Sup peeps.

Yesterday I fired up a couple of tables at the start of my grind and one of the big multipliers popped off with two marked fish. After running quite poorly for the first few months I've now had a burst of three in a very short period of time, two at the higher stakes and one at the lower stakes.

Unfortunately I'm now 0/3. Made a 7.5ish bb BvB call with A5o and ran into A7o, which given how fast he jammed coupled with the circumstance was probably marginal, and then tank-jammed 6bb BvB with 53s into cl fish after checking to see blinds were about to rise. Got beaten into the pot by 85s.....not that I'm to know they snap off with that there. Either way it was super depressing to just get it in bad twice against two weak players.

Whilst I'm managing little cashouts here and there my financial situation is still heading in the wrong direction and we're getting quite close to the bone now, so missing out on the chance of significant money for the third time in a short period of time really ****ing hurt. It also came right at the start of a long day of grinding so posed a brand new challenge to the last two big multi losses, which both came after the days work was already close to complete.

Now, previous weaker incarnations of me would've allowed this disappointment and setback to completely derail productivity. I went away and did my keyboard session to cool down (had a great session actually!) then came back to grind but realised my focus was dog****. I was still hurting. So I went away again, ate some good healthy dinner whilst listening to motivational youtube vids then came back and settled in for a very tidy session.

Spoiler:

Cev was amazing plus I ran redhot in allins so profited for around 30BI on the day.

It would've been so easy to just quit and go and mope around feeling depressed, and there's no doubting previous versions of me would've done just that. I don't want to be that weak sort of person anymore. I want to become a person who I can respect and admire. Becoming a person worthy of self-respect is about how you respond to the difficult times. That's where character and mental-fortitude is truly built. Viewing the day as an opportunity to move a little closer to becoming that person is what gave me the drive to rage and battle against the pain. In the end I only lost about an hour of grinding to the heartache.

I've still got about 9hrs of grinding over the weekend to hit my goal for the week. Got a lot of stuff going on today so I doubt I'll get much volume but will be hitting it hard tomorrow because I'm quite high up on some leaderboards so there's an added incentive to grind. Every other goal is within reach too.

I'll drop in either tomorrow night or on Monday morning to review the week.

Ty for reading, Shelly.

Good to see you're not giving up after a setback! My hot streak ended too (I'll post a graph when I hit my 1K spins which should be within a week orso) so I know how easily it is to just leave the room and not come back. Try to focus more on the cEV , it's what I do and it does help. Of course easier said than done when the money in my BR isn't really needed for the time being. Hope you bink a big one soon!

I feel you in regards to not wanting to give up even if it hurts.

I've made a prop bet for 3k games on stars in June which averages on like 9ish hour days for me. I know it's going to be hard but I feel completely it and fighting through the pain will make me a much stronger person.

Really rooting for you man!

Cheers Matthew. When I started on this stake I ran atrocious which culminated in a mini-meltdown. TBH the meltdown stemmed as much from a lack of confidence in my ability and my process for improvement than it did from the actual runbad.
The mini-meltdown was kind of useful because it forced me to self-assess and from that point my focus has mostly switched to cev, which is the only place it should be in spins.
I've also shored up my ranges and put tonnes of hours in off the tables so it really helps when you're better able to judge if you're playing well or not.

Monday 15th May to Sunday 21st May - Review

Poker

[F] 42hrs+ total grind + RiD

Failed my hourly goal again, just. Managed 39hrs exact (2340mins) of grind + 9hrs 37mins (577) of off table work.

[X] RiD all poker activity (Grind, Study, Coaching, Notetaking, HUD work, etc)

Overall pleased with the effort this week. Disappointed in not closing out the hourly grind goal. I'm finding weekends a struggle as I like to go and see family and whatnot so I suppose it's not the end of the world to fail for that reason, but moving forwards I guess I'll start aiming to have things almost totally wrapped up before Sunday arrives.

Off table work was great this week and I did a ****load of plugging in ICMizer which can only be a good thing!

Mental

[X] 10mins meditation every day + RiD

Great week on this front. Really enjoying my meditation sessions and I'm finding my ability to keep my mind full of what it's supposed to be full of is increasing. Even when there's noises from the street or dogs barking or w/e it's not throwing me off too much so I guess that's a clue that the process is working.

Nutrition

[X] RiD all food consumed and estimate carbs

[X] <200g Total Carbs (TC) on 6/7 days

Solid week on the nutrition front. I ****ed up on Tuesday by getting a footlong from Subway after squash and realising I'd gone over 200 as a result (roughly 120g in a turkey footlong) so had to be way more careful over the weekend than I was planning, but managed to keep it below 200g on every other day whilst eating very healthily.

