So, I will be making the move to Vegas in the next few months in light of 4/15.

I would really like to get a sense from you Vegas-Resident-Ladies how you feel about particular areas (thank goodness it's not that big of a metropolitan area), pros/cons of those areas and things that I need to keep in mind being that I am now back to grinding live full time (traffic patterns coming from specific areas going towards the Strip, good shopping areas, safe neighborhoods/good schools, etc)

Thank in advance!!

Are you moving by yourself?

I live in NW by Centennial Hills and love it, but lots of people think it's really far away from everything. It only takes me 25 minutes to get to anywhere on the strip. I like being away from everything and near Mt. Charleston. I go up to ski a lot in the winter, so if that's not your thing, it might not matter as much to you.

Most people seem to live in the SW, like Mountain's Edge, or Summerlin. IMO, the traffic is way better from my side of town for that reason too, but most likely you won't be driving during rush hour since you have poker player hours.

Generally speaking, avoid the east side and NLV (Aliante is okay though.)

This is so helpful.
Many of the houses I am looking at are in the NW, but I am concerned about distance/traffic because it is a good 20 miles to the Strip and 2 highways...those are the legs I am worried about.

I would like to stay as close to Summerlin as possible, but it's a tad more expensive there.

Avoid East Side because it's older? Crime?

Yeah, I would have preferred Summerlin too, but up here you get so much more for your money (I bought a house) and the school districts are supposed to be pretty good; TBH, I don't know much about them because I don't have kids, but I hear people say it a lot.

I never hit traffic unless there is an accident....maybe because nobody lives up here?

And yeah, east side is older and dingier. There are crime maps you can look at that will give you an idea of what the different neighborhoods are like

i agree with pezbaby. we were in summerlin and loved it, but the commute to the strip is annoying. red rock is a nice alternative to the strip if you don't feel like driving too far.

we moved to southwest because we get more bang for our buck housing-wise (e.g., we were able to upgrade from a lux apartment to a house). also, the commute is half of what it was in summerlin. overall, i like it out here a lot.

i agree that the east side is to be avoided at all costs (excluding henderson). i'm not too keen on spring valley either, despite its proximity to the strip.

LOVE Red Rock. Def would prefer to be down the street from it!

Well there's a house down the street from me for sale.

I live in the northern part of Summerlin; just above the parkway. It is about 20 minutes w/o traffic to the strip, about 10 minutes from Red Rock. I love how well Summerlin is designed; I feel like I am 10 minutes from any store I really want to go to (well, except for the premium outlets which rock imo).

While there are advantages to being closer to the strip, I like that I can live in a comfy neighborhood and then head to the wild parts of town.

Haha. Well obv my proximity to you is a legitimate issue. No sarcasm.
We gotsta stick togetha.
It looks like I will for sure be on the Western side. North or South will be the issue. But most of the houses I am looking at are really close to that one that I sent to you. So, looks like we will in fact be neighbors

My house is in Southwest Ranch (northern part of Southwest) and is very close to the 215. 12 miles to the Strip. I rented in Summerlin before I bought my house and liked that neighborhood as well (although it's a bit pricier and was a longer commute to my job at that time).

A few of my friends live NW, and although the drive might be a bit longer, they really enjoy living there and felt that they got a lot of value for their money. I'm not sure how bad the 95 / I-15 interchange gets these days, but I remember from my Summerlin days that it could be somewhat of a nightmare. (I hate driving.)

Southern Highlands has some great properties, and parts of Henderson are nice as well.

Agree with other posters that East and Northeast are generally to be avoided.

PM me if you have Qs about any specific locations (i.e., already started looking online and have addresses).

Holy Cow I'm so glad I found these forums...my BF and I just moved to Vegas last summer. We both visited many times prior to that, and always wanted to move here, for so many reasons. We absolutely love it!

The one thing that bothers me (not much, but enough), is that I haven't really made any female friends here. I'm going to come right out and say that my BF and I both play poker because we love it, we want to make money at it, and ultimately not have to work "real" jobs. So, we devote a lot of time to the game.

He's made a few friends simply by meeting locals at the tables. My social life is a bit lacking (okay, a lot) because I meet so few women at the tables. The handful of times I've sat at a table with another woman and had a conversation, it turns out that they're a tourist and leaving eventually.

For those of you who didn't grow up in Vegas, and who play a lot, how do you meet/make female friends? Don't get me wrong, I've met a lot of nice guys, but they're not really interested in going to the spa or a day of shopping at the outlet malls. And I don't think the BF would approve, anyway lol.

Oh, yeah. We live just South of the Strip, right on Las Vegas Boulevard. Just a couple miles from Mandalay Bay, before South Point. And we LOVE it here!

