Sick work ethinc, really glad it worked out for ya! Definitely takes a lot of self control to grind out of a live downswing.

Thank you, that means a lot! I'm very grateful it worked out, it definitely could have not worked out.

Quick Vegas Summary:

So I came to Vegas very hopeful and excited for a productive June. I arrive and within 5 minutes am doused in sweat. It's 107 degrees and I'm already feeling a burn. (Funny enough, I don't think it ever dropped below 100 degrees during the day while I was there). I take a taxi (big mistake) from the airport the my air bnb condo, 1.5 miles away. $45 dollars later, I get there. Room is small but everything I need. I quickly unpack, buy a ton of snacks/food at the convenience store 40 ft away. Time for some poker.

I ended up playing my first session at 1/3 for a little warmup at Bellagio where I see Phil Laak entering Bobbys room along with Kutzenov who's already in there. I definitely get a few poker chills.

First week goes well, I'm up a little over 2k and feel very good about my game. My friend has come up for vacation, head to his resort, meet 3 girls from Oregon had a very fun time with them, clubbed, and got to see Zedd up close. Bought drinks for one of the girls (2 for $50...almost puked)

I quickly realize I only brought about 12 buyins to the 2/5 games since they all play so deep. Go on a downswing and I start to get a little worried but feel good about my edge against the 2/5 population.

Watch the Cavs win the title in game 7 in Wynn poker room. Have a good session, leave the Wynn and run into the Cavs...talk to a few of them and wish them congrats (they went to xs to celebrate)

After being very breakeven and only up 3k for the trip. I go full degen and play 5/10 uncapped at Wynn. Buyin for $2,500 with no plans to rebuy.

3rd hand in... UTG opens to $30, Super aggro beautiful young asian pro calls in MP, I peel A A and pop it to $150. UTG calls. MP reraises to $700. Hero calls.

Flop: ($1,550): K K 2

Hero check, Villain bets $500, Hero Calls.

Turn ($2,550): 7

check, check,

River: 4

Check, CHeck

MHIG against two Queens.

^I don't remember ever playing a hand that got the blood pumping as much as that one.

I end up playing some 5/10 with Cate Hall and Jessica Dawley.

Friend came up and we partied during EDC. I ended up upswing hard the last 10 days.

Cliffs:

Took aggressive Bankroll shots
Mostly played poker
Partied two weekends
Didn't get jumped or mugged

July Goals:
1.) Study 15 hours
2.) 60k Hands

Life goal also accomplished: Moving into my own apartment in September with one of my best friends

Dang that is a sick trip. Can't believe you ran into the Cavs right after the game lol. Who is the young asian pro? Not Maria Ho right?

Yeah it was crazy, LeBron is HUGE. I still don't know her, it wasn't Ho. But apparently she was a regular in the 5/10 and 10/20 games and was the biggest stack when I played playing about 15k.

------------

On poker front, been dabbling with bit of the higher stakes 400/500 NL just cause with all the great players in Vegas...why not! Volume has been pretty bad but I've been basically 4-6 tabling. I tried 8 tabling and a month off definitely takes my focus off.

Up about 2k for the month which is nice. Headed to Parx tomorrow for Big Stax 200 and then 2/5 cash if I bust.

Also, I'm moving out of my house and moving to Hoboken/Jersey City hopefully by September.

Life Goal accomplished.

Now for some hands...

1.) Pre can go both ways. Had someone say river jam is a bit thin...Probs bottom of my value range but think it's standard.

Mid July Graph:

Results have been great, volume has been piss poor. Have run great at the higher staked games.

up 1k on other sites, probably about 12k total hands, I think for two reasons.

1.) Lack of games, been difficult for me to get consistently more than 6 games going with the summer months and I believe the ME.

2.) Have been having chronic back pain last few months, haven't gone to the gym, feeling lethargic and less energy. Not fun.

Really need to have a big month so I can have some extra cushion when I start having big expenses starting in September.

Hands:

1.) Pre I misclicked making it 5x, think that's why villain flats AKo (he almost always 4 bets this combo). Don't hate his bluff on the river.

