I don't think I'll ever become HU Employee Of The Month but I work hard too! For me, it's all about $$$, but to make $$$ you will also be successful, accomplished, reach the top, and those things are all tied together and keeps me motivated.

BTW, my dad is a professor, and the passion he has for teaching I see in you too.

Also, you are good-looking guy.

Finally, is that an Audi Q7 u r driving?

ya i was basically 100% free-thought in both vids. thinking about it a bit more, i guess my main point actually ties into the main point of this article as well - to maximize $$$ over the long term, you have to approach poker in a way that suits you best...keeps you motivated/fresh and just enjoy it.

i definitely think by making less now by doing a bunch of free teaching stuff and just talking to poker players and what not, i end up making more long term bc it keeps my passion for the game alive (more than ever).

definitely not suggesting that anyone approach poker exactly how i do, i really try to get that across as clear as i can. if you want to just play 100%, never post strat ever, dont talk to anyone, and just crush - i say good for you...i'm just arguing that you better really enjoy the process bc making a career out of it requires a lot more than "sucking it up and grinding"

and thx for my D a bit. i appreciate your kind words, haha

it's a '11 Jeep Wrangler actually:

good luck

I know a lot of regs disagree with you on pacing yourself over your poker career but I completely agree with you. You see so many flameouts, leaderboards that change all the time, guys that cannot stay on top. These guys burn out. No doubt you cannot sustain purely grinding for years on end leading an unbalanced life without the bottom dropping out (except for maybe 1%). Things like family, friends, relations, working out, reading books, playing sports, video games (like the arcade console you have next to your HU Employee Of The Month plaque in your condo ), all are pretty obviously necessary if you want to maintain duration. What is seen as -EV is actually very much +EV, they just don't realize it.

Wrangler, I see...highest resale value of any car.

i actually haven't really had many people disagree with me too much, haha. maybe they just aren't posting in the forum though? weaksauce.

i think their are exceptions that can play a ton and just love it and it's great for them but for most it's not. show me a SuperNova Elite and i'll show you a life fish the huge % of the time. you can reach SNE without sacrificing everything else in your life, and if you can't - it's definitely not worth it imo.

I did an interview for Jared Tendler on 'The Mental Game Show' on QuadJacks Radio. I spent some time talking about this article, as well as a bunch of other mental game topics. Let me know what you think.

**btw, i forgot to get back to this during the interview, but in hindsight if i could rename this article it would be "playing poker for a living: push, rest, repeat" or something ":it's a series of sprints"...something to that nature. oh well

listened to the whole thing, definitely interesting stuff.

Do you have any tips on how to deal with autopilot / losing focus while playing? Drugs maybe? :P

thanks.

i think a clearer picture of your short and long term goals is really helpful in improving focus. gives you a clear idea of your short term purpose...has worked for me at least.

Def not making fun of you. Even if I was, most of what you are saying is true, so hard to troll without looking foolish. You have a lot of positive energy, and I can tell you are a very happy person, I am very jealous. Like I said, I look forward to seeing more of your vids in the future. GL w/ everything.

How do you feel about building the mental muscle by trying to learn to play for longer maybe you start with 7 days then take 2 days of then 8 days 2 days off and so on?

Decided to show some love for this article. Good job Hokie!

I strongly believe that the idea is very useful not only for professional players but also for others, more recreational players like me for example.

Another thing that makes it even better is that it is applicable not only for poker but nearly any other walk of life. Again wp

Also would be interesting to hear some toughts on live vs online poker burnout.

I know some storys of live players that played every day for 10+ hours.
Most of the legends have done that i dont think doyle brunson have been taking that many breaks?
