viffer~~~~ lol. good times at the wynn and you still driving that E55?
And yes, being nice to fish is good business in general. Here is a fun little fact... happy fish play longer and play worse. 3, 4, maybe 5? years ago I chatted this guy Randy Glass up at the borgata 25/50 so much he called my all in on the river anyway with a busted 9 high flush draw with a comment "you earned it kid."
You just dont' get this kind of freebies pissing people off.
the two times i've played with viffer hu online he won multiple stacks off me quick and then started berating me in chat completely unprovoked. to date the only other person who's done this to me is negrodamus on FTP. clowns.
edit: viffer also left quick after i won a little bit back both times.
you could say the same thing about 20 million people putting out these poker videos, which i will assume is NOT +EV for most of them long term, especially considering that online poker appears to be shrinking.

at least we make money of the vids instead of just inflating our ego by being like "oh the fish is so bad, lol!"
i wish viffers post didnt need anyone to post in here and confirm its validity. its really sad that something like this is neccessary.
if no one ever put their money in bad against you, you wouldn't win.
when a better player berates a lesser player, it would be like steve wynn walking out of his villa on the golf course and yelling at a baccarat player for playing bad and at a disadvantage.
smile, laugh, say nice hand, and quit being focused on todays results.
First (and only) time I ever played live poker there was a guy at my table who thought he was gods gift to poker. He was probably the 2nd best player at table but he kept commenting on how other people were playing their hand out loud. Since it was a soft table pretty much everyone was butchering their hand. He criticized the guy next to me for playing his hand terribly. I did tell him to shut up a few times, but I was in seat 3 and he was in seat 8 otherwise I would of challenged him to HU4rollz, =). People like him are so bad for the game and create an unfriendly atmosphere for weaker players. I think it’s important to put players like this in line. This post seems to hold a lot more merit for live poker players. No reason to educate the fish or be a complete jackass.
I was just playing at the Wynn like 2 days ago and there was this massive fish who was playing like 90/40 style and dumped about 15k in cash over a couple of hours. Everytime he sucked out in some big pot he kept getting berated by some players. Luckily, the 90/40 spoke ZERO english and didnt understand a single word being said. I took it upon myself to slightly berate the antagonists and give the fish fistpounds whenever they'd suck out. Fistpounds are universal in language. I think my new policy will be to issue fistpounds to fish who are being berated after they win a big pot and antagonize the beraters. I hope I don't get shot.
Berating is bad enough, probably is profitable in specific situations, but unprofitable in most and net unprofitable. Making fun of someone with other good players in chat when he might read it is worse, but maybe it could fall under the same argument that you want to make the tilty fish angry.
Telling someone how they should have played a hand, or talking strategy to show how smart you are, or explaining why you did what you did, is ****ing idiotic under all circumstances.
Instead of not berating bad players in order to keep them happy/gambling, how about not berating bad players in order to not be an *******.
For people who berate the fish, their problem isn't that they fail to control their impulses and end up embarrassing or driving away a bad player. Their problem is that they have the impulse to run their mouth in the first place (and that's a symptom of a much larger problem that goes way beyond poker IMO).

A friend directed me to your website. I would just like to say that I haven't experienced any real malicious treatment at the tables, and I'm a self-admitted novice to the game of poker. I'm not in need of any gambler's anonymous classes as I'm doing pretty fine for myself, and now that I've come across your website, I hope to improve my game so I can make a run at this year's WSOP!
You guys like to argue a lot! Its just poker! With my new coach I'll be getting soon, I can't wait to whip all your butts!
I was here for this previous week to attend the WPT boot camp with Mike Matusow and other pros. My wife and I are actually leaving for Toronto within the hour. Sorry, I won't be able to meet anyone this week, but I will be in Las Vegas for a lot of the WSOP.
This whole thread is kind of dated. In the next Golden Age of Online Poker, all of the donks will be Russian, and they won't chat and probably won't even speak English. They will have no clue they're even being berated, and they'll keep coming back for more. Think about how many players there already are like this, and just imagine how things will be if the increase in Russian interest in poker continues as it has. Russia is a big country, and it has many uberdonks yet to give us.
its actually a thin line, you don't want to be too friendly with the fish to the point that they don't want to play hard vs you and are content to soft play when in heads up pots with you.
i had a situation where we were playing 4 handed 50/100 and there was uber mega rich fish in the game.
we were super deep and i was stuck, but i was being nice to the kid (he was mid 20's) and we get HU in a raised pot.
i have 66 and call his raise OOP.
flop is T66.
i check he chks.
turn is some brick i bet he calls.
river is another brick i lead for pot (keep in mind we are like 40Kish deep and this guy has been just donking off massive amounts of money with like 2nd pair) and the dude looks at me and says "you know what bro, you're stuck and i like you and since you've been so nice ima do you a favor....i just call"
as he tables TT.
i've never been on such raging tilt from winning a pot in my life.
and no joke he proceeded to lose his 40K stack 3 hands later with AQ on a Qxx board in an unraised pot................,
I can't imagine the +EV from tilting the random person or two is really +EV in light of giving yourself a heart attack and/or other stress related illness from being a bitter and angry person over a long period of time.
Being a good guy really isn't that overrated is it? :/

Alot of Russians are psycho lags and pretty tough, also they have produced armies of shortstackers. Also they prefer to play PLO and limit split games.