Fwiw I thought you could be super wide in hand 1 so I think I have a relatively wide 4b range despite the fact im not often 4 betting too light in cash. Don't think it's worst shove just unfortunate to run into it.

Feel like players tend to be weighted too much toward value in these spots. That 4d is also a very deceptive blank as villain will have a couple of suited combos of 45s and A4s that he's barreling the flop with.

Preflop might be a 4b/f though OOP. KQo is very tough to play here just because of spots like these.

I would agree. 4b makes the hand a bit easier to play, and good point on the blank I didn't even think of those combos.

On vacation now, finished up the month on a downswing online, but was able to play a session on way to vacation. +$2,300 over 6 hours at 2/5.

Ended up a shade under 4k for the month which im very happy considering the lack of volume.

----
August will be my last month home with my parents and I want to make as much money as possible before moving out in september. So i'm gonna change up my routine to hopefully increase my volume.

I also hired a new coach that i'll have about 5 sessions with in August. Was a pretty penny, but excited and want to continue to take my game to higher and higher levels.

On another note, will be playing the 300 and 500 tournies at Parx and I'm selling 50% of my action at a small MU. If anyone has interest pm me and i'll give you the details.

July ended up another winning month despite poor volume (no losing months since Feb!), which WILL change for August.

Had my first coaching session with new coach who has his own PGC here and certified crusher...looking to improve quickly through that.

Will be playing Parx series, few bullets of 300 and 500. Sold close to half so hoping to play my best and have some run good for the investors. Will be playing the first flight on Wednesday.

August Goals

1,) Play 80k hands

2,) Study 20 hours

3,) Plug 2 leaks

4,) Start working out again 4x a week

Have a very good feeling about this month, very excited to start grinding

Put in about 7k hands first two days with a few hours going over some spots...still in a rut results wise.

On the way to Parx for the 300, should late reg at start of level 3 for plenty, plenty of play still left. If there was ever a time for a big score (that I could share with my investors)

Will update here and twitter - Jpaw23- regularly through the day

At 31.2k after level 6. Have 3 spew monsters at table along w 3 capable players. Peaked at 55k after bluff catching spew monster and then dipped down t 35 k after calling 2 streets with 88 on 44995 board against maniac. Folded to his shove and he showed a 9.

39.5k at dinner break was cruising along playing about 65k and then got involved in a few pots with a player to my direct left who is giving me some problems, he's played very well overall and he has a ton of chips and our table is one of the last to break so could be some fireworks.

Been taking every marginal spot so my stacks been swingy but headed to 600/1200 and more importantly having a lot of fun playing, will be back in an hour to start level 10

Unfortunately, I never got his name he mostly kept to himself. He was about my age, young african american who kinda looked like a young Phil Ivey.

After I busted, I played 2/5 cash at a table with him for about an hour and I was impressed with his play.

Parx 300

Bullet #1

So I headed down Wednesday morning, excited to get a day off from getting wrecked at 200 and have a little tournament fun.

I get to Parx at about 1:10ish and get seated at level 3. First hand I see, blinds were 100/200. CO opens to 1500, both SB and BB call. Flop Axx rainbow. CO bets 5k and only BB calls. Turn is another brick, and this time CO bets 1k, BB calls. River is another Brick and CO throws another 1k chip out and BB calls. CO shows KK and BB shows A3o.

Ok, I think I have a good table....

I get quite card dead, one weak passive player sits down and limps in MP at 150/300. I iso 65 to 950 and the limper calls.

Flop: Q J 10

Check, Check

Turn: 6

Check, Check

River: 6

Limper leads 2k and I raise to 9k and get paid.

Got to 40k and then had an extremely long time being card dead and dropped to 32k.

Got 6 limpers to my BB at 200/400 and I raise to 3k with KQo. Spewy Lag who limped UTG calls and the rest fold.

Flop:Qx 4x 3x

I bet 4k and get snap called.

Turn: 9x

I check and Lag snap bets 9k. I call

River: 7x

Not my favorite card, Lag bets 5k and I snap, MHIG against 5's and I'm back up to 58k.

