I'm not 100%, it could be some kind of programming trickery to simulate that, but it's probably your brain deducing where the sound is coming from based on visual cues.
The left and right speakers (plus mid/rear etc, depending on how many surround channels you're using) differentiate the sounds that originate in a 2D plane parallel to the ground, but what differentiates the origin of sound in the 2D plane that is perpendicular to the ground? Nothing, because surround setups don't have a high and low speaker, which would be the perpendicular plane equivalent of the left and right/front and rear speakers that cover the parallel plane. Also, the parallel plane is way more important than perpendicular plane.

probably a toslink cable, shouldn't matter for my setup running HDMI from the 360 into the receiver and then using the headphone out on the receiver
I've used the TB X1's and Senn. HD595's but mostly just use floorstanding speakers bc I'm lazy
