Oh, no, there was so much more fodder for their mocking. If they teased me for anything I couldn't help, it was my height, not my voice.

I get confused for a guy on the phone consistently, so yes I'm aware my voice is on the low end. Not much I can do about it.

Nice! And the state's voters are probably liberal enough to uphold the law when it will get put to a referendum.

I'm sure there are plenty of occurrences of this sort that go by unnoticed (by me), but I'm wondering if this is something that GLBT folks are bothered by a lot or if it's something that kinda slides off the back (not to say that it isn't troubling, but that it doesn't sink one into a major funk).

The only way that I can try to equivocate the feeling is to think of how often I hear something that's disparaging or presumptive regarding women or Asians and how that impacts me. While I've gotten "used to" idiotic assumptions about sex / race, I feel that I am a bit more sensitive when it comes to idiotic assumptions about sexual orientation.

Not really sure why that is.

Just throwing it out there because it's been on my mind since Saturday.
I'm sorry to just now be seeing this! Last time I tucked into this thread, it only had a couple pages. It's grown! So awesome.

Just wanted to comment on your post, CK, b/c you (as always! I love it!) raise some interesting points.

Personally, at this point in my life, I don't slide into a funk at not being able to snog the hell out of my belle during sports events. Honestly, it barely even registers anymore. When I was first coming out (waaaay back in the prehistoric era of the 90's), it would've totally been on my mind and pissed me off and hurt my feelings. As you note, and others point out in other responses, there are just on average way more straight people in attendance and so sweet, straight smooches are what we're gonna see. It's so nice, though, that people are even thinking about it, as you did that day! That's awesome.

That said, it's also not always safe for gay people to kiss in situations like that. Here in Texas, say at a Spurs basketball game for example, I would imagine that two feminine women kissing quickly for a "Kiss Cam" would be met with cheers and hoots of "appreciation." That kind of response would not be the same for two guys (or two really butch girls, I'd venture, sadly, to guess). Indeed, I'd bet a million bucks there would be complaints about such games being a "family" setting, etc, etc...Boochit all around, I say.

Thinking on this, though, led me to recall a recent situation involving former L Word actress, Leisha Hailey, and her incident of being KICKED OFF A SOUTHWEST AIRLINES FLIGHT for kissing her girlfriend (you can read about it on Dorothy Snarker's Blog, and - for those interested - if you're a card carrying lesbo (like me!) and you're not checking her blog out on the reg and following her on Twitter, you cray cray...but that's beside the point...)

All that to say, I guess, that the older I get, the more I just am...me. I'm gay. But I'm also a mom and a lawyer and a Call of Duty fanatic and a sister, daughter, geek. I totally want to mug down on my belle when and if the "Kissing Cam" next comes my way, but in the grand scheme of things, I'd much prefer that little license, entitled "Certificate of Marriage," that would afford us the same rights, privileges, and benefits (as well as all the obligations!) from the state, that my brother and his wife currently enjoy. Not even, necessarily because I want to "be married" (which, all my life, has just never been a real possibility, but which our daughter might surely appreciate), but because it is the right thing to do. In the end, I guess it's the same for the Kissing Cam? Inclusive Kissing Cams FTW!

I'm glad I dropped back in to see what's been going on 'round here. You guys some awesome folk.

Over and out for now...

re: **Rainbow Flops: The GLBTQ Discussion Thread**

All this talk of the decision out of California re Prop 8 and marriage made me think about what I wrote on my FB page yesterday:

Quote:
You may have heard me in the past talk about a case decided by the Supreme Court in 1954 (Brown v Board of Ed). I think about that case a lot because I often wonder what would have happened in our country over the past 58 years if the civil rights issue therein, race and education, had been put to popular vote.

That's exactly what Prop 8 and its ilk are - a putting to the public (the majority) a vote with respect to a civil rights issue (marriage) of a minority (gays).

I've been with my partner for more than a decade. We have a child. We are contributing members of society and this country. We also make a really mean pico de gallo.

Whether you, personally, believe that I should have the right to marry her (and share in the more than 1000 rights, benefits, and privileges this country affords people who are able to marry), is 100% irrelevant in the face of this country's constitution, particularly the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment. Just as, back in 1954 America (when Brown v Board of Ed was decided) and 1967 America (when Loving v Virginia was decided) the opinion of those folks was 100% irrelevant in the face of the Constitution and what's right.

I'd encourage you to read these cases, better yet - go back and look at the Constitution. And be reminded what a beautiful, living document it is. And if you're so inclined (and in San Antonio), come see us one weekend - we make really good ribs, too.

Cliffs:
Brown v. Board of Ed ("separate but equal" in the context of public education is inherently unconstitutional) or Loving v. Virginia ("Marriage is one of the "basic civil rights of man," fundamental to our very existence and survival. To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications..., classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State's citizens of liberty without due process of law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discriminations. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual, and cannot be infringed by the State.")
The whole issue of putting civil rights issue to public referendum is best refuted by this guy (NJ Mayor Cory Booker) here.

Oh and the 9th amendment helps too, wiki article on lawrence v texas points that out. Enumerated rights in the Constitution is not an exhaustive list.

Reading a brief summary of Kennedy's opinion for lawrence v texas doesn't make me immediately think that he will vote the same way for gay marriage. But he's the only one of the group that might break rank for this issue; that's a near certainty.

This is an example of sexual orientation as a master status - what that means is that, to others, your sexual orientation is the most important thing about you. While you think of yourself in many different terms and with dozens of adjectives - lesbian being one of them, but one that doesn't necessarily have much bearing on certain issues or day to day activities - to others, you will always be gay first and everything else second. That's one of the reasons why you "flaunting" your "deviance" in front of the kiddies causes such strong reactions from bigoted idiots. You went from just a normal woman to one of "them" with a single kiss.

You forgot to add "poker player" to the list of your many fab qualities. The more that I've thought about this, the more I've realized that the reason that I don't get as bent out of shape about "woman" comments or "Asian" comments is that I do look at myself as much more than "woman" or "Asian." (Although the Jewish comments still bother me quite a bit . . .)

There's a different perspective, I guess, when you're an "outsider" to a group that's received disparate treatment in society. Sorta like a "I can handle my own crap, but damn you for being mean to [insert name of marginalized group here]."

Also, hooray for WA state! I wish they weren't as dumb about online poker, but I guess that's kinda irrelevant these days anyway.

Some1 posted on your blog that you should do an "it gets better" video jason, i actually think it would be really cool if we could get some of the other openly gay professionals to all work together and make a video. I know of at least 5 gay professionals, and im sure there are others that would show interest. Also we could possibly get some other high profile players to work together on it, and maybe even help raise some $$ for a good glbt youth fund or something.

Goddamnit JCarver! You know the spicy system was my first real exposure to poker strategy, you've been a huge poker inspiration to me, AND you're gay? What up cutie

Now that I've actually read the blog post... I'm sorry Jason, it seems like this whole experience has been pretty hard for you. I'm glad your parents have come around. I know its kind of ridiculous since we pretty much never talk, but I wish I could have been there for you. You're a great guy, you have always contributed a fantastic amount to the poker community, and this just continues that trend. Thanks.

I'm waiting to see if anyone in that thread who are complaining about my modding are actually going to start an ATF thread to protest my "censorship" of gay jokes.

That should be a good one.

"It's absolutely disgusting at how the mods on this site curtail freedom of speech. I had this totally awesome and completely original 'Danny Negraneu is GAY!' joke and it got deleted! WTF! Buch of Nazis!"
