Re: 2+2 Ladder Feedback/Discussion Thread

With an ELO system, we could reduce the k-value (weight of the result) as a player plays more games.

Re: 2+2 Ladder Feedback/Discussion Thread

how about cueball's method plus a thread where people can announce who they played and who they beat and maybe post the reps. it won't be a brag thing and hopefully no BM but just so people can kind of keep a rough idea of who's getting better and keep people interested. a month is a long time

Re: 2+2 Ladder Feedback/Discussion Thread

I've been consuming copious amounts of alcohol this weekend and have to study for a final. I see numbers and variables and my eyes sort of slide right off without processing anything. I think a 2p2 ladder is a fabulous idea, and I'm more than happy to participate in it. Without using any numbers or variables, I'd support the system that best allows for both high and low volume players to compete without creating a hassle.

I think a rating is a bad idea. Lots of work, and the battlenet rating should translate to the 2+2 rating anyway so it doesn't really add much. A pure ranking system is better and less complicated imo.

Re: 2+2 Ladder Feedback/Discussion Thread

Unless someone else wants to take over, I do not plan to incorporate any additional "true skill rating". Only the rankings associated with this ladder will be used (bnet rankings will not be used, other than for the initial seeding). Also I firmly believe that only the outcome of the current match being played should affect the updated standings. Previous matches or custom games on the side should not factor in at all.

I have a question @cueballmania. It seems like a situation where you become stagnated can easily occur -- where you basically end up playing the same 2 people over and over (losing to the guy above and beating the guy below). I can see this particularly happening in the top seeds. Is there any way to add some variability? I think for observing/casting it might be interesting to see different matchups more frequently, since I think people would get sick of watching me lose to pwncakery and beating raffy every match .

Well, you are correct that the ratings will converge. The only bright light is that skill is not constant (while it's asymptotic, I will assume that it's boundless). Thus, if we run it enough times, the lower player might win a match and be bumped up for a week. Also, the influx of new players may mix it up.

One concern that I have is that the ladder system will replace the tournaments that run (mainly have ran). I think this system should supersede my rating system and encourage more competitiveness week to week. This also will address your initial concern.

Re: 2+2 Ladder Feedback/Discussion Thread

Just finished finals so now I have some time to work on setting up the ladder things.

I'm still thinking about how to set up matches so that we can get people to spectate and also play. Would setting specific times twice a week (say like Tuesday/Thursday @8pm eastern) work?

I actually realized from thinking about this that I get off work late, 9pm pacific, so I'm unlikely to be able to participate, but I don't mind running things/commishing things. It would be nice to get more specific input from people though about what times and how often you want to play, etc.

I am definitely in. It will be fun to get to know each others play style and actually get into the meta game. In BNet ladder you can do the same build order every single time and crush. With this it will get more and more fun as you build a playing history against certain opponents.

Re: 2+2 Ladder Feedback/Discussion Thread

I would prefer night games (EST timezone here), like 8pm+. In terms of frequency, maybe 1-3 sets/matches or whatever per week.

Re: 2+2 Ladder Feedback/Discussion Thread

I know there won't really be enough time to do this for Season 4 (and I have absolutely no idea how the "seasons" are even going to work in 2011), but I'll tentatively throw in a 1-season GSL subscription as a prize to the top ladder position at some TBD point-in-time.
