I figured I was ahead when villain check called two streets and checked on river so I decided to go for a third barrel. Does this line always mean I'm behind?

If villain flopped a set, two pair, or even top pair with a strong kicker, I could see check-calling on the flop but I would expect a bet or check-raise on the turn. I guess it's possible you could check-call something like QQ on the flop but would most people do that on the turn with 9QT and two clubs on the board?

I also think that board with the third club and the 6 is going to prevent any sets from coming over the top for fear of the flush or straight, because it opens up other hands as ones that have them beat and that are absolutely in the range of hands that you could be raising with.

So it's hard for me to envision a situation where you're ahead against a hand that came over the top. I'm guessing it's either Jc8c with a gutshot straight draw on the flop, or maybe Ac9c with second pair and a flush draw on the turn.

The tricky part here is the bet on the river. The likely hands that would call that bet (sets, top pair, two pair) - I feel like I can discount based on the check-call nature of the betting. The only one that might have been played like that was QQ and that would beat me. (Maybe you can argue 99 would play that way, too, but that's one hand.) So I have to assume that the only hands that will either call or raise me were at worst flushes or straights, so in that case I'm probably better off checking, because I have good showdown value in the case of a missed draw, top pair, a smaller set, etc. And if I'm beaten I lose 10BB and still have chips to play with.

The other part of this hand is the pre-flop bet. UTG, while you were fortunate to not see any action it's probably better to bet closer to 4x BB if you're going to get involved in a hand. You want to play these hands with as little competition as possible and <2.5xBB bets invite action. It also makes it harder to put your opponent on a range because they're coming into the pot so cheap. I know there are different schools of thought on pre-flop raises but I'm a big proponent in larger raises in early position because you're generally playing with premium hands in those spots (or at least should be), and smaller raises in later position when you expand your range.

Of course, I'm new here so I can be completely wrong.

I would jam river myself. Pretty std bet/bet/jam spot with sets. Yea he can trap with runner runner stuff that beats you but that's a small part of his range. I would cbet 60% here with your hand. Not many turns are great and we don't mind taking this down otf. From turn on we play for stacks
