feel like we only got to see one legitimately good game out of that group. the skt players just cheesed each other constantly and squirtle wasn't good enough to compete

gomtv is gone.

GSL still exists, here http://www.twitch.tv/gsl/profile

Blizzard created WCS and more or less forced the major tournaments to collaborate with it (or GTFO). there are three regions. Korea still has all of the players on Korean (almost all Kespa at this point) teams and most of the talent. North America has the top Korean players on American teams, some of the reject Koreans, and the awful NA players. Europe has the remainder of the reject Koreans + MC + jjakji + MMA and the top European players.

If this forum is any indication of SC's health, it isn't doing too well

Even artosis only streams hearthstone and has basically abandoned meta to do hearthstone shows.

Is anyone else feeling like GSL's current system (where only 8 players are guaranteed to remain in Code S) is too strict? I mean, in the old days we had 24/32 staying in Code S and the rest went to the up/downs. Most people, including me, acknowledged that the system was too lenient and there was too little change.

GOM then changed it to what I think was a decent change at the time- the top 8 players remained in Code S, and the remainder were placed somewhere in the Code A tournament based on where they had been eliminated. However now with the virtual elimination of Code A, the process has become much stranger. Finishing in 9-12 gets you nothing more seeding-wise than had you gone 0-4 in your Ro32 group- a place in a round-robin group where a single bad day can knock you right into Code B.

Thoughts?

We could also think about it this way:

In WCS EU and NA, you need only advance to the Ro16 to be qualified for the next season. I don't think anyone would disagree with me saying that both WCS EU and WCS NA are, at the bottom, significantly weaker than GSL is.

GOM stated a while back that their goal in decreasing the number of automatically qualified players was to give as much of a chance to Code B/Code A players as possible- however, in doing so, they've also created a tournament that not only has the highest variance in the top placing players each season, but has a format where it's the hardest for the top players to requalify. Is this really something they want?

Yeah, I agree with you, the old format felt like it helped remove some of the variance that might cause the most talented players to sometimes get eliminated in freak accidents.

Like, as someone here pointed out when I first started watching GSL, you had to lose 3 best of 3s in a row to be sent to Code B:
- have to lose your first Code S match in the ro32
- have to lose in the loser's match in Code S ro32
- have to lose your first round Code A match

If you won any bo3s in your Code S group, you would be placed in round 2 of Code A (if you didn't advance to the Code S ro16 outright). If you lost both of those but won your first round Code A match, you're in round 2 of Code A. Once you're in round 2, that's an automatic berth in the up & downs and a spot in Code A next season if you don't re-qualify for Code S.

So, getting knocked to Code B was pretty hard. Now? Not so much, as we saw with Innovation.

it was even harder in the old old system

you had to go 0-2 (games, not sets LOL) in code S

then finish in the bottom 3/5 players in the up/downs

then you had to lose a best of 3 in code A

just ask MC how hard it was to do

If you want more turnover, why would you reduce the number of tournaments by 40% per year?
