I'd never run more than 5k, but decided to get into running, with the aim of running the Boston marathon by the time I'm 35 (29 now, just). Also, I want to give up the ciggies by the time I turn 30 (Nov). Hardly ever drink now, only a few times a year.
These days, I run 3 times a week and do circuits/toning weights twice a week and I love it. I dont eat badly, but I dont watch what I eat, but eat plenty of veg and stuff. Will put some recipes up in due course.
Looking forward to this thread! Current best 5k time = 28 mins (would be much better without the ciggies) . Doing another 12 week 5k training programme at the moment and then will start 10ks and so on.
For any UK dwellers here who like running, TeamTrousers introduced me to parkrun.org - free 5ks all over the country every Sat morning!
Hi Aston (and all other TWSSers too obv
)
Been lurking TWSS for the last few days, to a large extent for the fantastic baking thread which I happily stumbled across while banhammering a cross-forum spammer the other day
Anyway, I'm now using that thread for ideas and inspiration in the kitchen. Having been name-dropped ITT, I think I'll join in the TWSS fun. I'll also post TR and photos of the next batch of baked goodies.
Apologies in advance for what will doubtless be terribly bad photos.
Anyway, Aston, glad to see you're enjoying parkrun, and good luck on your goal of completing the Boston Marathon. When we chatted on skype I think I'd just completed the Brighton marathon, probably my first organised race in about 15 years.
Since then, perhaps partly because I'm also keen on baking as well as running, I seem to have found myself as the token man in a group of half a dozen other social runners, all women who blog about food and running, and together we've done a few half marathons now, including on Sunday the Royal Parks Half around Central London and Hyde Park. Was a lovely flat route past many of the sights of London, and I think something like 12k runners, with tens of thousands more lining the route and cheering you on, which makes for a fantastic atmosphere. Unless you're up the front and a super-fit world class athlete competing for the medals, these big organised races are not about being first; the only real competition is between yourself and the finish line. They're all about having great fun, being friendly and social, and getting a bit of exercise while doing so. And after pounding across 13.1 miles of London pavement, a fun day saw us rounding everything off nicely by rewarding ourselves with huge calorie-free pizzas and lots of calorie-free beer
So, for those of you who are new to fitness, or returning to it, I'd say that running (or walking/jogging to start off with) is one of the best ways to start, because, as a species, running is what we evolved to excel at, so it'll build up really easily once you get started. And organised races are about having a great time with loads of really nice people, and the opportunity of meeting loads more really nice people.

Can confirm cricket is also awesome
I don't know what cricket may be around Vegas, but a quick google throws up some results. I would have been very surprised if there wasn't something somewhere; cricket is played all over the US, and the US is an associate member of the ICC. Unfortunately though the USA Cricket Association website seems virtually useless, a sad reflection of the organisation itself, so you'll probably have to rely on other online resources to find something.
