I've been looking at books to buy and study and not sure if there is a "cutoff" for if the book is too old to be relevant. Any suggestions. Also are poker training sites such as Tournament Poker Edge worth the money. Thanks.

It depends on what your startpoint is, how much have you played/ read already?

The game does move on quickly, but there is still so much value in Sklansky's books: Theory of Poker, No Limit Hold'em Theory and Practice and particularly Tournament Poker were the foundations of what I started out with.

The Harrington on Hold'em series is worth a look too, as is Sit and Go Strategy by Collin Moshman (the key concepts cross over into MTTs)

Lee Nelson's books (Kill Everyone etc) are also valuable

I haven't used TPE myself, but have been considering it for a while. There is enough decent video training content available for free on youtube etc that I haven't felt the need to subscribe to it quite yet

If anything, as time goes on I'm spending less of my study time reading books versus watching videos, listening to podcasts, reviewing hand histories anyway - but I think that the books I've listed can still give a solid foundation that the rest can then build on

There is so much available online these days that books seem like a waste. That being said, one I did read recently (actually listened to the audiobook) was Jonathan Little's Bluff. I'm a recreational player so I don't want to pay for resources and I've found a lot of material available for free. For youtube videos "gripsed" has done a lot, and there are several good free podcasts (TPE, Little's weekly poker hand, and the Postflop Poker Podcast to name a few).

I find tremendous value in a lot of different materials. I have dozens of books on my kindle I still refer too. There's a lot of free content online through YouTube.

Jonathan Little, for example, has a lot of good stuff but it can be expensive. He does put out free webinars from time to time so you can jump on that. You could gather a lot of info pretty much for free anyways.

Sites like ICMpoker.com are definitely worth it if you have the $$.

I would look at it this way: As you win and grow your bankroll more you can invest in things that cost a little money to boost your win rate even more. I'd like to purchase all the good stuff like Poker Snowie, Flopzilla, etc. It can be expensive to maintain all these memberships especially if you're not a full time player.
