I have a question @cueballmania. It seems like a situation where you become stagnated can easily occur -- where you basically end up playing the same 2 people over and over (losing to the guy above and beating the guy below). I can see this particularly happening in the top seeds. Is there any way to add some variability? I think for observing/casting it might be interesting to see different matchups more frequently, since I think people would get sick of watching me lose to pwncakery and beating raffy every match  .

Well, you are correct that the ratings will converge. The only bright light is that skill is not constant (while it's asymptotic, I will assume that it's boundless). Thus, if we run it enough times, the lower player might win a match and be bumped up for a week. Also, the influx of new players may mix it up.
One concern that I have is that the ladder system will replace the tournaments that run (mainly have ran). I think this system should supersede my rating system and encourage more competitiveness week to week. This also will address your initial concern.
