Jen Shahade responded to one of my tweets and said, "Maybe we need a #TWSS fitness thread to offset the baking one? Pix of what we're lifting, etc. TWSS can become the perfect place for booking weight loss/gym frequency prop bets!"

With cool weather months quickly approaching, this is the time where most of us women start feeling "to fat"... even moreso than usual. So ITT, we don't judge, keep complaints to a minimum, focus on turning negatives into positives, and accomplish our fitness/well-being goals.

No more of this:

Me likey

I'm in the forces and I play cricket for the ladies and combined services squad. I smoke and did drink quite a lot and realised last year that I wasn't really fit enough to keep my place, but, I did, because I'm the opening bowler.

I'd never run more than 5k, but decided to get into running, with the aim of running the Boston marathon by the time I'm 35 (29 now, just). Also, I want to give up the ciggies by the time I turn 30 (Nov). Hardly ever drink now, only a few times a year.

These days, I run 3 times a week and do circuits/toning weights twice a week and I love it. I dont eat badly, but I dont watch what I eat, but eat plenty of veg and stuff. Will put some recipes up in due course.

Looking forward to this thread! Current best 5k time = 28 mins (would be much better without the ciggies) . Doing another 12 week 5k training programme at the moment and then will start 10ks and so on.

For any UK dwellers here who like running, TeamTrousers introduced me to parkrun.org - free 5ks all over the country every Sat morning!

Personally, I have 2 2-hour racquetball sessions a week (I this sport-- like tennis on steroids and I have finally gotten to the point where I am 99% as good as Collin), and one weight-lifting day (dead-lifts, bench, etc. but I have pink gloves obv.)

Then of course we spend about an hour walking Wilbur every day. Once a week or so we take him running instead, but I'm a sprinter to the core, and do not enjoy long-distance running, tbh (wish I did, but I'd rather be playing a sport). Even so, running in the dry heat of Vegas is so much more pleasant than when I was back East!

In terms of eating more healthfully, I've found that spending time on making a yummy/interesting veggie side encourages me to think of that as the main course, and generally I think in terms of getting to eat as much as I want of the low-cal veggie dish and then limit the real main item. I try to make it a goal to eat as many different fruits and veggies in one day as possible, and focus on that instead of counting calories.

Thanks for starting this thread, Beata! Hopefully it will encourage me to be healthy in the way that the baking thread makes me want to bake lol.

A relatively quick, easy, healthy dinner - chili (vegetarian or not).

Step 1: In a large pot, brown one pound ground beef (or other ground meat) along with any of the following you like: onion(s), peppers (green, red, yellow; poblano or anaheim for heat, you can go spicier if you want but I'm a wuss), celery, garlic. There's probably more veggies that would taste okay in there. If going meatless, throw in a touch of olive oil while sweating veggies.

Step 2: Once your meat/veggies mixture is cooked through, turn heat to low and add the following: a large can of tomato sauce, and 3-4 cans of beans (mix and match for fun - black beans, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, navy beans, white beans, roman beans, ad nauseam) and a can of corn. Add one cup of water.

Step 3: Add as much or as little of the following as you prefer: chili powder, tabasco sauce, black pepper, salt.

Simmer at least one hour (the longer it simmers, the more the flavors marry) and enjoy. High fiber, big enough to feed a family of four or provide healthy lunch leftovers. One of the great things about chili is you can experiment and pick the beans/veggie/spice combination that you prefer.

If I get my lazy ass in gear, I'll try to set up some sort of exercise schedule and try to get you guys to motivate me.

Hi Aston (and all other TWSSers too obv )

Been lurking TWSS for the last few days, to a large extent for the fantastic baking thread which I happily stumbled across while banhammering a cross-forum spammer the other day Anyway, I'm now using that thread for ideas and inspiration in the kitchen. Having been name-dropped ITT, I think I'll join in the TWSS fun. I'll also post TR and photos of the next batch of baked goodies. Apologies in advance for what will doubtless be terribly bad photos.

Anyway, Aston, glad to see you're enjoying parkrun, and good luck on your goal of completing the Boston Marathon. When we chatted on skype I think I'd just completed the Brighton marathon, probably my first organised race in about 15 years.

