BR Update (started @500): 675.26$

Other site(s) cash game BR (started @ 300): 440.13$

Had a really good happy day. Went for a really long walk this morning and did a little meditation at one of my favourite places in the whole world. Here's a few pics of the walk:

https://gyazo.com/abe5ff82d85b02e2bfedeac5c535a6d8
https://gyazo.com/ded1a36466b413cf9b4901f3d55fda9a
https://gyazo.com/120d3cb9a3ce4feb425dad55ae507fdc

Went to Subway for lunch and struck up a conversation with the guy working there (pretty sure he is a part owner as well). He was talking about the terrorist stuff in Syria today and how lucky we are to live in Canada, and how our problems are nothing compared to theirs...**** we don't even really have problems. He loaded up my sub on the house, and then gave me a drink and whatever else I wanted for free as well. I love seeing when people give random acts of kindness when it is totally not necessary and they seek nothing in return. Ended up giving him like a 5$ tip on a 6$ order to return the favour.

Note operators of poker sites: Notice how the business owner treated me with respect and went out of his way to treat me well? I will surely return as a customer to that Subway in the future and will also spread positive word of mouth with the story. Actually, the only bad part of this day was coming home to the news that the site is making significant rake changes that will effect my bottom line significantly. I have no choice but to start voting with my feet and looking into other competitors

Went to a pretty sweet golf simulator and played 18 holes with a friend. Then came home for a few nightly tourneys and got 2nd in the 33 win the button That leaves me here at 4 AM jacked up on caffeine and writing in this thread...GL me falling asleep tonight!

Golf simulator tomorrow morning then heading up north to Muskoka for the weekend. Gonna sharpen my axe and get some fresh northern air. Hopefully will be back in good shape to fire on Sunday but if I take the weekend off and enjoy I'm cool with that too. Plan to sling nice volume next week regardless.

GL @ the tables this weekend hombres!

Sigh, I wish I could come in here and speak of my great progress through the week and feel really great about it. Unfortunately, this thread is about holding myself accountable for my failures just as much as my successes. This week was probably my least productive in 2017 and is absolutely unacceptable going forward.

I feel like a standard live reg degen. Make some significant progress grinding it out in the low stakes during the week, and then punting it all back in the high stakes and pit games on the weekends. (Metaphorically speaking of course, seldom do I reg a game that I don't think I'm +EV). In other words, towards the end of the week I've been relapsing to some of my old habits fairly often, and dumping back my weekly progress.

Twas a pretty good weekend up north though, I can't lie. I just really need to focus on eating better/sleeping better/choosing better/living better. Let's get into the update and weekly rant. Whine over.

Book Review: You guessed it. If I can't come in here and write a good thorough book review for either "Zero to One" or "A Drunkard's Walk" I will give someone 100$ to buy themselves a few books. So please someone call me out next week if I don't write a review of a book.

Story of Leaving Comfort Zone: RIP self improvement. JK, this week was pretty rip though in terms of leaving my comfort zone. Again, if I don't come in here with a good story next week someone please call me out, for a cool 100$.

Hands:

super tilting hand, close-ish to ITM in the SM. this has something I've been trying to stray from a little bit, and being a little unbalanced towards value. just because the population just seems to hate folding any pair when draws miss. in a way i know its nice that i can get paid with the heap of value combos i can have here. his call seems pretty ambitious and idk if i can even tell him nice call, even though it might have been. probably works better as a bluff here to check flop or bet smaller on 3 streets. for some reason i felt its a good spot to set up a turn pot-ish jam because i can put so much pressure on this exact type of hand and middle pair/other draws etc.

https://www.boomplayer.com/23442291_F3792F6DA8
vs a fish, i guess either check, check, check or bet, bet, bet right?

Random Rant of the Week:

Spring time...the time of year where people's happiness seems to have a nice perk, where animals come out from hibernation, the weather becomes enjoyable, and stereotypically...the time of year where I lose motivation for poker. For the first time in years I've been optimistic about my favourite hockey team (TML) and they are going to the playoffs! They will probably get dusted by Ovie and the Capitals first round but this is the first time the team has made significant improvements to their organizational structure.

