Hi all,

Welcome to my Poker challenge thread.
I've been lurking around the 2+2 forums for quite some time and decided the time is now right to start "blogging" about my approach and experiences.

I am a Belgian, but I do live in Ukraine, I previously was having a promising career in IT working for one of the biggest IT companies out there, BUT, a combination of breaking up a 5-year relationship, a burnout and a global layoff program by my employer got me going from being a high-potentials 32 year old to being laid off (with good conditions) in the span of two years.

When it was clear I could benefit from the global layoff, I started travelling a lot with many of the internationals friends I met after my "divorce", it brought me to the USA, Barcelona, Rome and of all places the Ukraine.
I fell in love with place pretty much from my first trips and since 2013 I hardly left the country, overstaying many of my Visa's and was looking for opportunities to start my own business here.

I married here last October and so I am now a permanent resident in a country in crisis, I've had some attempts at starting a business, some of which went quite far but so far, the crisis and uncertainty in this country doesn't allow any of this.

I've been a poker adept since 2005ish but I was a fish feeding the sharks like so many others, Poker was a recreational weekend past-time and I wouldn't even play that much, it stayed that way until 2011.

In 2011 I picked it up again, playing live at the Brussels casino (2/2eur) games and some live 5-table 100 and 50eur rebuy SNG's.

I was able to do OK in the SNG's (made a deal for first place in one which earned me around 2600eur and won a ticket to the WPT Brussels, which I sold).

I burned most of it at the cash tables though and apart from that on travel, clothing and overall way too lavish lifestyle.

In early 2014 I picked up poker more seriously for the first time in my life, playing 5NL online and grinding the 45man SNG's.
BUT
Although I ran up my Bankroll to around 900$ at one point I burned it all off playing 25NL Omaha zoom and other games (for the FPP's) I had no business in playing.

Hence, I stopped again, wasting my time on games like Civilization and Age of Empires over the summer.

In September of 2014 my wife asked me to pick up poker again, since, "at least with poker you made some money", and so, I did.

I believe I still had 300$ in my BR and with a lot more studying this time I managed to run it up to around 3K in December.
Mostly due to a 1.7K 6th place in the 1+R 3x turbo in December and some other smaller wins in tournaments, an 8th place in the big 8.80 and a 12th place in the 2+r 2x rebuy.
Also I seemed to be quite good in the 2.5 turbo SNG's. I had a 25% roi over a 800ish tournament sample (binking first place 6 or 7 times in that sample).
When I hit that 3k BR, I took out 1k and kept 2k.
However when January came round my hot streak was officially over, someone at PS had turned of the run good switch and my BR took serious hits.
In January, I was playing a regular Tournament schedule which costed me about 100$ in daily buy-ins and most days I would not get any return on that investment.
Also I lost about 600$ playing 25NL Zoom, running about -7bb over a rather big sample.
It allowed me to get Platinum star starting February though, and a BR which hovered close to 500$.

Then I did 2 things which changed everything.
A) I read Treat your poker like a business by Dusty Schmidt
B) I read The mental game of Poker by Jared Tendler

I started concentrating on 10NL 6 max and noticed I did pretty good in them, actually crushing would be a better term (running at +10BB/100 over a large sample)

However, my previous Bankroll builder, the 2.5 SNG's still weren't very fond of me in February and due to my negative ROI in these games I still couldn't grind my BR up.
I used to think I was a winning player in the turbo's, but I honestly doubt this now, that or the variance is truly a beast, and frankly SNG Variance is soul crushing.
Also still in Zoom, I am a losing player, I suffer from some major leaks there which I hope to find and clear some day.

Anyway, good fortune was on my side in February as I binked first place in the Hotter 2.20, adding 1200$ to my account.

After running semi-good in tournaments and cash games last week, my BR is now hovering back around the 1500 mark.

Now, after this rather long introduction, thank you for reading so far if you did I present you with my goal for the month of March.

I will take my 150 BI's and play FR 10NL exclusively with the exception of Sundays where I will spend my rakeback T$ on some tourneys where I have a somewhat +EV feeling in (giving history).

As I have been crushing 10NL FR in the past, I expect to run at least at 5bb/100 over my target monthly sample of 180K hands and hope to attain closer to 10bb/100.

