Re: $150 -> $2000 and beyond: In = Discipline, Progression. Out = Poor BRM, Tilt.
A real life, rather than poker related post today.
I have entered a 10km fun run (run = fun? ) in 6 weeks time from now.
http://www.runmelbourne.com.au/start.php?linkid=173
I'm 38 years old and still playing cricket. Gave up Australian Football a few years back after many years playing so that I could have one season where I have weekends with the family. Since the football stopped though, I have found it harder every winter to get motivated and do something that maintains a little fitness during the cricket off season. This year has been no different. Go to work, come home, eat-drink-play poker. Repeat.
So, as I was always a good long distance runner (when I was younger) I have decided to try something I've always wanted to do - enter a fun run. It's in 6 weeks and I will use the run as motivation to spend the next 6 weeks eating better, drinking less, sleeping more and obviously doing some training. Who knows, increased fitness might lead to better poker (or worse volume as I'll be exhausted ).
I'm 6' 3" and 99kg currently. Football playing weight was 90-92kg. Carry the weight pretty well due to my height. I'm certainly not fat and still look in reasonable shape but the upper body is starting to thicken up a bit and would love to strip down to at least 95kg and perhaps lower if things are going well.
So, 44 days to Run day. Off I go.

how do you find the time to fit 20-25 hours of poker, if you already work and have kids?? Sorry if this has already been answered

Do the poker study at work (read, watch vids etc) - just like now.
Ignore the family at home
I'll have to actually check PT3 tonight when I get home to see if I am getting that much in but usually play at least 2 hours each night after the kids go to bed and then have some nice long sessions over Fri-Sun. Important to get family time in though so poker usually comes in the morning or evening when the kids are in bed or perhaps on a lazy Saturday/Sunday afternoon.
Trying to go from 2 tabling to 4 tabling at the moment though so hopefully will cut the length of the sessions down and be a little fresher when I do play. I also need to make some time for a little more exercise now too.

Re: $150 -> $2000 and beyond: In = Discipline, Progression. Out = Poor BRM, Tilt.
Was crushing these short little PokerRoom lunch time sessions for a while but it's been break even at best for the past few weeks.
Doesn't help of course when you lose a stack and a half in 2 hands like I have just now.
23 in BB...board A495....all in on turn v 59. Turn 5.
QT raise pre SB v BB (half stack)....all in on T6x flop v Q6. Turn 6, River 6.
Thanks for coming.

Rivering quads is a bit of an over-kill slap in the face as well!

Thanks mate. Looking forward to it - kind of.
Haven't really thought of a time goal as I have no base to compare against. I always crushed the cross countrys in high school and was always leading the pack in football training running drills. I've always been a good runner but never really measured times.
As I train I might get a feel for what I'd like to achieve. One of my cricket team mates is a personal trainer and is in the process of doing me up a program which I expect to be quite brutal and and I doubt I'll be able to quite achieve in terms of also meeting family commitments (just got a new puppy today) and also squeezing in the poker.

Re: $150 -> $2000 and beyond: In = Discipline, Progression. Out = Poor BRM, Tilt.
A bit of a nothing week for me poker wise. Had a bit on with the family, which included a new puppy and a few sleepless nights, which meant I didn't play as much as I would have liked and was pretty tired when I did play so struggled to give the game the attention it deserves. On the positive side, I am still playing with tilt well under control which makes it a lot easier to enjoy the game, regardless of how any session is going in isolation. Also posted a pretty minor profit for the week but nothing that will buy me a Ferrari any time soon.
4961 hands at 2.53 ptBB/100 or 5.06 bb/100.

Run/Fitness
Have eaten really well, drank plenty of water and consumed no alcohol since I entered this fun run. It's a lot harder than you think to not just grab a snack and munch away, especially sitting at the PC having a game. Hit the road for the first run this morning too. Managed a very easily paced run. Covered 4.8km in 28.44 minutes. Pulled up quite well although the legs were and are quite heavy. Was wondering WTF I have got myself in for after about 10 minutes but I'm determined to stick at it and see the results in 6 weeks.
Will post some poker goals for June in my next post. Will definitely be looking to leave 5NL behind and move into 10NL and hopefully beyond.

JUNE GOALS
Going to keep these pretty modest. I think ticking off small goals is better for my mindset and ability to move forward than worrying about the end goal and getting impatient. I'll obviously be hoping to make a profit but won't aim for a minimum BB/100, rather just look to play as well as I can and assess how I am going.
So, I have moved to 10NL today and with that in mind here's what I'm aiming for:-
- Try to get at least 20,000 hands played (no Zoom).
- Taking a 4 BI shot at 10NL. Hopefully remain at 10NL+ but will drop back to 5NL if I drop 4BI.
- Maintain tilt control.
- Read Verneer's "Building A Bankroll" again.
- Continue fitness training and good eating/sleeping/drinking habits in preparation for July 15 Fun Run. Drop from 99kg to 95kg.

Re: $150 -> $2000 and beyond: In = Discipline, Progression. Out = Poor BRM, Tilt.
Is this an easy call - guy is batting only 35 BBs deep and shoves. 3b% = 5% over a small sample. Do we flip for 35BB or wait for a better spot?
PokerStars - $0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3
BTN: $3.50
SB: $28.87
BB: $11.30
UTG: $12.14
Hero (MP): $10.15
CO: $6.36
SB posts SB $0.05, BB posts BB $0.10
Pre Flop: ($0.15) Hero has A Q
fold, Hero raises to $0.30, fold, BTN raises to $3.50 and is all-in

Personally I probably fold AQ but I am a nit. Just think he's not going to have worse very often and we'll be flipping (where we are a small underdog) against 77-JJ often and AK is a very big part of his range.
AK I would snap call because I think he also does this with AQ which we crush.
Someone else can stove a 5% range if they want because I cba lol. If it's a small sample it's kinda irrelevant anyway.

Yeah, I'm a nit too and while I am aiming to loosen up, I'm not making a lot of progress on that yet.
I stoved AQs v AA-55, AK, AQ, AJ, KQ type range and was about 46%. Not sure if that range is exactly right (AA-KK probably 3b smaller for value).