More card deadness, although I maintain chip count through a few squeezes and a hand where I C/R 76dd on 10 3 4d flop against good reg which gets through.

Eventually lose about 20k bluffcatching pocket 8's on a 4499x board against spewy guy to my right. He overbet jams and I decide to fold and he shows 9x.

Get more card dead, fall to 30 k, and defend A8ss against MP open and 2 LP flats at 250/500, BB (who looks like a young ivey and played well) calls.

Flop: AJ8ddd

Checks around to Spewy guy on button who bets 2500, I call, and BB raises to 10k.

Tough spot but I think he has just about every flush possible and just totally outweighs his bluff combos Kxd/Q10dx kind of hands.

I fold.

Then did not get another favorable hand til I was down to 20k at 600/1200.

I defend 76o against Ivey and 2 other flats and open jam 975rb board, Ivey has 75s and I do not catch up and lose the first hand.

My thoughts on first bullet, was quite happy with my play as I was mostly able to chip up through Non SD as I was really not making any hands/picking up much. Only made a few mistakes, unlike my second bullet where TBH I think I made a few cringe worthy ones that ended up costing me a bag.

BULLET #2

I get another favorable table, and unlike my first bullet I make some hands and extract value.

Climb up to 50k, when solid reg calls my big iso over two limps (mistakenly said 3bet in twitter), I triple with AA on Q77610 board and he jams over me, I fold, and he later tells me has Kings. I tell him I was bluffing but now I feel like an idiot.

Finally get a big breakthrough when I flat UTG ship for 13k at 400/800 with AA, and button reships with QQ. I hold and suddenly am playing about 100k and the table chip lead.

I then had my best play as I got max value against recs with some unorthodox lines to get to 130k.

Then the seat to my left was taken by Joe Reddick, a really fantastic tournament player. Regardless, I still am opening quite wide at this point since the blinds are both recs who are not defending nearly wide enough, I don't get much resistance from Reddick since he just bought in and is kind of in push fold territory.

Of course, he quickly doubles up and gets to about 80k and now I need to start tightening up. Very quickly either me or him are opening every hand at the table...eventually he gets quite unlucky a few times and is eliminated but he was a nice guy for sure and we had some friendly banter.

Unfortunately I was sitting at 150k at beginning of level 12, an hour later I was busto.

I had 3 hands I want to highlight where I made mistakes that cost me a bag.

Hand 1:

I'm in the BB at 1k/2k, 3 limps and then button shoves 27k and I peel A10ss. I figure I'm ahead of a normal jamming button jamming range, especially since I'm viewing the limpers as almost always dead money here. However, it had just folded to villain in the CO and he folded 55's (by accident) with 13 bigs and had tightened up considerably the last two hours.

I end up calling and losing to AQs.

Hand 2:

1k/2k still. Last hand before my table breaks. I open 4400 with AQo UTG and very nice, tight, rec woman calls UTG+1 with 48k behind.

I end up c/c her small flop bet of 4k on KJ3dd board. Turn is another J. Check Check. River is 9d.

I end up betting 12k into about 18k.

This is a huge mistake and makes it way too easy for her to bluffcatch with Kx. Any kind of overbet most likely gets the job done as she never has flushes or Jx here.

She calls and shows AKo

Hand #3:

The worst of them all, and I'm stilll kicking myself today for it. Down to 90k at 1200/2400 at new table. Sb opens to 6k, I repop to 16k, and then SB jams 74k.

I leveled myself and called...my one massive mistake for sure and it cost me he rolled over JJ and I could not improve.

I was eliminated 4 hands later getting J6o against A6o and QJo...honestly might have been dead before the flop.

I then summed up the trip by losing -$1,300 in 3 hours at 2/5. I lost one big one by misplaying it terribly and then got sucked out in a 1k pot.

Had coaching today and just need to continue to work hard through this downswing of sorts (almost 4k or 20% of the roll)

Still feeling good about my game and the improvements that will come

I enjoy both, and they both have their pro's and cons, but for me I definitely enjoy playing live more, especially the whole social aspect.

