Fund 12 months around the world playing cards

Hello PG&C!! (Warning TLDR)

You might remember me from this thread where at the start of September last year I decided I set two goals:

1) Make first $10k month
2) Make $50k total by the end of the year

I succeeded in 1 but ended the year short of my $50k total after hitting a wicked downswing in October/November.

Anyway towards the end of the thread I came up with the idea of quitting my job and travelling the world supporting myself (and my girlfriend) by playing this game we love. Well.....I did it!!

I handed in my notice this week and plans are being made for global domination. I'm still working as of now (had to give 2 months notice because I'm somewhat hard to replace) but it's happening and I feel really good about it.

I said I'd start a new thread when I quit so here it is...

Travel Goals:

At the moment our basic plan is to split the year in thirds and spend 4 months each in SE Asia, Europe, and Americas.

ASIA: This is the only part that has received any real planning at this stage. Initially we will fly to Singapore for a week or so then head to our first major stop in Phuket, Thailand. I've been trolling the Thailand threads in the Travel Forums and it sounds like there is pretty decent 2p2 community there and that accommodation and living costs will me nice and cheap. After Thailand we plan to do some touring through other Asian countries before moving to the Philippines for another long stop before heading back to Singapore and heading West.

EUROPE: On the way we are going to stop in Dubai where through some connections we have some accommodation and tour guide hook ups. Europe seems the most daunting leg of the journey as I've never been and the options are infinite. Like Asia the basic plan is to pick 1-3 places where we can set up camp for 3-6 weeks and get my grind on and then spend the rest of the time being more of a tourist and seeing the sights. Options at this stage for grinding stops are Turkey, Malta, Croatia, and Spain. Basic requirements for grinding stops are cheap accommodation, good weather, beaches and stable internet if anyone has other suggestions...

AMERICAS: 4 months after arriving in Europe we fly out from London to NYC. I have family/friends all over the states but mostly on the West Coast who we will probably drop in and visit at some stage. We holidayed through Mexico a couple years ago and loved it so I think I'd like to go back and find some place by the beach to grind for a while. Also like to spend time in Argentina and Brazil after some very good friends raved about those places after returning recently.

The world is a big place and the more we try and plan stuff out the more new ideas we come up with!! I don't really want to try and plan too much as I figure a lot of the best places we probably don't even know about yet!

Poker Goals:

Not sure how realistic this is going to be as I don't really know how easy it is going to be to put in volume when travelling but her goes:

1m hands
$100k total profit

Maybe a bit ambitious but hey that's what goals are about!!

Year so far:

I'll be mostly playing 9 handed rush and ring games. I'm playing mostly $200nl at the moment but I'm slowly adding $400nl back in after moving down last year.

I'll try and keep this thread updated with my progress as often as I can with my travel and poker progress. I'd love to catch up with some 2p2ers on my journey, if you see I'm in you neighbourhood hit me up via PM or in this thread and we can try and meet up for a cold one.

I've wafted on long enough. /OP

Thanks for this, I did a bit of research and you're totally right. I think Turkey is out as a grinding destination although I do want to visit still. Looks like Bulgaria and Poland might be good destinations based on tonight's research and I hardly considered them before.

I'm also thinking SE Asia grinding might be split between Thailand, Philippines and also Vietnam.

I've discussed this idea with my girlfriend a couple of times, seems more than doable if you play mid stakes (although I actually need to get to mid stakes first ). GL OP, I'll be following this thread with alot of interest.

Wow! Thanks for all the support guys. I'm going to try and keep the thread interesting with a combination of poker content and TR's from various experiences along the way.

I'm 29 which is part of the motivation for the trip. I've been thinking about doing something like this for years but never actually put in to action. I'm not getting any younger and I think being on the cusp of 30 was the catalyst to get my ass into gear and just do it!

I did a similar one year trip 3 years ago. Asia, Australia, US, New Zeland(im from Europe).

Had a blast, but Im not sure how you will get on playing poker on your travels. You will have some problems. I dont know what accomadation you plan on using but in most hostels the internet is choppy and unreliable. If you are planning on playing on a laptop you might struggle with multitabling. But your biggest problem will be you will never want to play. There will be too much to see and do. But good luck.

Re: Fund 12 months around the world playing cards

I have thought about those things and I think it will be ok. I'm planning to spend up to 10 weeks in some locations so I'm hoping I'll be able to organise better than hotel quality internet and I play mostly rush so multi-tabling won't be an issue.

Honestly I think motivation will be the hardest thing

Re: Fund 12 months around the world playing cards

Put in some good volume today (well by my standards at least) playing 3776 hands and finishing +$956.53, all $200nl RUSH

It's a little worrying to realize this is about the amount of hands I'm going to need 25 days a month to hit my volume goal for the year. I'm really going to need to work on grinding skills.
