what VPNs can and can't do, and what PokerStars can and can't detect. Not all of those assumptions are accurate, but it's difficult for us to offer meaningful feedback/discussion on this issue without identifying which of those assumptions are inaccurate... which has the unfortunate consequence of identifying those assumptions to those who break our rules.

IP addresses are just one part of the information that we use to take into account where people are using our services from: we have access to other information as well. In addition, these are not algorithmic/binary issues - there is a degree of judgement that needs to go along with any such investigation or review.

A reasonable analogy would be to painting a picture: Each brush stroke adds up to a larger picture, and if you change one brush stroke, then although that particular spot on the painting may look a little different, it doesn't change the overall picture very much.

What if we could see what country people was logged in from. Or if it was simply unknown. That would help us spot accounts with similar ways of logging in.

The registered location of the account is basically useless to gain info on suspect accounts.