I kind of had a depressing thought this week. Do you ever feel like there is this refrigerator hum in your head? Like some noise or voice in your head that just seems to be on repeat and you don't really know why? I feel like I'm not the only one who has this and it's become this voice reminding me of all the **** that I've put on the backburner for so long. Moreover, my health, my well-being, and my relationships. I guess part of the "hum" is just from built up habits of getting in my own head so much.

This is what kind of got me thinking...how many of us silence this "hum" by trying to distract ourselves with various activities? Some examples of stuff that I've done is: watch sports, watching t.v., play poker, eating junk food, socializing, listening to music, drinking alcohol, etc... what I've found is that stuff mitigates the noise of that hum temporarily. As soon as the hockey game is done, or the buzz wears off, or the t.v series is done...there it is again, but louder. The longer I put off doing what I know is at my deepest importance, it gets louder...and louder....and louder.

Primary goal this week: focus on the stuff that is at my deepest importance and ensure it get's done every day, before doing any leisure activity. Follow diet restrictions, 4 workouts, read a book, grind 4 sessions, reach out to 4 friends with a phone call. Seems easy right? Talk is cheap.

I think working on my health and relationships is imperative to my happiness and needs to be the primary concern.

They say solitary confinement is one of the worst punishments in the whole world? So why is it so easy to get trapped in the pestilential prison of our own minds anyways

GL this week my brothers, work hard and enjoy this process!

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

2 Things matter in being financially successful in a career of poker or investment...

1) Your long term ROI. It may seem quite obvious, but you need to be playing in games/making investments into vehicles that have a net positive ROI in the long run. If you do not do this you will almost always fail. Profitable decisions compound in the long run and will yield profitable results. Seems obvious right? Try sharkscoping a bunch of regs and check their results in high stakes turbos/hypers/progs.

2) Having a bankroll or float big enough to sustain the variance to a high percentage confidence interval. You might be the best player in a field but if you do not have enough roll to sustain the variance you will also go busto pretty quick.

I'm all jacked up on caffeine and couldn't think of anything to post about during my walk so I thought I'll rant about poker for a little bit. This stuff might seem kind of obvious and I presume most of you know about it already. I want to give back to a few of the readers that maybe could benefit from a little strat.

Why opening ranges are crucial and the most important aspect of poker (just a couple thoughts):
Simply put, it is very difficult to show a profit if you are constantly entering pots with a weaker range than your opponents. Unless you are astronomically better than your opponents post flop/pre flop you will be fighting an uphill battle if you are playing too many hands. One of the biggest leaks I find in MTT players is that they play too many hands (in general). When you open too wide opponents can massacre you by jamming wide because you can't defend your opening range profitably, 3 betting wide (because you are forced to play a weaker range than them or forfeit your opened chips), etc etc.

Another aspect of playing too many hands would be in the Big Blind. Back in the day people would be super tight from the BB and fold sooo much vs. min-raises. Nowadays, everybody and his dog is defending super wide from the BB. The latter is much more efficient than the former imo, but I think it is easy to over-do it. If we defend too wide vs EP opens we will be often playing against a range where we have very bad reverse implied odds and we will under realize our equity (even though it seems like we're printing pre flop). For example if you defend K5o vs a UTG open you will face a range that is very K10+66+heavy. Even if we flop a pair we will either get barreled off too much or value owned.

In other words, it's vital to pay attention to pre flop ranges. These are the foundation upon which our pre and post flop ranges are formed. Be aware of how your range will perform vs your opponents range, and the types of flops you will hit+ be aware of their tendencies post flop. Will you ever over realize or under realize your equity?

When developing opening ranges I believe that balance is fairly important. We want to have a range that isn't too loose that it's heavily exploitable or too tight that it is heavily exploitable. In general, with deeper stacks, a range with good post flop playability and board coverage is important. When shorter stacked, high cards are much more important.

Let's talk about opening from a 15 BB stack in EP. I think we should include some strong hands in this range that make it expensive for our opponents to punish us. For example yeah, we might have KQo as a raise/fold, but we will also have AA KK QQ JJ AK etc. So it's important to not have too many bluffs here (so we don't get exploited), and have enough value hands that allow us to bluff too. My default is something like suited broadways+KQo+99+, and i might open jam AQ and 77/88 or so.