If I will make this target I will hit a 2.5K BR around day 25 (aka 25march) of my challenge and at this point I will probably cash out 500$ for living expenses and switch to 25NL with the remaining 80 BI's.

What can you expect in this thread?
- Daily updates of my sessions.
- Hands I marked for review.
- 10NL FR General population discussion
- The tools I use, The training sites I frequent
- The books I read
- how my progress makes me feel emotionally and how It affects my mental game.

If you have read this far, I'd like to say thanks and I like forward to your comments.

In conclusion
Goals for this thread:
- play a 180K volume at 10NL FR at pokerstars
- Daily updates on my progress, upswings, downswings
- Document mental games aspects of this challenge
- Document hands and spots I struggle with and have questions on

Financial Expectations:
- Grind up to 2.5K
- Have an 80 BI BR for the month of April for the same challenge at 25NL

Re-evaluations of goals and Expectations on April 1.

PS: I don't use the amapro handle on Pokerstars.

Played one session last night, for a bout 100 minutes, so that should be around 1500 hands.

I was playing B-game/C-game, was call folding too much, low on aggression, and I ended up break-even or slightly up (didn't check the DB).

Just like Dusty Schmidt I don't check my DB every every 5 minutes, I plan to go over the results every Saturday.

I feel like seeing my results on a volume which is lower than 10k hands is insufficient anyways and I won't play better because of it.

General population tends to fold too much, and tend to be nitty, some people don't now when to valuebet though, so that's a big bonus. Lots of spots where villains don't bet the river/turn with made hands.

Got back from the gym and will now start my warm-up.
I usually watch a DC-video and run over some tough spots I had, preferably with Slowlane123, one of the best FR coaches out there, alternatively blackrain is very solid as well, evidently, but I cancelled my dragthebar subscription some time ago. Might reopen it as they seem to have improved their website.

Another 2 hour session which went pretty good, apart from the usual coolers being there, I think I managed to grind up 2BI's, but since I'm not looking at the charts just yet, it's more of a guessing game now.

I'm 12-tabling and had 4 tables above the 20$ mark,3 tables hovering between 12 and 16 and a couple close to initial buy-in.

Gameplay seemed to be better than yesterday, would define it as close to my A-game, still some spots where I called rivers too light, and some spots where I bluffed off too light, but in todays' games you need to be doing this from time to time, so no regrets there.

Will try to put 5 most interesting hands up tonight or tomorrow morning, after all my sessions ended.

VPP count stands at 181, current VIP level = goldstar as I didn't try to make Platinumstar in February.
The hand goal I put forward to play in this challenge should get me up to Platinumstar though, especially when or if I also hit my side target of moving up to 25NL with 80 BI's.

While playing I listen to the mental game podcast.
I highly recommend this podcast to anyone looking to improve on tilt issues or is wondering how the pro's keep motivated.

Taking a break and planning to play two or three more hours.

The games aren't very soft tonight but beatable.
Playing close to A-game but cards not really running smooth today.
I figure In my last session I'm close to break-even and overall looking at a close to break-even day, which evidently is a far cry from the 5bb/100 expectation.

Will post some of the more interesting hands tonight as promised before.

Just had a funny situation where a shortstack opens, I 3b KK, guy on my left limps.
short stack 4Bets.
I call what short stack raised and guy on ly left pushes 100BB.
Short stack (around 50BB) calls and I am left with a decision.
Looking at all the stacks I figure I am probably beat by shorty but ahead of the 100BB pusher.

I call.
Short shows AA, 100BB guy shows QQ.
board is being run twice.
First board I win the sidepot, second board shows a Q.

:-) stuff happens

Last stretch of session for the day, think I'll play up to midnight and call it a day, been running somewhat better in the evening abusing more with turn and river raises on good boards.

VPP count up to 270, cleared the 5K hands mark.

Been playing basically Tilt-free all night and only played one hand where I consider myself to have blundered.

more past midnight

Had enough for now, ran quite good, but lost a 140BB pot with a set of deuces against AT on ATsXs board with the turn coming T, it was a three-way pot and I hesitated in calling off two all-ins, but folding to a 400BB pot size with bottom set, It's just to hard a laydown for me, so decided I should make the call.

Coolers will happen, I think I was up against AA with KK three times today as well, will crunch some numbers in a report now to see how many hours/hands I played, not interested in the money result for now, it will not have any positive effect on my motivation to see I am up 3BI or break-even today, will look at the chart after the 20K hands mark and will update every 20k hands.

