Pre-WCOOP Update:
It's been a while since the last update and I have quite a few things coming up I want to share.
- So I did get married in late June! Life feels very similar as before, in fact almost nothing has changed except calling my girl wife every now and then. Feels weird though calling myself a married man, I always pictured myself getting married more at like 36.
- I took a month off leading up to the wedding grinding a lot of Hearthstone. Been playing with a few poker pros, we have kind of a team chat going on with the four of us. It's been really fun times. I was grinding Hearthstone all month to try to make a late qualification push for their national championship and world championship. I fell short by a point despite grinding really hard. Ironically I missed a point because I started a month later in the grind. You get 3 months to qualify and basically a point for each month but I started a month late.
- I've been getting back into poker this month. My coaches have been really hard on me, a lot of it my own fault, but even when I take time off and come back they're just always there to help me out and listen. Really warms my heart. I would like nothing more than to just make them a lot of money because at this point they've put in way more hours than they're worth and haven't seen much return.
- Been streaming quite a bit on Twitch:
https://www.twitch.tv/goyugiohpro. It keeps my table count down and I like rewatching the footage later to review the session. I still make a lot of mistakes in each game but I do feel I'm getting better at poker overall day by day. Spent a lot of time this month with coaches going over a bunch of different spots that I think I play better. I'm getting a consistent viewership each day so I figured it might be time to start plugging the stream. It's very enjoyable for me to chat with fellow poker players and we do a lot of free coaching sessions and BOOM hand reviews.
- Month overall was quite bad. I've been very guilty of having a bad mental game in the past. Life has just been very stressful since the end of 2014 with the bad news about my wife's health, my family constantly needing bailouts, and not being too successful at poker. I've been taking it a bit rough but I plan on making some life changes in the future and am really excited for it all.
August Results and Year to Date:
Rough month. Finish distributions were pretty solid, going 2/1/2/4/1 in a few smaller field games. Unfortunately in bigger tournaments I got 6th in the Microgaming major, 7th in the Hot 215, 9th in the 215 BB, 5th in an 82 Hyper, 10th in the 90 Sunday Challenge, 10th in the Big 55, 10th in the Hot 22. Normally I would sweat this stuff but I saw a post on 2+2 that I want to share with you guys that might even have just changed my life totally.
1. Lipofund's Goals Thread and perhaps a Realization
Marty has a great goals thread I follow:
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...&postcount=174
In this post he shows his results at high stakes this year, stuck 76k over 112 games at $500 Buyins while just printing money at the smaller games (up over 6 figures). It was pretty staggering to me to see someone up 6 figures with such a smooth graph at 0-90 and on his way to being stuck 6 figures in the big games. So I ran a filter for myself as well and I don't want to just post it publicly but basically:
0-90 for me is 76% of my profits with a very smooth graph. No visible downswings
91+ is 24% of my profits and I'm currently in a 160k downswing at these games which explains why things have been rough for me lately.
So up to this point I've just been a total mental game fish. In fairness to me I am under a lot of financial pressure due to trying to be a good son to an Asian family and a lot of my blues have been tied to the mindfk of whether or not I'm still a winning regular. I feel like Marty's post and me digging deeper has just unleashed a wave of tranquility for me. Looking at my 0-90 graph, it doesn't seem possible to be a losing player at those games at this point. People who grind 0-90 well will just be printing money until the landscape changes even more.
So I had it right in 2012 and 2013. I always thought 15 tabling 30 ABI was much better than 8 tabling 100 ABI unless you were an elite apex predator regular. But in 2014+ I started getting a lot of coaching and pushing for the HSMTT life, thinking it would just be a higher hourly and all that. It could theoretically but the swings and stuff are just much harder to deal with.
I said this on stream but I have a lot of respect for the guys who have been high stakes regs for a long time and don't let the six figure swings faze them. One of my good poker friends right now is stuck in an obnoxious downer but he's been crushing for a long time. Maybe it bothers him on the inside but he never really lets that seep into our conversations and always grinds with a pure heart.
Anyways I know my weaknesses and my limitations. I'm going to give WCOOP one last go and then after that I'm moving down to my bread and butter, permanently. I'm going to try to be one of the best midstakes grinders and just be really selective with the high stakes games I do play. Here's hoping for a brighter future.
2. Staking Project + Twitch
Me and i need sheet, an elite HSMTT Korean-Canadian player are starting a low to midstakes stable. We'll be launching a 2+2 thread soon and taking a look at all suitable applicants. I'm a bit concerned the market is a bit saturated with too many groups but I think we have a lot to offer as well in addition to some of the best stables like BBZ and BitB. Going to be focusing on midstakes value and game selection so it's a bit of a different niche from the higher stakes groups.
And I'll be streaming on the regular. I enjoy it quite a bit and love the different personalities in the chat. We'll see where it goes.
3. Game Selection Guide
This will be delayed until after WCOOP because the fields just change so drastically during WCOOP. But after WCOOP I'm going to be real serious about playing the best games. Some of my good poker friends are very big on the game selection and value hunting thing and they are absolutely printing as well. I was always above average to elite at picking the best games but haven't been as sharp lately. After WCOOP I'm going to start running ability scores for all the midstakes games I regularly play and then write out a guide for the stable and for others on the best games to play each day. Maybe it will be an e-book nice and cute style. If the rest of the year goes well I'll probably put the book out for free.