Since then, perhaps partly because I'm also keen on baking as well as running, I seem to have found myself as the token man in a group of half a dozen other social runners, all women who blog about food and running, and together we've done a few half marathons now, including on Sunday the Royal Parks Half around Central London and Hyde Park. Was a lovely flat route past many of the sights of London, and I think something like 12k runners, with tens of thousands more lining the route and cheering you on, which makes for a fantastic atmosphere. Unless you're up the front and a super-fit world class athlete competing for the medals, these big organised races are not about being first; the only real competition is between yourself and the finish line. They're all about having great fun, being friendly and social, and getting a bit of exercise while doing so. And after pounding across 13.1 miles of London pavement, a fun day saw us rounding everything off nicely by rewarding ourselves with huge calorie-free pizzas and lots of calorie-free beer

So, for those of you who are new to fitness, or returning to it, I'd say that running (or walking/jogging to start off with) is one of the best ways to start, because, as a species, running is what we evolved to excel at, so it'll build up really easily once you get started. And organised races are about having a great time with loads of really nice people, and the opportunity of meeting loads more really nice people.

Can confirm cricket is also awesome I don't know what cricket may be around Vegas, but a quick google throws up some results. I would have been very surprised if there wasn't something somewhere; cricket is played all over the US, and the US is an associate member of the ICC. Unfortunately though the USA Cricket Association website seems virtually useless, a sad reflection of the organisation itself, so you'll probably have to rely on other online resources to find something. GL!

Hardcore is an interesting term :P I'm not the best batter, so, provided the rest of the team do good, I can sit and enjoy the sun...oh wait, I'm in the UK, the rain and drink lots of tea. Obviously when we are fielding I have to be pretty switched on. I have many friends in the US and, explaining cricket is very difficult!

SRJ - I was going to throw some training plans up too! Great! Ranging from beginner to more advanced, but, I will do this on my return. Nice recipe btw - will have to try.

Try chucking in a square or two of a quality dark chocolate, 70-75% min. Just adds a certain something to the flavour imo

I like adding a bit off cocoa powder to sweated veg in much the same way.

Interesting idea! I just made chili tonight, but next time I'm throwing beans in the grocery cart I'll try to find some chocolate as well.

As for working out...sigh. I used to be, if not in great shape, at least in very good shape. I've never enjoyed running, but once I had gotten through basic I was okay at it - I never loved to do it, but I didn't struggle with it either, even when I sprained one of the ligaments in my knee (my built in weather barometer).

All that changed when I started having problems with my back, though. I never know if doing ANYTHING (including standing up) is going to throw something out of whack. It's frustrating as hell. Throw in the fact that a) I'm no longer in the Army, so there's no formations and mandatory PT and b) I'm inherently pretty lazy, and you have a recipe for flabbiness.

I've been eating much healthier, but I do need to add some PT in there, even if it's only walking and light weight training. Motivate me, girls (and guys)!

Cool thread and timely for me, been just starting to try and shake the rust (an a few pounds) off.

I've been very out of shape for a while now, and finally got motivated to start taking care of myself more. A few health issues over the last couple years helped kick start me.

Currently I'm doing the slow-carb diet from Tim Ferriss's 4 hour body book and it feels pretty good. My starting point was 39.7% bodyfat, so pretty much anything is going to be an improvement, I'll let you know how it goes. I think that 22-25% is a realistic goal, but it's going to take some time and effort.

Denise and I have been wanting to work out together, but could never seem to find the right time for both of us. We finally resorted to 05:30 AM so that she can finish and get ready for work on time. Thank goodness for gentle SoCal weather, it's not nearly as hard to do that here as it was to try and arise at 0-way-too-early-in-the-morning in the much colder Bay. Also the right music helps, I currently have the pod set to Tribute to Troy at full blast which seems to do the trick.

Keeping the exercise simple for now, trying not to put too much pressure on the joints until I'm a least a bit lighter. Just a lot of walking with some crunches, pushups and the like. I'm shopping this week for a kettlebell to do some swings with. Hopefully I'll get a bit more ambitious soon and check out some of the local swimming pools.

I wish I loved swimming. I used to really into it in high school, but now I get so bored with no music, looking at the bottom on the pool and then there's the whole itchy skin and wet hair thing.

Haven't been around the last week but thx for starting this thread! Right now I'm in the middle of my tennis league's fall season but once it ends in Nov I'm looking to really start up with my strength training - unfortunately in the past tennis + weights led to tendonitis for me, but the offseason will be pretty long so the timing should be perfect. Would love to hear what everyone else is doing!

PS Alligator - I find that my appetite goes crazy when I work out more so you do have to be careful of what you eat, too! Also I don't know what you were doing for workouts but strength training>>>cardio if you only have the time for one.

just wanted to say today i ran for 33 minutes straight (my second personal best), and completed a 5k in about ~31 minutes. really happy with myself. the feeling when you accomplish something is motivation enough to keep at it, so whenever i'm feeling down i'm just going to remind myself of this (and these kinds of) moment(s).