I've been living here for 3 years, and I still have very few female friends. I met most of my friends through poker, so they're almost all guys. (Although I did meet my best girl friend playing $4/$8 mix at Red Rock ) The one thing that I do the most outside of poker is golf, so . . . yeah . . . all guys.

We were kicking around the idea of doing a TWSS mixer to coincide with the 2+2 party on July 7th. Any updates on that?

Oh yea, I have the 2p2 mixer on my calendar as tentatively being on July 7th, but is it confirmed?

aint no girl, obviously

but I have lived in the lakes loop for almost 10 years now and its the nuts. the resales are a bit older but you can get into a really nice place w/ fully mature landscaping and a decent (15 - 20 foot between the homes) lot line at bargain prices right now.

you can probably find a womans touch type fixeruper for around a buck thirty maybe less.

besides you can have some retired neighbors that will keep an eye on your place while your out and about AND you don't have to worry about someones snot nosed kids trenching your yard.

This is interesting that you mention this part, because I am in a discussion right now about house vs condo. I have lived in a house my entire life and am not entirely sure about a condo. The prices for the size of residence I want are not terribly different, so really trying to understand the differences/benefits of a condo over a house. One being, as you mentioned, safety and being able to lock up and GO for 3 months at a time. Which is def a scenario that happens frequently with me.

Glad you found these forums too! Whereabouts do you live? I'm in Summerlin, just north of the parkway. Things are going to be pretty crazy for me pre WSOP, and I'll be out of town for a week-- but we should meet up!

I'll check up on your house for you! I think safety is more going to be a concern based on the area than if you are in a condo vs house. Maybe check the crime reports for the area? We're in a gated community which I like (well except for when the gate refuses to open for me lol).

Also, if you need a real estate agent lmk.

At a condo you should be able to have a maintenance guy check up on your place every once in a while if you're out of town. Use those HOA fees.

Or, I would be willing to put on a blue jumpsuit, a name tag, and bring my mag light over to check on things!
Spoiler:
Though if there was actually a problem, I would have only a distant clue as to how to fix anything.

Personally I wouldnt buy a condo out here. simply because the construction on those places suck and you can get stuck in an endless litigation with the constructor HOA and other tenants because of it. Plus You are really just owning an apartment and have all the downside that comes with that.

with a Home you really got something including a bit of land and your own backyard. besides its your own F-in Castle and if you want to do the risky business dance in your undies you can GFI most any time.

with a home you can request courtesy drive bys' from metro. IF you develop friendships with your neighbors that is really a good thing. I would suggest you go out of your way to do this.

My next door neighbor is out of the country (he has a rocking place in Thailand) most of the year. I pick his mail and do a walk around every few days. Nothing has ever happened to his place besides a bunk H2O heater.

besides I moved from Grapevine TX where I had a condo out on the McPherson slew part of the lake to Vegas 13 years ago and it was one of the best moves (next to my risky business dance) I've ever made.

with home prices as they are I figure a home is a no brainer if you can land good financing.

Roy Cooke is my real estate broker. He and his wife Misty are A++++ folks in my book. even though one of the principals here had a misunderstanding with him on a deal many years back. I would recommend him any time.

Oh yeah bundt cakes are appreciated.... esp loaded ones. ::

One thing I've noticed is that neighbors aren't very neighborly around here.

They aren't mean, but you know, it's not like most cities where people have been living together for a long time. You really have to reach out. When I moved in, the people across the street brought over a tray of cupcakes and were all, "OMG, we're so glad you're cool. Nobody wants to be our friends around here!" which obviously made me uneasy at first, but they are just overly friendly Southerners. I'm glad we connected because they've made my life easier around here and knowing the nosy rednecks across the street have a gun makes me feel a little better.

I lived there for several years. I liked the Summerlin area the best. If you find a place with quick access to the 95 or the 215, it will work out good. Good luck!

I Live in spring valley right now if you dont mind housing from the 80's then its a good location, my place is about 3 miles from the strip. Otherwise summerlin is the next best place, i used to live there. drive is twice as long to the strip but its a really nice area and you have the red rock which has the best non strip poker room in my opinion right down the street.

henderson is nice to but to far from everything IMO, my mom lives there and i hate driving to it.

if i was playing poker fulltime no way would i want to drive more then 15 minutes to get to my place of play

Exactly how I feel.
Ok so summerlin is def best option. Kinda already knew that but very helpful to have it confirmed by several of you.
But also anything within 5 miles north or south of it works too prob.
And also stay within 5 min of 215 & 95.
All very good info. Tyty!

I'm def with u on th condo thing, Timmer. Good points.
I live about 30 min from Grapevine, btw.

I think this is largely a function of where you live; my neighbors have been nicer to me than anywhere I've ever lived, and the women even have a monthly gathering. It's true that most people are transplants, but I like that as it means a group that has a lot of different perspectives.
