I was wondering if I could get your input, on the question: On online forums, should you correct or not correct guys when they assume your a man?
I guess because of my straight up style, almost always I get 'yo bro' or 'dude'
I was wondering, if you think there is an advantage to them treating you like one of the dudes, or is the social justice and right thing to do correct them because long term it reduces hetronormativity? I find when I reveal I'm a girl they kinda treat me a bit softer.
great to get your thoughts.
cheers
Hi Swishy!
Thanks for following. Unfortunately I haven't had time to update it in the last few weeks, because I am in the middle of a move across the ocean to Germany. Most of the stuff is done now and I should be able to play more poker now (yay, in Europe where I can play freely).
I would love to meet you too. I will sadly have to pass up this years' WSOP, because there is just too much stuff going on in my life and I can't justify paying 1000$ to go see friends if I *just* left the US. But there's always 2012...
On your question, I just wing it most of the time.
Often already the name "bellatrix" or "bella" suggests to them, that it is a female on the other side of the computer. But yeah, I get the "that bellatrix dude, he said..." plus there are some dudes taking on female names in online forums, too. But "swishy" could is not confined to a certain sex, so I can see how they would "sup bro" you.
Sometimes the forum corrects them. Sometimes I mention it with a smiley at the end, always understandable that in a community where there are mostly males you can assume a male participant as a default. It used to bug me in scientific papers and I always made sure to research the first author, so that I could give proper credit ("she discovered..."), but others are not so thorough. And sometimes I don't mention it, this is when I don't want to veer away from the discussion at hand and don't want to seem petty.
Anyway, yeah, not very good answer I gave, but then again, I don't have a formula how to deal with people in the forums and just do what comes to mind first