Fitness

[X] workout on at least 5/7 days + RiD (Squash, Weights, Running)

Played 4 squash matches and did a circuit workout with my weights on one of the days. Making great progress on the squash court and loving the feeling of feeling my body getting stronger whilst simultaneously seeing my technical ability skyrocket. The key is to ensure I don't slip into a period of inactivity again and undo a lot of that progress!

Creativity

[X] 30mins+ learning keyboard on 5/7 days + RiD

Solid progress this week. Did the 5/7 sessions. Was really struggling with the basic version of Für Elise that I'm learning. It was a big push to break through some of the plateaus but I've now completed all the separate steps and arrived at the end of the song. I'll be working on playing a clean version of the whole thing this week and there's no doubt I'll achieve that.

-----

Graph

-----

Pleased with the week. There's still a lot of room for improvement and optimisation but the progress I'm making in all areas is clear.

Volume isn't amazing as I'm playing low table count and focusing a lot of time and energy into off-table improvement but cev was kind of stunning this week which, whilst clearly higher than I should expect on avg, still feels like some sort of vindication of the work I'm putting in.

I'll drop in either later on tonight or early tomorrow with some more goals and plans for the coming week.

Also I owe Matthew on the freeroll so drop me a PM with your stars name mate.

Thankyou for reading, Shelly.

Sad to say I've just had a really poor week. I'm not entirely sure why my productivity/good-habits fell off a cliff but it's embarrassing to say the least. It's also so ****ing frustrating because I'm regularly hitting new heights and yet my discipline is still so fragile I keep sinking to familiar lows.

Consistency is crucial if you wana get anywhere because you build up a heap of momentum and get up to a great cruising speed but if you allow yourself to stop, it's not like you can just get back to that speed from a standing-start. You've got to go through all the rigmarole of building up to that point again.

One thing that definitely didn't help last week was procrastinating on setting new goals. As ******ed as it sounds, by not having a bunch of goals nagging away in the back of my mind it almost created a loophole in my brain where I wasn't actually failing. In reality it was just yet another period of my life that can only be viewed as wasted. It really is shocking.

Something else I've noticed is that I find it way harder to work over the weekends than I do during the week. Moving forwards I'll try to ensure that poker goals are mostly secured before the weekend comes. As someone who is very introverted and doesn't really have friends it's kind of crucial that I see family as often as possible, so when everyone is at my mum and dad's house on a Sunday afternoon it's kind of aids and hard for me to be sat in my study with a huge grind ahead.

I'll drop in on Thursday with a review of May. $3 freeroll on each of the five goal categories.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Sometimes time off to do something else is exactly what your mind needs. I've an expert procrastinator but now I learned I'm actually hypersensitive so at times I get too many impulses to absorb and process and I need to separate myself from everyone and everything to come back to calmness.

This week I'll take fitness, it's so crucial (mens sana in corpore sano and such). I've noticed I've been slacking in my running trainings too and really want to pick up the pace again (literally and figuratively speaking).

Cheers mate.

I agree that it's crucial to separate yourself from the modern trappings every now and again though that's definitely not what I did last week. Last week was just pure excess and self-immolation.

Meditation is really important for getting a break from the silliness of modern life, especially when the time isn't there to get out in nature and reconnect with your simpler, primal self. I suppose when I can afford some relaxation time I'll start going for walks in nature and that sort of thing but if I'm not consistent with hard-work now then I won't ever reach the point where I can afford to relax. It's a big mistake I made when I last played poker for a living, I was never out of pressure financially and a large reason was the periods of inactivity.

Booked! Cheers for the continued encouragement Colin, and ye I've basically developed a contact list of players who I can have a good match with, maybe it wouldn't be a terrible idea to stop and have a beer every now and again and actually get to know them.

-----

Managed to work/grind myself back into some decent form over the last few days. The week is going well although Monday was a bit slack so I basically have four days of fairly solid grinding ahead. Planning on going really hard over the next three and then just play it by eye on Sunday based on how many hours I still need/leaderboard positions.

May Review

Overall had a fairly solid month. I think setting short-term goals of a week or less really suits me at this point in time so I'll continue that system for now, with a view to eventually feeling confident enough to set monthly goals again in the near future.

The only major letdown of May was the last week where productivity took a nosedive. If I can start finding a way to stop these episodes from happening then I'll really be going places.

-----

Nutrition

As with last month I ate super-clean for the most part. Going through my diary I had 18 days where I recorded less than 200g Total Carbs.

Unfortunately I spent the bad week binging on takeaways and junk food. Looking to cut that **** out because it feels like it takes a very short amount of time to completely undo a longer period of discipline.

Fitness

Exercised on 21 days. Very pleased with that, it could've been even better but it's still a solid effort.

15 squash matches

1 solo squash practise

2 runs (2.6ml)

3 dumbbell circuit workouts

Creativity

Did 17 keyboard learning sessions, which probably translates as >9hrs.

