Me and a mate decided recently to give poker a decent crack and move up through the limits using good bankroll management, like everyone seems to be going on about.
We've been playing online poker on and off for about 4 years, the standard pattern being:
1. Deposit between $20-50
2. Play $5 SNGs
3. Get up to $100
4. Get bad beated a few times, run into a cooler hands, etc, end up back down to $50
4. Play a few $10 games, a few $5 tourneys, end up with about $15/20
5. Put it all on the ring in 10-25NL
6. Eventually get bad beated and lose a massive hand
7. Go bust
8. Rinse and repeat
I must have gone through this half a dozen times before listening to people talk about bankroll management... so here I am.
I've played 70k hands at 2NL over the last 19 days on Stars with a rocky start and eventually some reasonable results.
I realise I have quite a nitty VPIP, but in the first 25k hands it was at 17. Loosening my pre-flop range didn't seem to be paying off (even though I was running 10 BIs below EV), probably because my postflop play wasn't all that great, so I ended up tightening the range as well as forcing myself to not be in love with TPTK / two pair hands.
Here is what the graph looks like when I voluntarily put money into the pot.
And by position:
Some other interesting stats: Set mining ($ won when hit - $ lost when didn't hit): $76.88 - $43.15 = $33.73 (hit 228 times, didn't hit 1,525 times = hit 13%) C-betting the flop with high card: $13.20 (395 times)
Obvious leaks: All in with AKo: -$7.53 (44 hands) All in with AQs: -$2.97 (7 hands)
Possible leaks: Calling 3-bet pre-flop with hands < KK: -$4.55 (131 hands)
Anyway, I'll be posting my results here on my journey to 25NL. I think that's a reasonable goal for now. I'll also post some interesting, epic and/or suck out hands here for your entertainment.
I'm following this guide for my BR management, although I won't be cashing out for 2NL, I'll be moving straight on to 5NL.
If any kiwis read this, hit me up 'cause I'm always looking for games.
Really think you should be opening up more pre flop as you're leaving a bunch on money on the tables nittin' it up like that.
Thanks. Yeah, I agree.
I think I'm better placed to do it now that I have a good HUD set up and understand the stats far better than earlier.
I've also been playing about 15 tables on average, which is possibly causing me to miss out on some dead money by auto-folding certain hands before I can remind myself to check stats and position, etc.
Hand 1: That's just a cooler, you played that hand well.
Hand 2: Absolutely hate the way you played this hand. It worked out in this scenario but against regs/as you move up you are going to be leaving a lot of value by jamming over that bet on the flop, the situation I think you are usually going to run into in this scenario is opponents with worse hands fold and opponents with hands that crush you call (sets/2pair, etc.).

What would you have done differently for hand #2? Raise 60% of the pot on the flop instead of the shove?
Sup bro, I'm From NZ (Waiheke Island) but currently working/living in Sydney for last year. About to start a similar path NL2 but 6man Zoom, Currently semi close to your story tbh used to make small deposit's but as of late i never really needed to load as i was grinding small sng's (1.50 KO 90mans) did decent over a small sample. Decided with my time frame that i'd rather play cash (live i do well) so figured i'd start grinding.
Want to know if you want to start like a Skype session were we can post HH + advise and general chat ? Hit me up via PM if so. Also gl on the grind ! FR non zoom going to be so many Nits when you start climbing haha.
2nd hand i would def be not shoving that (but then again im not one to give that much advise) i just see that only sets/2pair would be calling that on a flop or possibly a strong flush draw, All of theses have you beat unless you hit ( and like above post said as you climb you would def not be maximizing your hand/losing so much $ in the long run). 60%bet sounds about right or even potting is what i would of done and see where we are on the turn.
Please do not take my advise like i said thats what i would of done.
Hit me up if you keen to help each other climb climb climb =)

Hey bro, how's it? Waiheke Island, mean!
What's Sydney like? I'm looking at moving to Melbourne in a few weeks for a couple of months before heading to London to smash out another year or two over there.
Keen on the Skype idea, I'll flick you a PM.
Yeah good advice re hand #2, looking back I agree 100%. I let the two villians' stats get to my head and just shoved hoping they'd call with **** pairs! And true that about the nits in FR, but it's not so bad if you're playing 16-18 tables - keeps me busy enough. I've got a pretty mean HUD / hot keys / stacking setup so it's easy as pie to play 18 tables and have a movie / something playing at the same time to keep me occupied. Plus I table select hard, any table that drops below average VPIP of 20 I sit out of and replace with a fresh one.
Good luck with your goal man, I've only played a little Rush at FT but that was way back in the day before black Friday. It was too fast paced for me!
