Hi

I am a 9max sng player trying to improve HU play. The hand below HU in a sng I would be auto shoving this versus a guy this passive and tight, but you advise obv fold.
We have 5bb so I dont get why its a fold?

Hand #51
Poker Stars $11.00+$0.50 No Limit Hold'em Tournament - t50/t100 Blinds - 2 players - View hand 289489
The Official DeucesCracked.com Hand History Converter

Hero (BTN/SB): t560 M = 3.73
BB: t2440 M = 16.27

Pre Flop: (t150) Hero is BTN/SB with 9 3
1 fold

Final Pot: t150
BB wins t100
(Rake: t50)

meh, 93 is kind of a crap hand, if he's tight you can shove ATC here almost, just need to know what his callingrange is; rest is maths

I know this thread is a few weeks old, but just putting in my .02 that it's very well done and appreciated, especially for someone new to HUSNGs. Tried to think about responses before I read them, and I'm glad to say I came up with the same on most.

buffy you know that 93o is a fold yo! He's getting so shortstacked that he's gonna start calling too wide for it to be profitable imo.

+1

The logic behind "betting for protection" tilts me.

cannot really follow you guys - why not protect a hand and make it unprofitable for villain to call with draws e.g. and if he calls get value ...

can you explain me that?

Then that's not "protection". You're betting for "value".

Betting to fold out villain's equity share with worse hands is betting for protection. You're not exactly bluffing, since villain fold worse hands, but you're making sure he doesn't get to realise his equity in the pot. The main reason we're betting is not value, it is to "bluff out" worse hands with a lot of equity against us, but if villain doesn't fold those, it's not too bad cause he has less than 50% against us with those hands. It's not a valuebet, since his calling range probably has more than 50% against us.

EDIT: And I just realized this thread is a few months old. Sorry.

Thanks for the great post, gave me more confidence in my game.
Was first thinking why fold A6 diamonds but makes more sence when thinking about defending ranges and seeing that this guy is easy, so we can leave these spots and get better equity in other situations. A6 call would be only win small/lose a lot. I think if i 3bet in this situ and he shoves i would only call with AA and KK
