Is it all about the money?

I keep seeing the same traits in us successful internet poker players. Most of us are very intelligent, but "lazy" and mostly apathetic. If we find a topic that interests us, we can be extremely motivated to learn a lot about it and be successful in it, but soon afterwards, it becomes boring again.

Poker isn't enough to satisfy us. I've been playing for 4-5 years now and after the first 2 years, I began to hate it. Learning a new game is fun for a little, but it all goes back to the same old grind. It's not intellectually satisfying. People like us need constant intellectual stimulation - new exciting things.

So, everyone here says after you make a lot of money - go into stocks or real estate. Make even more money! That will satisfy you. That will make you happy.

For the guys who are new to this, newly rich, newly successful - the happiness from money only lasts so long. The emptiness will soon return. Making boatloads of money isn't going to solve that. Going into businesses purely for the sake of making more money is a mistake.

Do you want to look back at your life in 30 years and see the mountains of cash and say "I'm rich bitch?" Money isn't an accomplishment. You haven't done anything. You haven't created anything. You haven't solved anything. It will never make you happy.

I'm going into research. I love math. I love science. I want to learn more about it and discover new things. I want to be the guy working on the LHC, trying to figure out what the universe is made of. I want to be the guy who finally makes quantum computers. I have a feeling most of you are the same, but have been exposed to it in the wrong ways.

I also am very interested in math, science, philosophy, psychology and the universe. Unfortunately there are 3 things holding me back in no particular order:

1. Money
2. Laziness
3. I'm not as smart as people in those fields

So yeah, we're basically all the same

I'm not an high stakes player, neither am I rich but your post refers exactly to something psychologist call hedonic adaptation meaning individuals tend to accustom themselves to both positive and negative circumstances, long-term changes in happiness level are prohibited...Search about the subject, it's interesting!

But for every few hours of happiness I've had around you, I've had 2 days of hangover.

Re: Is it all about the money?

money can buy time and time can buy money. The rate at which each buys the other is not constant across people, but that's ok, neither is the value people place on either.

I've thought about this a lot by myself. If happiness always regresses to the mean, then doesn't the active act of trying to achieve happiness become pretty pointless? The thought always makes me kinda apathetic, but I can't really escape it.

This ofcourse only works when you have your basic needs already covered, so I guess my life goal as it relates to poker is to achieve financial independence and then just kinda mellow in it doing stuff I enjoy and trying to develope myself as a person. I don't really feel like I need to do anything special like change the world or become the best in the world in some specific craft to feel accomplished.

Also, I thought that what stoxtrader said is a pretty awesome quote material.
