apologize for the noob question but how does buying rooms work?

the person with the comped room has to check in then adds your name to the room and gives you the keys?

The way I purchase rooms are as follows..

I check in at the desk with the person I am buying the room from and give my credit card to the check-in person for any room holds. Next, The person who I buy the room from either comes up to the room with me to make sure everything is ok before I pay him/her or I can just pay him/her after the check in process at the desk(if it is someone I have done business with before).
