What keeps SC2 players from getting into shape?

Hi guys, I'm starting a small project which is trying to teach SC2 players how to get in shape. However, I'd like to get to know what exactly are stopping gamers from getting into health.

I feel like I just got really lucky and had really fit friends, which made the transition into lifting weights very easy for me, as they were extremely helpful.
However, this prevents me from knowing what stops other gamers from learning how to be fit - is it laziness, too much conflicting information out there, fear of trying something new, too much work?

I'd appreciate any responses I get - it really helps! PM me if you feel like the answer's too personal.

My site got to the front page of starcraft reddit 2 days ago, so I think it's at least somewhat helpful/informative. If you could check it out and let me know any feedback you have, I'd be suuuuper appreciative

What makes you think sc2 players in particular tend to not be in shape?

He doesn't really care about that, he just needed a way to put his site on here lol.

Which is fine, don't get me wrong, but let's just be honest about it. We all know why people who aren't in shape tend to never get in shape.

Working out isn't easy. Even though it can make you feel great (and even high sometimes, endorphins ftw) it still is a pain in the ass.

Anyway, sorry if that came off as rude but c'mon, we know that you know why people are fatties haha.

Will check the site out in a bit and let you know what I think.

Re: What keeps SC2 players from getting into shape?

I will remove the site if people think it's spammy, not my intent. The feedback is infinitely more important to me than having a couple of hits.

@Gospy - well America has 68% overweight or obese people, so I'd venture that SC2 players probably have the same averages as well?

@Lok2 - I was pretty out of shape 3 months ago. Since then, I've lost 15 lbs and gained significant strength. I honestly never thought it would be this easy, but like I said, I've been lucky to have friends and mentors guide me every step of the way.

I definitely do NOT know why people are fatties, but I really would like to know, hence the post. If I knew, I could create posts directed towards the issues.

Also, thanks for checking out the site

Venturing to guess seems like a pretty bad idea imo. I don't think that sc2 players are representative of the entire population. I really don't understand the point you are going for, but maybe that's on my end.

However, I'd venture to guess this will be closed.

Re: What keeps SC2 players from getting into shape?

I'm not really a fan of some of the articles. I understand that some of this is written in appeal to sc2 players, but some of these analogies are a bit out there (and makes the entire article harder to read). I'm reading this sleep article now and it just detracts from the entire point of the article (the sc2 descriptions that is).

ALSO, I'm not really sure what league some of the writers are in, but some of the advice is a bit off.

Quote:
In Bronze league you could propel yourself into high Silver league by just 6-pooling or cheesing every game. Will this help you improve your game mechanics? Not really. Will this lead you into Diamond league? Definitely not.
There are some unconventional players that cheese every game. Obviously their mechanics and transitions are better, but I'm sure there are people out there that have gotten to masters just by cheesing. Regardless, I know this isn't the point of the article, but just a little tid bit.

@orange Which articles are the out there ones? I could ask the authors to do a bit of re-editing if they aren't clear. Warbak was a masters player, and Knifehands was a platinum player. I'm a gold league player.

@gospy Legitimately curious, why do you think SC players aren't out of shape (or less out of shape than average Americans).

Not what I said.

I'll humor you though.

-Gamers tend to be younger and obesity peaks in middle age being nearly 2/3 higher proportionally than 18-25 ish. (I can find a source for this, but I remember reading it in some health poll)
-Gamers(and this extends to poker as well) tend to be more affluent and obesity is statistically significantly higher in poorer groups of people.

Gaming is a hobby, not a lifestyle. And being healthy is a lifestyle.

I wasn't a huge fan of that 'sleep-defending zerg siege' one. I think the topic of the article is fine; the content is just a bit diluted with starcraft 2 jargon. I understand that this is the audience that you're aiming for, but it's still a bit unorganized.

One thing I do like are the goals at the end. It's a good idea to have differing goals- this section can probably even be expanded.

This is a good post. Some random thoughts on it:

-Gamers (as a whole) are probably nerdier and have been so their entire lives. While nerdy doesn't necessarily = nonathletic, I would imagine that the average hardcore gamer probably isn't your typical ex-football/basketball player. And that obviously doesn't mean that ex FB/BB player = great shape for life (or even healthy lifestyle), but at least they will have a background in getting into shape and doing many physical activities.

-Gaming (and poker) encourages a sentient lifestyle- I mean, you're on your computer for hours on end. You read forums or you watch replays/streams for hours, etc. I guess I can see your average gamer maybe being a bit out of shape with this lifestyle. (But obviously many probably just go out and exercise in addition to playing sc2, etc).

Re: What keeps SC2 players from getting into shape?

Well that depends on your definition of gamer. Everyone these days plays video games. Not everyone plays all day. Casuals rule the video game world today.

I don't disagree with your points about hardcore gamers/poker players but I was just trying to reinforce my previous statement.