Obviously, all of this stuff becomes a whole new ball park if there is other factors such as weak or strong villains/ICM/different stack sizes/outlier villain stats etc etc

Anyways, I was going to post more here and get more in depth and do a really good thorough job...but I realized that will take too long and way too much brain power at this hour

Grinded hard this week and will be off until either Saturday or Sunday. Booked some golf lessons starting tomorrow and watching my Leafs in the hunt for the Stanley Cup

Book Review: "Zero to One" by Peter Thiel. Overall, great book with some great points that challenge standard paradigms in today's world. Would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to start a business or curious about innovation.

Peter Thiel is one of the co-founders of PayPal and an expert in start-up companies. Actually want to know something crazy about PayPal, or better known as "The PayPal Mafia"?
-Here is a list of the start-ups that Peter's co-workers founded or helped each other invest in:
-Elon Musk (SpaceX/Tesla)
-Reid Hoffman (Co-founder Linked-in)
-Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim (Co-founders of YouTube)
-Jeremy Stoppelman (founded Yelp)

If you think about the fact that each of the above companies is worth over 1B$ it musn't just be a sick coincidence right?

Here's a few good takeaway points I got from the book:
Contrary to popular belief, competition is actually a bad thing. In all economics 101 classes they preach about equilibrium markets etc etc. However, the opposite is true. In business, you do not want competitors. For some reason people believe that competition is an indicator of value. Airline industries average something around 30 cents per passenger (while many lose), whereas, Google has far higher profit margins and is in a market of it's own. No other company even comes close to Google in that industry.
-The goal should be having a monopoly on an industry. The price you charge is dictated by you, and not the market. To reach a monopoly you must not be a disruptor. You must find a niche market and grow from that into similar markets. The idea? To start small and crush the niche market before expanding. If you are trying to take a piece of the pie from larger corporations you will get smothered and constantly be fighting an uphill battle.
-The author talks about hiring people for a company. If an employee wants salary instead of equity in the company they may be biased for short term results, and not focusing on the long term growth of the company.
-A grand-master salesperson is someone that you don't even realize they are selling you something.
-I'll talk a little more about some of the more important points below. I didn't make any notes or anything as I read so my review kinda sucks. I also suck at summarizing a book with so many good informational points. Better read it for yourself

Story of Leaving Comfort Zone: This isn't really something that happened over once instance this week it's really something I've been trying to implement and become stronger in the last 6 months or so. Moreover, just being more concerned about my own path in life and not getting deluded or jealous about what other people around me are doing. For instance, there was a time in my life where I might get jealous of my friends for having success in areas that I wasn't (which was probably rooted from some of my insecurities at the time). I've been working to be truly happy for people close to me having success and resonate with that positive energy. In other instances, I've just been trying to focus on doing my own thing and not worry about other people. For example, just doing what makes me happy and what I need to be doing. Making less time for people in my life that don't treat me with respect or we aren't a positive influence on each other.

I love value betting with a polarized sizing with a wide range on these types of runouts. Villains hero call so much cuz they think v-bet range is so thin yet we have so many bluffs

Random Rant of the Week:

Let's kick if off with a little quote: "Winning is better than losing, but everybody loses when the war isn't one worth fighting."This really drove me down a rabbit hole of thought. There are just so many battles in life and poker that just aren't worth fighting. A good example of this in poker would be the Hot 215 field. Basically, an influx of regs fighting for a tiny long term ROI. Everybody gets ****ed by variance (some in a painstaking type of way, and other in an orgasmic kind of way) The bottom line is that EV is small and variance is enormous.

I guess in the book the author talks about going from "Zero to One" as opposed to going from "One to Two". The former relates to creating something from nothing. Finding a totally new area or niche and capitalizing on it. Whereas, the latter refers to building on an idea someone has already done, and improving on it. As I've been doing a lot of thinking about my exit strategy from poker I've been looking into new avenues of revenue generation. Ever realize that most of us (including myself) have just went from 1 to 2 in poker. The idea of a professional poker player was long ago pioneered by many players (depends who you view as the pioneers), we're just here refining our strategies and building upon what others have taught us. This pie that we compete for gets smaller and smaller everyday. Whether it be due to increasing competition, country restrictions, greedy sites getting greedier, etc etc. The bottom line: the net amount of money the population is winning from poker is only getting smaller and smaller.

