Especially those who still aren't sure about Low Carb lifestyles...

The guy that made the documentary also runs a blog: http://www.fathead-movie.com/

Another great LC blog is: http://yourlighterside.com/ with loads of great recipes.
Thanks for sharing this, I somehow missed it before!

No problem

I have to admit though that I'm not following the low carb lifestyle any longer
It's just really difficult to stay on. Argh!
The documentary I mentioned still has some very good points though and is definitely worth watching!

I am now using the "MyFitnessPal" App on the iPhone and I absolutely love it. Anyone else know of it/using it? It's basically a way of logging your calorie intake, exercises, etc on a daily basis. You can even scan barcodes and it will add the calories. Really handy

Yes, it's a brilliant app!

Don't know where you live, but here in the UK, you can scan bar codes. Not every single product is recognized, but most of them, which is really handy.

Personal update: I've been pretty carb free since about mid-august now (I do have one square of 4 carb dark chocolate every night, and have had 3 carby meals in that time) and feel great. I also feel a lot happier than I did-- which makes more sense after watching "Fat Head." I'm also not trying to lose weight anymore, which is a nice feeling, I'm continuing this because my research has convinced me it's healthy, and I want to live long enough to 4-bet people light when I'm 90.

I also gave up diet soda about 2 months ago, and the shocking thing about all my radical changes has been that that was the easiest part of all this. I do drink more coffee (obv w/o sugar or sugar sub), but I realized the diet soda thing was more a habit than something I actually enjoyed. I drink way more water now since I'm not filling my stomach with diet soda anymore!

The thing I hate the most about doing this is having to be an annoying diner when I go out to eat (asking for substitutions, confusing waiters in Mexico by neglecting to eat their homemade tortillas, ordering tortilla soup without the tortillas lol). But for how I feel, the sacrifices are worth it. Occasionally I really crave pizza, but the good thing is that I really savor my indulgences by planning them way in advance (very excited for pizza splurge on Tuesday lol).

I've found ways to feel like I'm eating carbs without eating a ton of them, like roasting and pureeing cauliflower (I really almost prefer that to mashed potatoes).

I never really thought I could do this; but the hardest part was the first couple weeks. I used to eat a lot of carbs (mostly in the form of bread and quinoa).

I know some people disagree with a low-carb lifestyle, but ty for all the support in this thread!

To be honest, the main reason I switched back to counting calories again, is because I simply didn't lose weight this time around on the low carb lifestyle. (I was on the Atkins once and lost quite a bit, but fell back into old habits and gained everything back).

So after watching "Fat Head", I went back on low carb for about 2-3 weeks, but I didn't lose anything this time. So I kind of thought to myself, why do I have to go through this if I don't see any results. (I have to admit that I went a bit overboard with cream, cheese and Atkins chocolate bars )

Also, I kind of thought about the documentary again and felt that at the end the reason he did lose, is because he was under a certain calorie amount for the day. And in essence, I believe that any low carb lifestyle is actually working because of eating less calories.
And that's also exactly the reason why I didn't lose this time, because I had way too many calories for each day.

I know that carbs aren't healthy, but I want to see results. I really want to lose about 10kg, and right now, the low calorie works better than the low carb.

But I might go back to low carb once I reached my goalweight as I know it's healthier in the long run.

Oh, and I also love mashed cauliflower! Yum!

Thank you! You too

Do you actually follow anything specific (Atkins or similar) or do you just watch your carb intake? How many grams a day if I may ask?

I don't eat any bread, pasta, potatoes, fruit, alcohol, unless it's a pre determined splurge (about every couple weeks). The one daily indulgence is a square of chocolate that's 5 carbs. I eat a small handful of nuts every day, and I still eat vegetables. I would guess I average about 25ish grams a day.

Joe and I are both still very happy with the changes we have made to our eating habits. We have both lost about 10 pounds - and are happy to maintain that for the rest of the year. In January we will tighten up and go for losing another 5-8 pounds before we go to Europe.

It has changed my life in such a positive way. We feel like we get plenty to eat and the variety is very good. I have managed to maintain my loss through a 10 day Vegas trip and Thanksgiving. I had a few cheat meals in Vegas and drank a small bit of alcohol.

It is so nice to be able to have an occasional meal that is outside the norm and not be punished for it lol. I also love not counting calories anymore. I did count the calories for the 1st 21 days - but after that you have a very good idea of portions and snacks so there is no need for it.

And here is the shocking part - there are days I don't remember to weigh myself now. I weighed today for the 1st time in 4 days - and my weight was the same as the last time I weighed despite Thanksgiving and eating a burger and fries on Friday. For the 1st time in my adult life I can trust what I am eating and don't have to panic about my weight on a daily basis. (My panic was justified previously lol).

I saw Katie in Vegas and she looked fantastic!!

Aw, thanks! And back at ya!!! So glad that you've found something that you both enjoy.

One high point of losing weight so far has been scoring the last pair of 7 For All Mankind jeans for $35 on black Friday (originally $179) in a size that never would have fit me before!

Yayyyy Katie! The only drawback of getting in shape is shopping too much! When I'm gross, I spend $0 on new clothes, lol

Been a while since we've had a post in this thread! With the 2 year mark in sight, I'm still following the same eating plan that I talked about earlier, and I think it's safe to say at this point that I plan to eat this way for life. I even have a fancier name for it now-- a ketogenic diet.

I thought of this thread because of the new cover article of Time magazine "Ending the War on Fat" by Bryan Walsh. I think this is a good primer/summary for so many of the books that I've read about this.

Having grown up in a house where I begged for those weird fat-free potato chips (which I think were later removed from shelves for-- no surprise-- being horrible for people) it was tough at first to wrap my head around the fact that the food pyramid was wrong.

Probably the worst part about eating this way is being annoying when ordering at restaurants (oh, can I please have that burger wrapped in lettuce, with buttered broccoli instead of fries), but since I love cooking a home this isn't a huge deal. And the positive benefits are that it has made my life better in so many ways!

If anyone is looking to try this/ has any questions I would love to be of help!

Oh my gosh how exciting! I didn't know this thread existed! I've just started back at the gym full time, watch this space!

I had a knee injury last year which took me off my feet for aaaages and subsequently I gained a tonne of weight (I will admit to possibly eating too many chippies as well ). I'm really enjoying being active again. My mood and energy levels are soaring already. Its working in well with poker as well, with my sessions finishing roughly around midday for me then I hit the gym early afternoon (often earlier at the moment if I run **** & quit for the day to take my frustration out on my fat hahaha).

@Katie, just read up on a keto diet! Sounds ideal for weight loss. I think I will look into it further when I get to the cutting stage. I typically eat a very paleo diet with the only exceptions being my protein powder and my cawfee. Not quitting cawfee ever lol.

Here are a few crazeeash #Gelfies, I will post progress updates for ya'll when I weigh in on the 1st!

timely thread bump by Katie, as I have a question. anyone tried one of those 3 day juice cleanses? I've thought about it, but part of me thinks it might be a bunch of BS, while the other part thinks it might be a nice kickstart.

anyone have any stories/thoughts?

I think there is definitely a lot of merit to starting a new diet/lifestyle with a detox to give your belly a good clean out! I normally just do roughly 5 daysish strictly paleo with nothing processed or sprayed etc but I think I have a juice cleanse tucked away in the corners of my hotmail account, I can try find it for you if you like?

that would be great. I've seen a few different ones, but have no idea which would be the best/easiest/most accessible.

Thanks!
