HU SNG Regular/Turbo - Is it worth it? HU SNG Regular/Turbo - Is it worth it?

Hi guys.

I'm a 6-max cash player, nl25 at the moment.

I always liked to play some HU SNG TURBO on stars. Haven't played them since 2015.

Yesterday played a couple of $3.5 - $7. I enjoy them, and think I wouldn't have any problem beating them with some studing.

My questions is... is it worth the time? But I have no interest in grinding $7 for a long time.

Pokerstars also removed the 10.50 HU KO that was very popular, and there's only one weekly tournament with a buy-in smaller than $200.
  • Is there any future in HU SNG players with all the spin&go and whatever?
  • Is there any traffic for the $30s and $60s SNG?
  • Is it possible to reach the $100s and $200s?
  • Would you say it is worth it to start playing those games in 2017?

I don't like hypers. So I'm asking regarding turbo and regular speed.

Sorry for my english. I know is not the best, hope is good enough.

Cheers!

What turns you off about hyper turbos?

A lot of being really good at turbos is having a strong short stack game, and it's very cross-applicable. The turbo/reg speed players that ignored end game really have paid for it in the long run, so much edge can be found at the shorter 7-25bb stacks.

As far as being worthwhile, there's plenty of profitability in these games, especially if you mix in non-Stars sites. Action decreases as you move up in stakes a lot more drastically than with hyper turbos, but your per game edge is greater and generally turbos are going to be softer per level (both in regs and casual players), though if you're not very good you'll be facing good players in any HUSNG almost every match. Like hypers, if you're really good you'll be avoided throughout the low to mid stakes by most good regulars. Only when you reach the higher stakes will a really good player be consistently challenged.

I'd say go for it if you're eager to improve your short stack game, as that's a big part of your success. Otherwise, I would skip it, turbos may be slower and deeper, but that's only part of the skillset needed.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it and I will keep it in mind

If you like husngs, there's still money to be made. With a decent chunk of work, it's possible to reach the $30/$50 level (depending on site). Beyond that I think it gets harder, but if you like the games a lot and work hard there's no reason you can't be playing $60s or $100s after putting in the hours.

People always ask these "is it worth it?" questions that I just think are horribly misguided. If you enjoy playing husngs, it's worth it. You won't get anywhere in poker forcing yourself to pick up a format you don't enjoy, because getting decent takes hundreds or thousands of hours -- you'll burn out long before you get anywhere if you don't like the format.

On the flip side, you can make decent money (say, $20/hr) playing just about any format if you develop your skills enough...and more than that in plenty of them (including husngs). So it's worth it if you enjoy husngs and want to learn them. If you're only focused on your bottom line, then find a format you enjoy more.

Also, as Chiry said, endgame is very important (especially in turbos) and still a big source of edge. It's cool if you don't want to play <25bb poker all the time, but you're leaving a couple % roi on the table if you neglect endgame study and just play a very simple strat.

What exactly classifies as "endgame"? Under 20bb's and approaching push/shove mode?
