Making game more interesting for casual players

I'm not sure if it's been discussed before, but I didn't find a good thread about it.

Like it or not, we are in the entertainment business and the reason why we're able to make money is mostly because of casual players. Using chat to get more rematches can be +EV. So why not use occasional chat to keep our casual players more entertained?

Any good lines/ideas?

If the person wants to chat I usually will engage them in chat even at the cost of slowing down my other tables.

The reason why there is no thread for this, is because regulars do not wish to surrender edge to other players and makeing the fish playing "the other one" longer, will make the fish lose more money to your competition. So, yes, chatting might be +EV (in a given situation) but makeing a thread about it is very much -EV.

Chat doesn't bring about that much edge on average and I've never heard any (serious) pro talk about chat secrets.

It's a lot more common that people tilt themselves or distract themselves (burn up EV) than help themselves in chat.

All in all, it's probably more valuable to make a thread about not chatting.

- Stay nice to players that are being nice/not saying anything mean to you. Friendly games can equal fun to players that aren't interested in one upsmanship via immature insults.

- Needle the harassing, chat tilted player. This one is obvious, if a guy is calling you every name in the book, he's likely tilted. Smiley faces, ridiculous questions or even the occasional insult can drive someone over the edge.

- Sometimes ignoring the player is the most +EV move. Not just because it allows you to focus on the game, focus on decisions and not get distracted by insults, but it can also infuriate a player to no end.

When and where you apply these methods is the real skill though.

Re: Making game more interesting for casual players

I don't engage in chat anymore but if villain engages me, much of Ryan's post is kinda what I do. If he's being a ****, I will subtly needle him once or twice and then shut up, this gets them off their rockers and they will lose it and play even worse!

Then there are the nice guys, a few days ago, a nice guy gently chatted, I responded nicely, just a couple of key words here and there like 'nh' or 'sry, me suckout king!' and he 'loled' and played on. He was so relaxed that he even said 'let's gamble' with J2 on a 875 board (I had TT) and called my jam. He played me for an hour, I took him for a ****load of money. At the end he said 'gotta go. gg. see u around!' and I said 'ggs. talk soon.' We were very friendly the whole way and I got him relaxed and willing to pay me off and he left the session I'm certain feeling good about his experience.

Mostly at my stakes, we just play and no one says anything. But when villain decides to speak, depending on whether he's being nice or rude, like in the game of poker, adjusting with a couple of key words helps induce villain to spew in either case imho.

Any chance that husng.com will make a video covering this topic with examples and such ?

As I was typing the post I was thinking about it, but there's not a lot else to add I think. A freebie type video going through what I posted with a little more detail and if we're lucky a few examples, would be nice.

I'm moving, so it won't happen from me for at least a few weeks, I've had two players talk about making a chat video, but I think that's more of entertainment/engaging arguments than knowledge (I could be off base, if they ever follow through on that video we'll find out for sure).
