So a question for cat owners with multiple cats..... We will be adopting a second kitten in the next 3-4 months because we understand it is not fair to Riley to be by himself(even though we spoil the hell out of him!) What should we expect when we bring in another kitten into the household?

I think a lot of it depends on age and temperament. Pixley is a Tortie so they are known for their attitude. She's yet to take to Slagathor and hisses and chases him and attacks him whenever we're not looking. He's a lover, not a fighter and doesn't do much but run from her if he can. We're hoping that changes once he gets bigger than she does (and at this rate it shouldn't take long).

She has gone through this once before (had a roommate with a cat move in about a year ago) but Cody was older, clearly belonged to our roommate and outweighed her by 13 lbs. So we're hoping time and familiarity is the solution.

I've watched just about every integration possible, including one where my mom seriously thought we'd have to get rid of the new cat because one of the old ones was beating the crap out of him.

Anyway, the key to integration is to let them go at their own pace. If there's no actual aggression, let them sniff and even hiss and prance around a bit. Two kittens, there is going to be some play fighting and maybe a touch worse, but as long as one of them isn't terrorizing the other one, eventually cats innate desire, particularly at a young age, to group together to play and groom will win out.

If one or both of them is highly aggressive, then sequester the new cat, only let them be together when supervised, and punish the aggressor by hissing and spraying with water when he oversteps his boundaries.

With two kittens I don't think it's too likely, though. They'll probably be best buddies in like 4 hours, tops.

Thanks girls! We were so thrilled with Riley we want to adopt another kitten for sure. Male seems the way to go also because I have had some issues with girl cats being so damn bi polar! Riley has been so amazing in soooooo many ways.

WRT getting a second cat, we had a rough adjustment initially. I was worried our older cat would beat up on the kitten, but it was actually the reverse. Poor Mr Ed endured a couple kitty bites that got infected and took a long time (and lots of care) to heal. Fortunately, they have adjusted well since. Hope your new kitten is less aggressive than mine was at first
