Hey guys! My name is Greg and I play as HokieGreg HU on Pokerstars. I play husng's at the 200-1100 levels (game select 2.2-5.5k games). I have been playing for a living for the past 3 years and have enjoyed pretty solid results so far. Much of my husng career is chronicled on my former blog (started blog at the 22s). I also make videos for HUSNG.com. You can read more about me in this interview I did for anskypoker:
http://www.anskypoker.com/2009/12/an...a-hu-sng-guru/. While I'm happy with what I've accomplished, I think I'm capable of getting a lot more out of myself. I am looking to push myself to do big things in 2011, namely Supernova Elite.
2010 has been quite a grind. I put myself under the world's largest microscope this year and analyzed my strengths and weaknesses as a poker player. I
believe that while playing an individual hand or session of poker is about competing against your opponents, playing poker over the very long term is much more about competing with yourelf. I've realized that as I progressed as a poker player, I inevitably hit plateaus where I stop improving and I have to take an honest look at what I'm doing and figure out what I need to change. I love poker because, to get the most out of yourself, you have to learn to be self-aware, disciplined, and honest about how you are approaching the game and life in general. I feel I've hit another of those plateaus recently, and I'm hoping that this thread will help to motivate me and hold me accountable for my goals in 2011 and beyond.
I had the worst variance of my career in 2010. I bought Holdem Manager in March and since then I've run 160ish avg buyins below ev over 4200 games. I didn't have HEM before this stretch, so it's hard to say how good or bad I ran at times before this. I know there were times where I ran epic hot, but the bad times in poker are much tougher than the good time are fun
. After feeling sorry for myself for a bit when I was about 50-60 buyins below EV, I decided to man up and look at it as an opportunity to improve myself as a poker player. When this stretch began, I was only playing 400-500 games a month. I realized that I was thinking about poker too much in terms of weeks/months and not enough in terms of games played. I decided to work hard on increasing my volume over the rest of the year to help the variance even itself out quicker. Unfortunately, things have only gotten worse in terms of variance since then, but I've continued to work hard and I've learned so much about myself having faced this kind of adversity. I can play longer sessions now, more games per month, I'm playing much higher buyin levels, I'm staked/coached at 500+ by one of the best husng players in the world (H2olga on FT), strategy has improved, etc etc etc. Long story short, if I could be given the 40-50k in EV back right now at the cost of all the lessons I've learned from this, I wouldn't take it. This stretch of games is the best thing that's ever happened to me in poker.
My main goal for 2011 is to reach SuperNova Elite. My plan for this thread is to help motivate me toward that goal, and also to possibly encourage some of you to put yourselves under the same microscope and learn to accomplish things that always seemed like a dream.
This thread will mainly consist of standard daily updates where I post results/VPP totals/interesting hands/rants. I will eventually post the occasional free strategy video. I really encourage you guys to ask any strategy questions you have...I'll do my best to answer all of them!!!
