More seriously, staying alert and aware of surroundings can't hurt. Practicing some form of self-defense surely is also beneficial in many ways, as long as you don't let it lead to over-confidence in your abilities. I suspect most martial-artists are like poker players and vehicle-drivers, 90% believing themselves to be in the top 10%.
