Female here wondering if any other females are leaving the US to Play Online Poker? Female here wondering if any other females are leaving the US to Play Online Poker?

Not sure why my other thread was locked, I would like to meet other females who might be thinking of leaving the US to play online poker, or maybe someone who has already made the move.

I am curious about this as well. I have a full time job, so moving isn't really something I can consider, but I see the guys talking about it all the time on forums. Are women moving to play online? If so, are there additional concerns about personal safety, etc. with regards to the best places to relocate?

I have had some correspondence with Kristen at the Pocket Fives Refugees, not sure if she is a poker player, but she is living in Costa Rica near San Jose, she says it is generally safe if you get in a good area, but that you should be street smart. This seems to be true anywhere you go imo.

I was telling Kristen that I wanted to live near the beach, she mentioned that there is a lot of petty theft going on at the beaches in Costa Rica, so I am thinking maybe I should live in the city until I get settled, get used to life in Costa Rica etc.. I would love to be able to buy some beach property there someday.

I've thought about it many times, but no plans to ex-pat in my immediate future for now. GL ladies!

Thanks for the good wishes Jenny, I am going to put together a list of questions for Kristen over at Pocket Fives Refugees, and go from there. My initial plan was to be out of the states by January, I would like to go sooner but it is a hard decision with the holidays coming up and all and other things going on in my family. Also, I have this feeling that legalization is around the corner, although I personally don't think the new system will be to my liking.

If anyone knows of any other refugee services out there, let me know, the only services I am aware of is the one at Pocket Fives and this one Rounders Retreats.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do - but I sure would love it if you post the answers you get from Kristen (I ope I got her name right - I get real dyslexic sometimes)! I have a full-time job, but if I could swing a pad and maybe be there part-time...it's something to consider, but I need more info :-)

Thanks and good luck to you!

I'm playing on Merge since moving isn't really an option for me, husband has good job and my Mother is getting older.

I have thought about renting a small apartment just across the Canadian border and opening a bank account there so I could play on Stars. I figured I couldn't go up there more than once every other month for 2 to 3 weeks or so. I had wondered about sharing with 1 or 2 other ladies and alternating when we use the apartment, assuming a studio or 1 bedroom would be the most affordable. I would love to know if this is "legal" as far as Stars is concerned and how one would deal with it on the Canadian side and the US side. I'm pretty sure in Canada gambling winnings aren't taxed which would be a bonus since they would have to be counted on the US side.

Unfortunately I'd had just starting really making decent money on Stars so it's hard to justify doing this at this point. Had BF happened a few months later when I had made more consistent earnings it would much easier to do. I do think this would be a good solution for people who can't make a permanent move though. I would love to hear thoughts.

As for where, I'm hearing better things from those who've moved to Canada as far as internet connections, safety etc. I do know of one girl who moved to Toronto with her boyfriend and she plays too and she loves it. I know I would feel more comfortable in Canada than Central America but it's so cold there. :-)

Just stay in at night. My wives grand father lives there and it's a dangerous place in certain parts. Just gotta be careful

Starling, if you go through with this make sure you ask about living in Escazu. That is the safest place you could be in. Almost everyone speaks English and its more upscale. I was there alone last year and I had no safety issues whatsoever.

I have spent some time in Canada in the past, I personally don't care for the climate, the people are very nice though, If I decided to live there, I would choose British Columbia for its beauty and slightly milder climate from what I have been told.

Here is a good thread about moving and opening a bank account in Canada, it would answer most questions you and others may have about relocating there.

I have heard this, and I believe that is where Kristen from P5's is located, from what I have read, pretty much the touristy places are pretty safe, just need to be street smart like anywhere else. I have my heart set on living near the beach, and I hear Jaco is generally safe, I have been in communication with a few poker players who are living there and are very happy.

I just moved down here and have been living in my friend's place in Santa Ana (right next to Escazu). I have been down here before and can tell you it's a nice place to live. You are still pretty close to the beaches in Escazu/Santa Ana.

I can give you a review on Kristen later as I am having her show me properties on friday.

Also a lot of my friends down here are girls that I could introduce you to. (Yes I'm a guy, Jenny will vouch for me not being a creeper) My friend I am currently staying at is a women (strictly friends) and I met most of them because they work for a US facing site.

This is awesome! Good luck to you down there and keep me posted.

I think I know who you are, did you used to be room-mates with Chris, Joe and Drew in Vegas? I think you are the guy that was suppose to be on our CHORSE team at the Barge Convention lol.

Yes I was supposed to be on your team for the Barge convention. But no I never lived with Chris, Joe and Drew in Vegas but knew Chris and Joe pretty well.

I injured my back playing soccer the night before and couldn't even stand the following day >(.

Kristen is very nice and helped me find a place to my satisfaction today. We are doing some more things on monday such as getting a bank account setup and moving in so I will give a more in depth report then. I will say this that property prices in the nice parts of Costa Rica are somewhat comparable to the states so keep that in mind. Living in general however is much cheaper.

Thanks for the update, yeah I knew real estate prices were similar to the states, but I am looking forward to some fresh organic food, I heard that is cheaper! I guess maids and gardeners are cheaper as well, and from what I hear internet service and utilities are more expensive.

Sorry to hear about your back, you missed out, that Chorse event was the funnest time I have ever had playing poker!! Haha it was such a blast!

Sorry, I must have misunderstood Drew, I thought he said you were one of their room-mates, the guy that took your place was super nice, I guess he lives in Costa Rica too. Lol, we are taking over that place!

Hi ladies,

I didn't leave the US just for poker, but it was certainly a factor. I am now in Canada and highly recommend it.

I'm happy to provide info if anyone has questions. Being back on stars really is the bomb.

Kami

(and hi to the PTPers!)

I'm a Vegas native & as crazy as that city could be I don't think I could swing Costa Rica - I know people who are from there that are scratching at the walls to get out. Why not somewhere safe like Canada? -

Guess I should have read the last part of the thread Good choice on Canada - GL!

I don't care for Vegas none too much, I am only here for the live poker opportunities, Costa Rica is more my taste as far as climate, geography, and lifestyle.

Don't get me wrong, Costa Rica is beautiful just a bit shady from what I've heard. I'd take the beach over Vegas dirt any day as long as it was some what safe.