I think, right now as a player, I'd be more profitable playing strictly live.

However, I've improved my game immensely faster through online and the convenience is a big +.

Had to be Ray Ross, we're friendly at this point and he seems like a cool guy. Goes into super punt mode at the end of day 1s if he doesn't have a lot of chips lol

So I've got a few thoughts about your last post.

1st hand: sweet run out

2nd hand: 7x seems like one of the better river cards you can hope to see imo.

A8 hand: I'm just not folding this to Ray. It's potentially a good fold given the information you had at the time, but knowing ray he is just going to have a ton of hands that have the Kd in them that you beat. AxKd, KdQx, KdJx, KdTx all seem very very possible (he 3b's AxKd pre sometimes but should be peeling sometimes as well). It's certainly a disciplined fold and you very well may be correct but in game I don't think I'm finding a fold. I probably should go deeper on this hand to find what I think is truly correct by looking at total combos of everything but maybe we do that sometime later on Skype.

In the AA vs KK hand his shove on the river seems terrible since I'm 99% sure it was for value so if you felt like he was value shoving then fold has to be right. Really really unfortunate that he made a bad value bet with probably the only worse hand he's value betting.

Joe Reddick story: The night before day 2 of the $2700 main at Borgata I'm talking to Joe McKeehen who is looking at Twitter and is reminded of some blog he read or heard about a while ago in which Joe Reddick calls the seat to his right the "electric chair." I thought that was one of the funniest things I've ever heard especially given how soft spoken Joe Reddick is. Fast forward to late in day 2. The seat on my left opens up and the table behind me begins to break. Most people have already moved and my buddy Jon Borenstein walks over to my table. We needle each other a lot so he's standing there with his rack of chips and I tell him I think he's bluffing and he doesn't actually have this seat. He says, "yep, you're right, but..." Joe Reddick walks over "Joe Black does! Have fun buddy!" I almost pissed myself laughing at the fact that less than 24 hours after learning about the electric chair, I found myself seated in it. Sounds like you did alright in the electric chair as well (well, until after the executioner left I guess ).

ATss hand: Think I'm folding here. This is something you will get used to the more you play live tournaments. The spots that are close online, especially when dealing with all ins, are often closer to folds live. This is not true with every villain but in general I've noticed people just really do not like putting all of their chips in light live compared to online. When I first started playing live MTTs I was definitely stacking off here but the more I play them the more I realize you are almost NEVER ahead here and only flip with like 77-99, some of which might even limp as well depending on villain.

Bust hand: Villain had JJ. Was this blind vs blind? Also what did you have?

In any case, as sucky as it feels to bust MTTs after putting all the time into them, I think the experience is worth something to people who play well but don't have a lot of live MTT volume under their belts. It's why I continue playing live even though I think the immediate profitability of playing a multi day live $500 MTT is less than just playing online each night. Good luck if you fire any more bullets! I'll be there for the $550.

It actually wasn't Ray Ross, but I'd say they play similiar styles. With the A8s, and correct me if I'm wrong, was that I'd find a better spot at this table and not be put in what I felt like a marginal situation.

I think it's actually an interesting hand overall, when I just call the button, I think my hand is very underrepped, BUT I don't really want to shove my 40 k over his 10k raise as I'm toast IMO against his calling range (although I do fold out a lot his high equity hands)

If I call, I feel like he will often bet with his value hands, and check back his semibluffs and be able to realize his equity, so if I was playing I'm not sure how I'd go about it. I definitely could have been outplayed here though.

That's a great story! Yeah, and quite ironic since he seemed like a really nice guy and was bantering between both me and the player to his right, and I was definitely surprised at how soft spoken he was.

For the ATss hand I totally agree with you, I think ranges are a little bit tighter than they would be online.

For the bust out hand it was blind vs blind and I had AJss. Definitely a fold against the rec and I still have plenty to regrind if I fold.

I will be at the $550 next week, not sure which day yet, but I'll see you there!