Will share the 5 most remarkable hands of the day.

Day 1: Goal follow-up

Hands played: 4679
Hours played: 6.55
Rake payed: 32$
VPP count: 323.23
Rakeback: played 2 Subday storn sats, won one, so 11T$

Which means that: in order to play 185K hands projected, I need to up my volume with 1500 hands per day in order to make it, that, or I need to start playing some zoom, which can be an option towards the end of the challenge.

Best played hand of the day:

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has 4 4

Note: I call with my pocket pair from the BB, the odds are in my favour for this call.

fold, fold, fold, MP+1 raises to 2 BB, fold, fold, SB calls 1.5 BB, Hero calls 1 BB

Flop: (6 BB, 3 players) 4 J T

Note: Flop comes monotone hearts, but I hit my set, I know at this point that my hand is only semi-good, I have a few options here when the SB leads out, I could raise, which basically forces SB to have a better hand than mine to continue, so that's no good on this board, so I just make the call.

SB bets 4 BB, Hero calls 4 BB, MP+1 calls 4 BB

Turn: (18 BB, 3 players) K

Note: Turn comes another heart, this lowers my equity in the pot substantially, but I also now that if I hit the full, I will get payed off big time.

SB checks, Hero checks, MP+1 bets 3 BB, fold, Hero calls 3 BB

River: (24 BB, 2 players) K

Note: I bink the full, now, I believe if I want to extract maximum value from my opponent I need to check raise him and make him pay off either with a K or the flush. I could lead out with a 3/4th pot bet, but at most I will get a call and most likely I will get a fold.

I've set up a twitter account @amapro_
That took 45 minutes of my time though, so It cut in my playtime, first session of the day will be post-gym.

Reviewing hands now.

Hand review is done, made a video of it which I made upload to one point.
No idea where to upload it though, so suggestions are welcome.

Off to the gym now, played zero hands so far :-)

Thank you :-)

Didn't expect anyone to read through all of it :-) but just wanted to provide some background about my lifestyle.

First session ended, guessing to be down between one and two BI.

One of those sessions were nothing is easy, where your aces get raised on the flop and you just now they have a set and where you get coolered with a boat over boat.

Where you have to fight to take down every pot with floats and river raises because you're not flopping anything good, and when you do, villain comes over the top with a made hand.

Also my PC is laggy so, restarting it now.

Restared PC and looked into twitch, don't have time to go through all the setups now, but I will do so tomorrow morning before I start my sessions.

Looking forward to start streaming.

Played 8609 hands for the month.
Session going well, finally caught some good hands on good flops.
Up about 3BI

I became a bit cocky and spewy though, trying to forces people of hands, so I took a little break.

Back to it now.

Hands played: 9272
Rake: 54$
Total hours: 14.30
We are averaging 650 hands per hour which means I should play 9hours a day to reach the target.
As such playing 9 hours a day isn't really all that difficult, but with regular breaks and getting sufficient rest and time for gym etc it will take up about 14hours of my day.

Last session went a bit downhill, made some wrong river decisions which I hope not to repeat.

Called a river shove with KK on a 9AKT5 board and found myself up against QJ.
couldn't do much about that one except not slow playing the flop, but I was OOP and except not calling the river shove, but ... Many other combo's where possible as well.

Back from a walk, back to the grind, if all goes well, I should be able to grind 3 hours and another 2k hands, which should see my volume over 11K.

Really tired now and also running bad/not playing well.

So time to stop, regroup and back at it tomorrow, overall I think I had a losing day.

Some numbers:
Hands: 10.484
Hours:15.88
Rake: $60.84
VPP count: 463.11
Rakeback so far: 11T$
Vip stellar progress: need 2167 VPP's to unlock 40eur

Good night.

10.11am

Dropped off the mom-in-law at the busstation, had a walk and decided to get back to grinding.
Minor change: will play 4 tables of Zoom instead of 12 tables of regular play.
I need to pick up the volume a bit and hope to log a 8k day.

Didn't sleep well nor did I sleep much, went to bed around 1.30, fell asleep around 4.30 and woke up at 8.30am, no idea how it will affect my game and volume but hopes are good.

Hitting tables now.