The Bright Side: When you think about all of the stuff we have learned in poker it often comes from a simple foundation handed down to us from other players. (Things like open somewhere between 1-3x, never open limp, c-bet small on dry boards, c-bet big on wet boards etc) We could possibly go from 0-1 in a sense of trying out new things that haven't been tried. Perhaps, developing a strategy that incorporates open limps, uses a 4x open sizing, employs a 2x over bet strategy on river that is completely balanced etc etc. Of course the game is super refined already, but it is not solved yet, and there is always room for improvement. Not to mention, I can only imagine the population's response to an unorthodox strategy would be completely disastrous. Not saying to actually do this stuff, but might be some good food for thought

Here's a rough action plan for what I have planned for the next few months:
-Possible Alberta trip for ~3 weeks maybe as soon as this week
-SCOOP for ~3 weeks. Will either play this in Alberta or find a SCOOP house somewhere around here.
-Keep improving diet and workouts. Start working harder to burn fat.
-Possibly Vegas for WSOP
-Start spending more time in the dating lab.
-Keep working on myself and enjoying life. Let the rest take care of itself.

I apologize that this post probably lacks coherence as I had to write very quickly and I'm quite tired. Best of luck this week guys, not sure yet if I'll be at the tables!

" For some reason people believe that competition is an indicator of value "

Isn't that from the consumers perspective though? A business itself would much prefer a monopoly and no competition because they can do whatever they want and charge whatever they want, In an industry with high competition and many participants everyone has to fight for more consumers via lowering their profit margins etc. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant. Very confused if some business minds think having competition is good for their bottom line :P

Also what calls for trip to AB? I've lived here my whole life it's a pretty nice province if you've never been! Hope you enjoy it!

Yeah I actually wasn't quite clear about that my bad ahha. It's a fairly moot point but I guess what I was trying to say is a lot of new business owners focus on entering a very crowded market and making marginal improvements to a product (thinking they are different or superior). For example in most cities there are heaps of restaurants all fighting for a similar target market while offering a similar product. This is obviously great for the consumer because it allows various selections and businesses are forced to stay competitive with their pricing and quality. However, thousands of restaurants fail every year because they fail to escape their competition.

I suck at explaining this type of stuff though and it's far more clear in the book. I just wanted to write some notes as a receipt that I actually read the book

Yeah it's weird I've been to a bunch of countries in Europe, Australia, all over the US etc but I've never been further West in Canada than say Windsor, Ontario and never further East than Quebec. Just a friend is gonna have me over there to show me around a bit and we're gonna do like a poker/fitness bootcamp for a month. He's actually posted somewhere in here I believe (T.Jessop) Should be a good time!

I think so many of us poker players are in similar boats. Partly, because poker attracts a similar demographic of people and partly, because it's easy to lose control of balance playing poker haha.

Know the feeling when you ate way too much food? Perhaps, you ended up eating a whole cake or a whole box of pizza? Well the good news: I didn't actually do this and my diet has been on point all week. The bad news: I did something similar.

Yesterday morning I went for my golf lesson @ the driving range and when I got home I immediately felt like grinding (started around noon). Anyways, took a lot of bad beats all day and ran like aids, got grossed out in ~15th from big 109 and ~15th in BB 33. Was pretty annoyed as I felt like I was playing well but not able to close.

Fast forward to 1 A.M.: I was something like 1/220 in the Big 27 and my package was losing for the day. Ended up chopping it and getting the package into a profit. I'm very happy that I could stay focused for a whole ~16 hour session and very happy I could get some $ for investors and myself.

On the contrary, a 16 hour session is completely ridiculous and threw me off balance today. The pizza analogy? Well it sort of feels like I over-indulged with poker and neglected life yesterday.

Anyways, I think I've earned a nice day off today (even though half the day has already passed because I didn't wake up til noon). Pretty good day ahead: taking my friend out for his b-day dinner, watching my Leafs play game 4 (they lead 2-1 in best of 7 series), gonna hit the driving range, and might even have a few beers

Have a great rest of the week guys leggoooo!

P.S.: Since getting golf lessons and hitting the driving range regularly my golf game has improved 10 fold!

thanks! hmm tough question for sure there are 3 books I would highly recommend.

1. "The 4 Hour Work Week" by Tim Ferriss.
-Great simple book that actually instilled ~2-3 very big paradigm shifts in me and changed my outlook on a few topics.

2. "The Way of the Superior Man" by David Deida.
-Highly recommend this book to any young guy who is confused about anything in life. A lot of us lacked strong male role models in life or perhaps they taught us the wrong things and ideas. Although this book is quite dry it provides a very solid foundation for how to be the best man you can be.

