I have been sick all week and have been getting Netflix recommendations on Facebook and figured we could use a thread for this in TWSS since I have discovered what a cavernous, addicting animal Netflix is, especially when used with AppleTV!

I watched 'The Rape of Europa' today which was really good and a must watch imo.
I have started Breaking Bad and also plan to start Friday Night Lights from the beginning!
I also watched Don't Look Back, a French film with one of my fav actresses. If you can stand subtitles, I would also recommend this.

Would love for this thread to be an ongoing recommendation list for the ladies!

Rent, Latter Days, Milk, boys dont cry, for the bible tells me so, love and other drugs, pleasantville, wimbledon, firefly, walking dead, jericho, weeds, A Knight's Tale...etc

i could go on and on.

Would have to say that my favorite tv show of all time is "The West Wing", if you have yet to see it you are really missing out. Also Rent is a must must see (has much of the broadway cast in it).

OMG just watched one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. The story, the characters and especially the cinematography!!!
I Am Love is an Italian film with Tilda Swinton (love her) and I know I said the other one I saw today was a must watch but this one is REALLY a must watch!!!

We're on the first season of Friday Night Lights and like it a lot. For some reason we never catch TV series the first time around and wind up getting them on Netflix. I didn't even start on Buffy the Vampire Slayer until it was over, now I make sure to catch anything by Joss Whedon right away. Firefly and Serenity are both available streaming.

We've also become addicted to Battlestar Galactica (the newer one), finally up to season 3 on that. I want to be Starbuck when I grow up.

If you like foreign films, check out some of Pedro Almodovar's work, like Bad Education, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, or All About My Mother.

An Irish film that I think is way overlooked is Neil Jordan's Breakfast on Pluto. I really liked it, and the music is great.

What kind of films/series are you looking for?

Shauna

Good to hear about another Almodovar fan. If he were the only filmaker I could watch forever I wouldn't mind one bit.

As a foreign film lover I have to recommend Lust/Caution, that movie is an absolute fav.

"Made in Spain" is a PBS series hosted by Jose Andres. Part cooking show, part travelogue

Then for the Netflix suggestion, I'd be sure to add Arron Sorkin's other shows to the queue, Sports Night (where we got the name of my cat Pixley) and Studio 60.

Studio 60 started off great, got lost in the tall grass and then really hit it home in the last couple of episodes, and "The Giants Win the Pennant" from Sports Night is one masterful piece of storytelling.

I'd also second Shauna's comments about Firefly and anything Joss Whedon does. Buffy, Angel and The Dollhouse are all worth checking out. And I'll admit to loving Castle (not on Netflix) for all the Firefly references they keep throwing in.

Definitely recommend Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I Spike).

Also recommend the Tudors (Jonathan Rhys Myers is a delight to women and alternative male viewers alike), a documentary series on military training (either Surviving or Making the Cut, I can't recall which right now and I'm lazy), Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Family Guy, and A&E series like Intervention and Hoarders.

IDK why, but I find watching mentally ill people struggle to make a breakthrough oddly compelling and uplifting.

Except when they show animals that get caught up in hoarding, and then I become very sad and I pet my cat and assure him that I will never allow him to become buried under piles of trash.

Huge +1 for Sports Night! Great writing, great cast. I watched it when it was on air, then bought the box set, then watched it again (recently) on Netflix. So few shows where most of the cast continued to have great TV careers, but this is one of them.

(Also, you can never have too much Peter Krause.)

I can watch the scene with Robert Guillaume at the end of season 1 on a loop and never get tired of it.

If you like cartoons and offbeat humor, I'd recommend checking out "Ugly Americans", which I find pretty funny. There's a season on Netflix, and you can watch most of Season 2 for free online if you poke around a little.

Season 3 starts next month on Comedy Central, so if you enjoy it you can see new eps soon.

Apparently not. I found it by chance once after watching South Park and it grabs you right out of the gate, IMO. I think it's one of those shows you'll either love or hate, but there's not going to be a ton of middle ground.

Frankly I don't see how you can't think that a pansy-ass social worker trying to integrate monsters in NYC while living with a zombie and dating a human/demon hybrid isn't pretty ****ing funny.

OMG. Just started watching that show this week. Got through 4 eps in one night and polished off season 1 the next.

Sooooo good!

(Warning: Do not read IMDB for the show, it will give away some stuff. I made the mistake of wanting to see what else the cast had been in, and now I'm bummed that I know stuff that happens in episodes I haven't seen yet.)