Solid effort and feel like I improved a fair amount and broke through some technical plateaus.

Mental

Meditated for 10mins on 21 days. Looking to improve consistency this month, and maybe start slowly adding time to the sessions.

-----

Poker

Overall it wasn't a terrible month. Scummed myself by missing a week of grinding but that's in the past now. I have to be pleased with the way I've cemented my position in the higher stakes games, I definitely belong here!

April graphs

Lower Stakes

Higher Stakes

Combined

-----

As mentioned already I won't be setting official overall goals for June but hitting 3k games at the higher stakes is the min I should be aiming for. I'm 3-tabling now, feeling fairly comfortable and churning somewhere between 22-25 games an hour.

I'll drop in on Sunday/Monday and review the current week.

There's still freerolls available on Poker, Mental and Nutriton.

Also, I spent 131hrs exactly grinding (7860) and 32hrs 2mins of off-table work (1922) for a total of 163hrs 2mins (9782).

Hit a bit of a milestone yesterday.

Spoiler:

First 200+ game day!

Unfortunately cev has gone to ****. I've upped to 3-tables and churning out biggest volume but I'm confident and comfortable in what I'm doing, so I'm 99% certain it's pure variance.

Mindset is in a place now where, as long as the multi isn't huuuuge then I'm genuinely happy just to get chips in good, anything else is a bonus. It's tough when you're constantly getting coolered by bad players but it's a very common aspect of short-stack poker. Runs like this are beyond standard.

I'll probably drop by on Monday to review the week. Things are going well but the next three days are massive.

Poker

[X] 40hrs+ total grind + RiD

[X] RiD all poker activity (Grind, Study, Coaching, Notetaking, HUD work, etc)

Worked extremely hard both on and off the tables this week.

Total Grind - 40hrs 30mins (2430) - Total Off-Table Work - 8hrs 29mins (509)

Mental

[X] 10mins meditation every day + RiD

Meditation was decent this week. I think on almost every day I practised around the middle of the day which is way more useful than doing it towards the end imo. Going to start gradually increasing the session lengths.

Nutrition

[X] RiD all food consumed and estimate carbs

[X] <200g Total Carbs (TC) on 6/7 days

Had a really solid week of eating. Last Monday was the only day where I ate like **** (642g carbs ) but every other day was super-clean and I feel way better for it. It's amazing what a difference eating well does for self-esteem. When I binge on junk I feel ****ing gross, when I'm eating healthy organic vegetables, clean protein, nuts, seeds, lots of healthy fats etc etc it serves as a cornerstone to everything else that's good in life.

Fitness

[X] workout on at least 4/7 days + RiD (Squash, Weights, Running)

Went for a 2.6ml run, then had a squash solo practise as preparation for two squash matches over the weekend.

Creativity

[X] 30mins+ learning keyboard on 4/7 days + RiD

Had this goal completed by Friday with a view to surpassing the goal over the weekend but never got round to it. Either way made some more solid progress, determined to keep chipping away because I've gone from a complete beginner to being able to actually play songs in < 6 months so I'm excited to see what another 6 months of consistency might produce.

-----

Higher Stakes Graph

-----

After the disaster of a previous week and a poor first day of the current week I have to say I'm bloody proud of the work I put in.

Volume was the best it's ever been. There was also a tiny amount of games from lower stakes that aren't in that graph.

Unfortunately I ran complete aids for the most part and lost a huge amount of money pre-rb. I'm happy to have a clean slate and, hopefully, start running somewhere a bit closer to decent.

I'm not going to lie the two big grinds over the weekend were extremely tough, especially towards the end of the sessions. I also think I might've been auto-piloting a little bit and maybe there was some very subtle tilt in there, not monkey-tilt but when you're constantly getting annihilated by negative-variance and you start slipping into a victim mindset then you waste energy and focus and it clearly affects the quality of your play.

Overall though this has been a really positive week and I'm looking forward to producing more like it. If I can produce some level of consistency then there's no doubt in my mind good things will come, both financially and in wider life.

I'll drop by later on today, probably in about 8hrs, to set some new goals for this week. More freerolls so keep an eye out.

Plan for this week is to take it a tad easier wrt poker and stepup other areas slightly.

I've basically taken today off from grinding and Saturday will be disrupted because my builder brother is starting work on my back yard and I'm labouring for him.

However, I'd really like to have all my goals wrapped up by Sunday because I'm a big Andy Murray fan and it looks like he's finding a bit of a form at Roland Garros. Either way, if he doesn't make it to the final it'd be nice to be able to mostly chill on Sunday and maybe watch the match.

I'm planning on going extremely hard the following week, will most likely be looking to surpass the grind total from last week so it's kind of important I push hard over the next four days and allow myself time to relax and recover over the weekend.