3. "The Solution to Social Anxiety" by Aziz Gazipura.
-This book definitely won't be for everyone and don't bother checking it out if you don't think you struggle with any type of anxiety etc. This book helped me clarify/identify certain toxic thoughts/thought patterns that were quite crippling in my everyday life.

4. "The Game" by Neil Strauss
-Quite corny and cheesy at times but this book was quite motivating for me in terms of getting back into the groove of the dating scene (after dating a girl for ~3-4 years). Personally, I really enjoyed reading this book and it's a great story as well+I got a tonne of good information from it!

Those are probably the 4 most influential books on me in the past year or so. I'd highly recommend checking out any of them if they seem appealing!Wish I could give some fiction book recommendations but those just don't interest me as much as movies take much less effort to watch than reading books

Enjoy!

Excuse me while I get a little whine out of the way here, I encourage you not to read this section:

Ran super good for a few hours stretch today and played pretty well. Ended up getting 2nd in the BB 33, sucked hu cuz guy had like a 10:1 chip adv. over me.

At the same time I built up a chip leading stack in the BB 55, this hand happened with 10 left:
https://www.boomplayer.com/23572199_24A997471A

then this happened on FT:
https://www.boomplayer.com/23572295_5733FA839D

Could have been so close to a 5 figs. profit day. Still ended up +~4k so really can't complain. Was so tilted after that and went for a walk to calm down. That awkward moment when I remind myself that I play a game I love for a living and this garbage didn't happen to me when I was on FT of 2 tourneys with 6 figs up top. Also reminded myself that these dolts literally setting $ on fire all day eventually those $ come to me in the long run. Hence, it should be welcomed that they make ****brained plays like this.

WHINE OVER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted to make a post in here before bed regarding some stuff I've discovered in the last ~year or so, for two reasons:

1) There comes a lot of points where I want to give in. I want to write in here to part cement the idea for myself that this is the path I need to take and I need to endure this ****.

2) Possibly a few guys reading (or one of the several sexy women reading this thread) will have things not going the best for them atm, but I want them to know that if they stay true to themselves there is a bright future ahead.

Here is my main idea: The path to a great life will be difficult as **** (for most of us)...but it is so necessary.

Here is why I think the path needs to be difficult:

Let's look at this from a statistical perspective: so many things follow the normal distribution in the world. A great portion of the masses fall into the category of average, and less amounts fall into the extremes. Simply put: if you follow the same path as the masses and do the same stuff as the masses, you will likely fall within the constraints of the masses. Perpetual mediocrity. This can be everything from fitness to poker to life decisions to dating to wealth etc etc.

So somewhat often I question a lot of the choices I've been making from day to day. It would be so easy to just go out and get innebriated af 3 nights per week, or revert back to old eating habits, let toxic people get the best of me, or start hitting up ex-gf(s). The main issue is that if you keep doing the same **** you've always done, you will get the same results you've always had.

I can't lie it's difficult eating clean, or doing intense workouts, or getting out of my comfort zone in the dating scene. All the nights going out and getting rejected/slapped in the face, I know, will be well worth it. (Have had a lot of great experiences and nights out as well but will keep the tone negative for the sake of the post )

The reason why a lot of relationships fail is because guys don't work on themselves enough imo. You can make a lot of excuses for why relationships fail (and you will hear them a tonne: she was a slut, she cheated, she was a *****, she's crazy etc etc) The bottom line is: if you aren't getting the relationship you want: it is probably your fault.

To make a quick point of it...if you aren't confident, driven, experienced, happy on your own...you won't get that from another person. If you have weaknesses as a man that will become amplified in a relationship.
For example: if you lack self confidence and self worth you will let your gf/friends walk all over you because you have a deep rooted fear of not being able to find a substitute...aka scarcity. When you operate in scarcity you are ****ed! Your partner will have all of the negotiating power and lose respect for you etc etc

I'm pretty tired atm so a lot of that is probably a massive ramble but hopefully it makes some sense. This leads me to my point that being on your own and following your own path is completely necessary (for at least some time). It can be/will be/is difficult at times but just know if we keep working on ourselves and staying true to our values variance will hopefully be kind to us in the long run

rant over ty for reading and sweet dreams d00ds
