About the Author

Will Tipton is a PhD candidate currently studying at Cornell University. He is known online as Sargon38 (Full Tilt Poker) and has been playing poker since 2007. He's received a lot of praise for his book, as well as his private coaching. Will is known as "yaqh" here on 2p2.

Video Series Breakdown

Video 1 - Introduction

What's in the book, what's in the videos, and -- what is GTO?

Video 2 - Solving river situations with Gambit (44 minutes)

Gambit is a freely-available, non-poker-specific software package for setting up and solving games described by decision trees. In this video, I start out with a hand history and show you how to use Gambit and EDVis to model the river play and find, to good approximation, the GTO strategies. Exploitative play and other uses of the two software tools are also discussed.

Video 3 - Post-game analysis with decision trees (2 parts -- 1:27 total)

In part one, I give commentary on my first matches against genericsn987/howgood2good, and show you how to characterize and adjust to a very aggressive regular with unusual ranges. In part two, I show you how to study and analyze opponents' strategies away from the table by organizing all the lines they take into a decision tree.

Video 4 - Estimating unexploitable continuing frequencies (1:09)

So-called "non-auto-profit" calculations can be a very useful tool for estimating unexploitable frequencies in various spots. However, they are almost always used incorrectly! Remember -- using bad theory is usually worse than using no theory at all. In this video, I review the theory behind these calculations, show you when they are and are not appropriate, and show you how to use them effectively.

Video 5 - Split pot river spots (2 parts -- 1:10 total)

How do you play the river when the board runs out K9TrJQ? Do you try to bluff your opponent off chops? Do you check and pray he lets you get to showdown cheaply? In this video, I show how to find unexploitable strategies in this sort of spot using two methods: the Equilibration Exercise and the Gambit software. Additionally, I discuss computationally-generated GTO strategies for a river spot on a double-paired board -- another spot where many of the players' hands chop at showdown.

Video 6 - River play from the BB with one bet behind (1:04)

In this video, I look at river play from the BB with one bet behind. I start by solving for the unexploitable play of this game using [0,1] approximation, and then go into a systematic discussion of how to split your ranges when playing versus exploitable opponents in the SB. I show how to use EV distributions to visualize the most profitable way to play with your entire range against a variety of different exploitable tendencies.

Video 7 - Reading your own hand (15 minutes)

In this short video which I hope will help you tie everything together, I talk about the importance of developing the habit of reading your own hand every time you play.

yaqh's book is the nuts! Honestly, I am lost for words! This book is truly remarkable and not like anything I have ever seen printed before!

First, It's not often we get a entire poker book dedicated to HU, second the book really hit the nail on the head. It's well written and give you all the strategic tools you need. It's not an easy book to read instead it is one you must study. But it's very well organized, clearly written and lots of examples are provided to make it easier to understand all the concepts and ideas.

Expert Heads Up No Limit Hold'em, Volume 1: Optimal and Exploitative Strategies is just a "must have" for any serious HU player and, IMO, one of the most interesting and exciting poker book published this last 3 years.

I knew yaqh to be an intelligent poster and I remember him being a damn good poker player but as the writer of this book...WOW !! I am gobsmacked!

Absolutely.

Like many of the better guys making heads up sng content, Will offers some fresh perspective, ideas and strategy. He's also a guy that I like to refer to as a fact based person (blatantly stolen from Mers always advocating a "fact based approach"). It's such a good way to describe people who are after solid reasoning, not secrets, shortcuts, emotional happiness or other non max EV ways to improve. It seems so simple, but so many are not after the correct decision all the time. Guys like Will, Mers, H2Olga, plenty of other posters on this forum, they are after the right answers and it is reflected in the quality of their posts (and in this case, book).

Don´t want to sound like an ass (really), but

what are Yaqh´s acomplishments in poker?

I understand he is an old poster here on 2p2, but what kind of games/level he plays, and what kind of success he´s had there?

I get the feel it is some theory heavy book, so how translatable to real world plays is it

it's a Game theory heavy book but he has done a very good job of always showing the application of the concepts at the table with multiple examples. (IMO that's not the case for "the mathematics of poker" for instance). The books gives you the tools to build your own strategies so don't expect it to be a book that will tell you how to play HU or you will be disapointed.

in anycase, how you translate very good theory in real play depends not only on how good the author is but how good, as a reader, you are at transposing it at the table and in your study of the game.

As for his achievements I am not sure it's relevant. For instance, there are a lot of good coaches in many sports that have never been a star playing themselves. I don't know yaqh personaly (and it's not for me to say what his sn was) but I can, nevertheless, tell you that he was already a feared reg 3 years ago.

I have interupted a 36 c day on the beach to answer this. Isn't that proof that the boook is good?

Thanks genher but I decided to out my s/n and a sharkscope screenshot is here:

So.. I'm no livb, but I don't think my results are bad either. They did suffer from some amount of bankroll nittery tho :/.

As far as my qualifications go other than my results, this book was really made possible by an earlier project of mine. Essentially, I developed a software package to solve approximate HUNL games. Through doing and using that, I learned a ton about how game theory applies to poker, and that's the knowledge that I really wanted to pass on in the book. Certainly I've played enough poker to know what interesting questions are to ask, and I've worked hard enough at the math/computation to answer many of them for you guys. So yea, it's a theory-heavy book, but the idea was definitely to show why this stuff is directly applicable to your at-the-tables decision making.

Actually I think that one of my biggest strengths as a player is in quickly identifying opponents' strategies and coming up with good plans to exploit them. This does show up in the book -- there is lots of discussion of specific spots, tips about how to pick up on what your opponents are doing, etc. I focus on the theory stuff because that's where I thought I could contribute the most value, but overall this is definitely a book about how to make money playing hold'em.

No, we've worked it out so that users aren't going to be punished/shorted for ordering right now, through the publisher or through Amazon.

There will be a complimentary video series out soon (2-3 weeks is the current estimate, but it could be a bit sooner or later).

We'll make it so that previous purchasers of the book can just purchase the video series if they want once that is ready. Users that have not purchased the book yet can purchase them both together.

That way, you can purchase the book now and not worry about waiting in order to buy the video series too.
